Knockout is really just part of the long line of queer coded villains (sissy villain trope) that appear after the Hays code prohibited the portrayals of queerness. I highly doubt its intentional for him to be written as queer, but there is a long history of associating queerness with villains in media that could’ve subconsciously affected how the writers approach a flamboyant, theatrical, deceptive and self-centered character. Starscream since his own conception is an exaple to the queer coded villain trope and even starscream in tfp.

Here's how I think of it: Knock Out wanted to mourn Breakdown, but considering that he was with the Decepticons at the time and literally was given Silas, the killer of his partner, on a metaphorical platinum platter, he used the excuse of dissecting Silas as a way to grieve without letting Megatron notice.

I think the honestly most loaded part of all of this is that Knockout is, without a doubt, the most entertaining character in the show. Partly just because Prime kinda has an issue with a lot of the cast being pretty bland and/or stereotypical in less compelling ways, but also because he's just genuinely charismatic with a lot of character animation and fun Dynamics, the same reason Starscream is so memorable in prime.

If I recall correctly, within the aligned continuity lore, cybertonians don’t have genders in the same way humans do. So if we are talking strictly lorewise, calling a bot gay or straight would be using the human lens. This doesn’t mean they would find said distinctions meaningless, but perhaps we can question how we apply our own limited labels to an alien species with more nuances. That’s also not to say Knockout can’t be read as gay, not to deny the impact he has had on the community, which I very much enjoy. Also 12:38 “I see him as more of a stepping stone to stronger harder gays” - Paperplane

In most continuities it's hard to really call their relationships straight/gay e.t.c. We, that was a pretty thorough video, great work! And yeah, it ain't uncommon for a fandom to exaggerate that kind of stuff in headcanons and such, to the point of 'forgetting' what's in the actual source material tho. a lot of characters get labeled gay by some fandoms only bc of vibes, despite the source material, and Knockout is a fine example of that. But hey, at the end of the day, it's all in good fun, if ppl have fun with their headcanons and don't cause trouble towards others, really, it's all good, even if he isn't actually gay in canon. Also damn that fanart at the end is adorable, props to the artist!

I think why he doesn't bother folks much is 1. He's entertaining regardless of how you see him, and 2. He isn't as shallow as he himself lets on. He's vain and smug but he's a doctor, and not a very good combatant at all, but not a coward either. he's got some dimensions to him beyond any stereotypes because he's a character first, and comedic relief second. he's perfectly competent, just vain and easily flustered if someone scuffs him. Often his failures have nothing to do with his own competence, its usually just an outside influence or getting into a situation he lacks the skills to navigate

I loved this vid!! I will say that there is a lot of subtle character animation with Knockout that you might miss if you aren't looking closely! When (spoilers) the decepticons learn that Breakdown is dead. There are several instances where Knockout doesn't say anything, but you can see he's angry or sad in the background with his body language!! The raw vitriol when he sees Silas piloting breakdown is present in the scenes between them and the scene where he gets permission to take him apart is one of Knockout's most vicious in my opinion. Regardless, I loved this and I loved seeing your break down (haha funny) of his character. 💕💕

Absolutely great analysis on Knock Out! It was actually seeing ship art of him back in 2016 that actually got me into the TF fandom! I totally agree in that KO is a perfect case of "unintentional gay rep", but I think it's amazing that how despite this, most of the fandom has taken to viewing him as an icon for the LGBTQ+ community. Consider all the other LGBTQ characters we got in the IDW comics as a result like Ratchet, Drift, Arcee and Anode. And of course Nightshade too. 11:22 My headcanon was that Knockout only had a crush on Starscream. Why else would he get embarrassed by footage of him flirtatiously suggesting Starscream to make him second in command, in that clip show episode that Starscream danced. Going off topic, but I think because Knockout’s super queerness, that just proves my point as to why Nightshade shouldn’t even be criticized to be non binary. Yeah, Nightshade’s non binary. But that’s not even Nightshade’s trait, as Nightshade’s personality is that they’re the intelligence expert. The inventor.

You know, Knockout’s flamboyant personality and constant wanting to look good reminds me of a character from another show I like. The color Red is another similarity between the two. (For those who don’t know who I’m talking about, it’s James the Red Engine from Thomas and Friends). Both are also really fun characters. Only difference is one’s a more protagonistic red locomotive, the other is an antagonistic red Decepticon Car who switches sides in Predecons Rising.

Enjoyed this video, nice work. When I got into the fandom way back I really loved that most people assumed or decided KO was gay. For me, I'm ace, always have been, so when I watch shows I default see every character (unless they have a partner or it's actually states/obvious) as kinda ace themselves, or just blank slates... if that makes sense?. So seeing all the gay fan content was fun, and made me go 'oh yeah, I can see him as gay, I like it'. (And thus now I ship loads of characters). But I like that we as viewers can see characters in our own preference.

Just because he takes immaculate care of his appearance doesn't mean he's gay -- he's Metroplexual. 😉 Seriously, though, he's my favourite new character from "Prime," and I love that he's become such a hit with the non-psychotic fans. Admittedly, I haven't been able to get all the old-run IDW comics, but from what I've seen in the trade paperbacks I have, they handled his relationship with "Velocitron Breakdown" rather sweetly.
@PlayerZeroStartКүн бұрын
In my (very straight so probably invalid) opinion, I think Knockout not caring about Breakdown's death could be down to the simple fact that he's a damn psychopath (or sociopath, I can never remember which). Hell, even in a straight reading, I think that's the implication there. He probably doesn't feel any *real* connection so any relationship he had with Breakdown, platonic or otherwise, meant nothing to him beyond his own pleasure. Hell, the end of the series directly shows us he has no loyalty to his fellow Decepticons and hopped ship the second they started losing. There's also the possibility that their relationship wasn't romantic at all, and they were simply fuck buddies or something.
@dragon_os51532 күн бұрын
I like to think that Knockout saw Breakdown as a bit more than a friend but not full blown lovers, while Breakdown was just oblivious and saw everything as purely platonic.

