I would recommend Villains and Vigilantes it was the first complete superhero role-playing game. Its second edition featured random character generation, d20-based combat and 'hit points' reminiscent of other early tabletop RPGs, and the option for players to make characters based on themselves. Because superheroes and role-playing games are awesome! It's an unabashedly old-school approach.

My favorite super system has always been HERO/Champions I love the freedom and the crunchiness. The newest edition of the Mutants and Masterminds game (aka DC Adventures) is very much like HERO system with a little less crunch and no “hit points”. I like it quite a bit too. But if you are looking for completely random supers and low crunch you can’t go wrong with Marvel Super Heroes (faserip).

What you are looking for might be the 1982/1984 (depends on the edition) RPG called Golden Heroes. It was released by Games Workshop back in the day before they were the Heisenberg of plastic crack. As for actual superhero RPGs... the first ever game I played was the 2003 Marvel Universe Roleplaying game, which is a diceless, point-buy based system. Instead of rolling dice you assigned "stones" to actions, defense, movement etc and revealed it to your fellow players and GM to determine what happens. There's writeups for loads of characters, and the two sourcebooks (one for the X-Men, one for the Avengers) add even more powers and heroes. The system is quite flexible not not very well balanced, especially when it comes to magic. At one point the book mentions something along the lines of "Magic can do just about anything... as long as you have the stones for it." which forces me to conclude that they created the entire game just to make that one joke. Word has it the game got cancelled on account on it not selling as well as either the most popular Marvel comics or D&D. I've been reading up on Mutants & Masterminds and it seems like a really fun game, but I haven't played it. The rules are available online for free just like they are with Pathfinder. M&M is made by Green Ronin, who've written boatloads of d20 books back in the day. Earlier editions of the game were based off of D20, but the third edition of the rules is an animal of its own and kept only a few of the d20 mechanics. And I've played Champions Online, the MMORPG based on Champions, a superhero RPG that dates back all the way to 1981, the year that Moldvay D&D came to be.

I've always loved Aberrant. I think the d10 system plays really well with a superhero game. Also, the various lists of powers help you build your character however you so choose. And as you gain more power, you gain access to even more world breaking powers. Like an energy beam that can punch a hole through a planet. But, it's not all cookies and milk. There's a sort of corruption system where you can gain powers at a lesser cost. However, you creep farther and farther away from your humanity.

I'm currently waiting for the Smallville RPG from 2010 which I recently discovered and although I haven't played RPGs for 30 years, I absolutely want to read this one since Smallville has been my favourite TV show of all time ever since I discovered it two years ago (I've seen it three times) and the game is said to be psychological and relationship based rather than action based, just like the show was, which is exactly why I love the show so much.

Currently, my favorite superhero RPG is Prowlers & Paragons Ultimate Edition. It has just the right amount of fluff, and just the right amount of crunch for my tastes with a versatile system capable of replicating pretty much any superhero story in a way that is engaging and interesting without bogging the players or GM down with a variety of rules that need to be consulted for minute things. Keeps it rolling.

I loved the original marvel super hero system by TSR it got me into roleplaying games. They had a setting in the "days/nightmares of futures past" time line from the x-men universe it blew my mind. it was a dark apocalyptic setting and all the heroes were dead at the hands of sentinels, you played young mutants desperate to survive. I enjoyed DC heroes system and then later on Mutants and Masterminds which when they did the DC adventures setting really cemented it as my favourite. I'm not sure of the panel type game you mention, but sounds good. i even liked the Aberrant system it had a good setting. The hours i played the original marvel super heroes though, so many good laughs and so many good memories. Excelsior, sorry couldn't resit ;-)

Hey in case ya haven't heard yet, there's a couple fan-hosted CoH/V servers that were super secret for the last 8ish years. They went public ~April '19. If you're like me, logging in and hearing the music alone was enough to get me teary-eyed. Just search for CoH 2019 to get started. It's not very difficult and developers have even added new power-sets AND content that never existed when things went dark in 2012.

