This video is really helpful! I'm starting a game this friday and Intrigue was the aspect that bugged me the most but now, I feel confident! Thanks again!

Quite wonderful and insightful. I'd watched a 90 minutes intro the game and an enthusiastic review of the game. But the bottom line from both was the House and the Intrigue. That's where the players went and got involved in.

I love the idea of intrigue mechanics. To the people who want it to be a single die roll, I ask you, "Would you want combat in dnd to be a single die roll?"

i find it amazing that even the videos that talk about a system i do not know of nor have i ever heard of can be interesting when it comes from the chanel of this "gentleman in question" =)

I think his way of opposing you will be in trying to persuade you to stop, essentially.

I will do a full review at some point. I'll probably finish the game I'm running first.

Not as detailed an explanation as I hoped for, but good advice and overview. I'm new to this rpg and while exploring tournaments and jousting found it useful to create a spreadsheet that allows anyone to plug in a character's base stats and choice of maneuver, and the spreadsheet calculates the cumulative jousting stats for you. I'm curious about making a similar spreadsheet for Intigue, though I expect it will be much more complicated.

My view on the RPG changed after playing in it for a bit. It went up, which is why my review was pretty positive. I'm interested in your thoughts after running it. The Intrigue System can get freaky-doo-wackaloo though. I actually ended up taking all the little charts in that chapter and making a cheat sheet for all my fellow players to reference at a glance. Helped a lot. When the Intrigue System is flowing at a good pace, it's great.

I really like how they approached this whole issue of intrigue. Reading the books and watching the series there points where I will think, oh...he just scored in his intrigue check. Good video! I didn't know that you are playing A Song of Ice and Fire...cool!!! 8-)

Yep, House DeMyre of the Riverlands is the party of ne'er-do-wells being played in my group.

Quite. It's like getting a player with no knowledge of mechanics to describe how he fixes a car and penalising him when he doesn't have a clue.

That would actually be rather good.

Got the main rules on the way for SoIaF. It's one of three games I'm building. The other two being Call of Cthulhu and one of my own creation based on the Crusades.

I can see how "Why don't we just role play it?" would come up. It's such a convoluted system, no wonder I didn't recall anything from skimming the book. I honestly don't see myself using the system as presented; I'd probably tweak it a bit, try to streamline it. I'd love to see the other players in any game, throw in their bid to help one player seduce another. That would be fun to watch.
@TheGentlemanGamer12 жыл бұрын
I agree, but I don't believe it has to be as convoluted.

I can't help wondering how this might work out if it were re-purposed for an ancilla-based Vampire game, since I used to be involved in running one. The social systems we had in play were designed to track status, but I always thought it needed something more to formalise the scheming. Without a formal system, it becomes hard to get players to play along if and when their characters are manipulated and duped.

Good luck with it! Let me know how it goes.

I'm glad you made a video concerning this game/system. It is possibly my favorite, most likely due to the fact it was my first pen & paper game. Still, I agree this particular mechanic is a bet convoluted. Then again, I find many combat systems convoluted. I think it is necessary to grind through the process, because role-playing is not a skill shared equally. Dice are great equalizer, though I myself enjoy RP, being an actor. Luckily the system rewards those skills. The dice als simulate...

It seems to me that each intrigue SHOULD be role played and a plus or minus assigned to the player's die roll depending on his performance. Keep up the good work my friend.

The Gentleman Gamer would you recommend the Song of Ice and Fire RPG? I've heard some people say the combat doesn't work very well.
@ADVSProductions12 жыл бұрын
...the unpredictability that is the hallmark of the game's setting. I think what makes ASOIF RP much like CoC, my other favorite, is that they share a common rule of thumb: things will go badly. Despite all the skill & authority a character might possess, things could turn horrible very quickly--hence, Eddard Stark. The dice do a good job of providing real risk. Sometimes luck is just not in your favor; AKA you roll a lot of 1s. I find Martin's world a world of dumb luck sometimes, anyway.

How do you account for the PC's ability to debate vs. the actual player's ability to get a point across during RP? I typically handle this by asking the player what point he's trying to get across and who he's trying to persuade. Based on this I'll ask for a diplomacy check with applicable modifiers to account for the PC's abilities.

My idea is to run a historical game set in a dying empire that seemed to be at its strongest. The players will find themselves accused of treason and must work hard form the start to stay alive. It will be low fantasy. Thought of it years ago. Then saw Game of Thrones. Thinking about a different emphasis to differentiate my game. Going to use the old Rolemaster system. But I will simplify aspects for playability. Your videos are remarkably helpful.

I have to say I really like this system. Roleplaying social situations and intrigue is all well and good but this would limit player to playing certain types of charaters. For example if all intrigue checks would be based on the actual smarts / charisma of a player no player could ever play a character smarter, more charismatic or better at scheming than himself.
@FlokiVT27 жыл бұрын
The point of it was to not make everyone a master of all. Cligane was a great warrior, but shyt at intrigue. Cerse was a shyt warrior but a master at intrigue. Some can be a jack of all trades but a master at none if they go that route.

it is not disciplinary violence, it's simply that the prosecution of the majority of the population in particular the elderly and disabled to the point of people commiting suicide rather than suffer in the conditions the government places them in evokes feelings of anger and disgust. also in britain 'needs a damn good kicking' is more often a hyperbolic expression as it's pretty rare for us to resort to violence

Very nice, I think more role playing games should have an Intrigue, or more in depth social mechanic. Mostly because combat has so many pages dedicated to it, why not the same for diplomacy and the like? After all in a certain respect talking can be fighting with words :)