As a KOBD shipper, this is a very level-headed video, and I appreciate that. It is true, from how the characters are in the show, there is no super strong, "correct" side to be on and you brought up a lot of good points for both. I honestly see any take as valid, but as an older someone who watched the show as it was airing, I think that the writers pulled some weird contradictory moves in the later episodes to purposefully muddy the waters. But it's fine. In the end, it's just a show and people will or won't ship what they want. That said, they make a crazy cute couple and I, for one, am addicted to the tragedy of Knock Out losing Breakdown.

It’s no surprise one of the most popular shows in the fandom’s certified “new character” became so popular. Yes, I know Knockout was a toy-only character in the late 80’s or early 90’s, but Prime was the first time a character with that name was actually important, something that can’t be said for any other prominent named character in the first 3 seasons.

I always thought of him as "gay-coded" rather than a "gay" character, perse. There's ZERO romance or interpersonal relationships in Prime beyond just good friendships, hence assigning sexual orientations to the characters (when discussing canon) seems rather pointless. Prime's not like IDW or Beast Wars (or even Animated), iterations of the franchise in which romantic relationships between the characters do exist and hence the discussion of sexual orientation in canon seems more adequate. Yet still, attributing "the qualities of a gay person" inadvertently accepts the idea of that being gay comes with obligatory quirks and attitudes that reinforce the "validation" of a stereotype. BUT, some might consider those quirky attributes as a shared part of the identity and, overall, something appropriated by the comunity. Its a very complicated issue.

the idea of 'dont ask don't tell' on the nemesis is depressing AND hilarious. If the decepticons had a somewhat balanced gender ratio (putting aside the mindfuck question of 'why does this robot have a gender') then sure. I guess. Being straight is what LORD MEGATRON expects of you and if you aren't then just don't mention it ever. But since the amount of fem Decepticons can be counted on two hands most times then like... What are they supposed to do. The war has been going in since Forfuckingever. Does LORD MEGATRON expect his entire armada to be celibate and romanceless. You just can't fuck if you're a decepticon unless you somehow get the scarce few women that exist to want you. what a cruel and sad existance

Watching TFP for the first time as a grown ass woman, this was mainly one of the things I had on my mind a lot. When I was asking for recommendations from friends I asked which Transformers is the gayest and Prime was the most common answer, but also nobody told me about Knock Out at that point? I do feel he is queer-coded but just that, only coded. I don't know how intentional it was, I feel like it's possible some of the staff were thinking it but not everyone was on the same page (just a gut feeling though). You do mention the time period thing a lot and that is definitely one of the main reasons why. I was still pretty young when TFP was airing and while it wasn't something I watched, it was the same time I was getting into fandom spaces online. I always refer to it as the "Pre-Steven Universe era", where a lot of shows tried to sprinkle in hints or there were just ships people on staff were clearly biased for. Nobody ever had any intent or faith they would be able to actually go all the way, so we just all had to settle with our crumbs. But still, watching TFP for the first time as an adult with shipping brain turned on, I saw Bulkhead and Wheeljack as a way more explicit couple than Knockout/Breakdown. Arcee calls Wheeljack his boyfriend and Bulkhead straight up says "I love you, Jackie" at one point. They can't fool me.
@jennifertennent83192 күн бұрын
How funny this should be recommended to me. I have been thinking about a lot of these same points. I do like the idea of Knockout and Breakdown as a couple in Transformers Prime, but there simply isn't enough evidence to make this plausibly true (at least in my opinion). I like the idea of Knockout being impulsive or otherwise not backing down from a confrontation, getting in over his head and Breakdown stepping in to de-escalate with his intimidating presence, start punching, or convincing Knockout to walk away--it's not worth it. Something else worth mentioning... I believe it's during the movie finale when Knockout and the Autobots are looking down on a restored Cybertron from the Nemesis, Knockout remarks, "Such luster." Maybe he just likes shiny and pretty things in general? Maybe as a doctor / medic it's normal for him to make observations about a Cybertronian's features? However you choose to interpret him, he is a fun character with some very quotable dialogue. I am particularly fond of the episode where he gets some payback mopping the floor with Arcee and Bumblebee with the aide of that sound blaster. I am willing to concede the writers and producers didn't think about the implications of Megatron having a "don't ask, don't tell" policy... My knee jerk thought is. Megatron simply doesn't want relationship drama to impact the Decepticon cause or loyalty to him. Megatron doesn't care who or what you find attractive, you can do what you want as long as you keep it on the down low and it doesn't cause any problems.

On a more serious note, I constantly find Knock Out's confidence and flexibility inspiring. The only thing he's actually afraid of is overwhelming odds. He backtalks and teases Starscream even though Starscream is technically in charge or higher in rank, he wolfwhistles and even fights Optimus Prime, and he can slink into any role that he's either given or will put him in better graces with those who could destroy him. He's such an interesting addition to the Decepticons in TFP and I can't help but to love every moment he's on screen. Is he bad rep? That's not for me to decide, but I do hope that those who can decide know that he's absolutely a beloved character and the powers behind TF have acknowledged that.