My earliest forays into roleplaying were through Marvel Super Heroes. Still one of my favorite systems. I'm talking about the one with the white, green, yellow, and red chart. You can play it very basically (good for kids like I was), or use more complex rules for multiple actions in a round. There were (not sure if they are still around) tons of websites with the various comic book characters converted over into the system, so any official character is out there somewhere. While the core books give you a wide array of Powers, the Ultimate Powers book adds a ton more but at a cost of the characters almost being too powerful

I have become of a fan of World's In Peril, a PbtA game. It's open narrative feel and it's approach to powers in regard to what you can do with them, instead of how powerful you are is refreshing. It even inspired me to start working on my own Superhero RPG, which is it's wee baby stages, but being nurtured by some excellent play test groups as I develop the mechanics.

I've played in (somewhat chronologically organized as I can recall); Marvel Phaserip, Hero Games Champions, Mutants & Masterminds, Villains and Vigilantes, DC Game briefly, and Savage Worlds using their Super Powers Companion book. I've run but not played in Monte Cook's Cypher System supers and played in a Fate game also designed for supers. Of them all, Savage Worlds Supers is my favorite and where my current world was built in. Point-buy to keep things balanced, modular enough to build whatever you want, and the system is not so crunchy as to cause your battle that in real-time would have been over in minutes to last for hours and hours on end... Looking at you Champions! There are things about the system I have to house-rule just like any game, but overall even a newly created hero brought into a game with seasoned heroes will have moments to shine and a great time.

Fixed damage in some superhero games is a turn off for me. FASERIP Spiderman does 40 damage a punch. So i can look at another character and know I will take him out in exactly 3 punches, no more, no less, no randomness. Icons does that too.

Long ago I was into Mayfair's DC Heroes gaming system. I still have the books. More recently i've been exploring the Cypher System by Monte Cook Games and how it can be adapted for superhero play. There's a series of gaming videos produced by Geek and Sundry called Callisto Six which uses Cypher and it's a lot of fun. Callisto 6 combines super heroes with a near future cyberpunk environment and also toys with space aliens and cosmic horror, tho how far its going in that direction remains to be seen.

Have you seen the City of Mist? It's a superhero noir RPG. It's relatively new but looks fantastic. That might just be my deep and certain love of the existentialist noir stories talking. I've been reading the starter set (free on DriveThruRPG), but I haven't had the opportunity to play a game just yet. Be warned: this game is more narrative driven that dice-counting. It even declares itself as being "Powered by the Apocalypse" at one point. (meaning it takes cues from the Apocalypse World System) Although it didn't do well enough commercially to hang around long, I also played the Marvel Heroic Roleplaying (Cortex+). It was fun - if a little too fast to really enjoy being in the Marvel universe. Also, the focus is on being heroic. There's room to make things darker and grittier, but it takes some serious work from both sides of the table to get there.

FASERIP character generation is super easy, but you don't really get any control over the outcome. Most people who play superhero games either want to play existing characters like Spiderman, or a character of their own design. Not many people want to play a randomly generated superhero that may or may not be ridiculously weaker than their teammates.

The game you are referring to is Marvel Universe and there were, X-men, Avengers, Hulk, and maybe a couple more supplements to it. It’s a diceless system and is really neat. I’ve played all systems back to’80, but really like The Aeonverse, Godlike, and Wild Talents. M&M, and V&V are fine, and I reserve some nostalgia for them, but feel that Aberrant, Godlike, and Wild Talents are better systems and more flexible. GURPS is good, but heavy lifting for the gm. Tiny Supers as a good pickup game.

Flavoring is important. Marvel is great but it depends on what the tone and flavor of the game is..Marvel shows flawed imperfect beings rising above with their powers or bequeathed godlike powers yet dealing with consequences of their actions and their existence i.e. Spider Man, Moon Knight, the Fantastic Four, the Avengers and the X-Men. DC portrays gods walking and flying around men. The Flash, the Green Lantern, Wonder Woman and Superman or beings of peak perfection driven by motivations and desires that build a legend to make them a mythological hero in their own right as the Batman of Gotham City is visceral night terror more real there that all of the Camarilla and Sabbat combined. He is the Prince of that city and nobody..nobody wants to owe him any favors.

One thing that has always fascinated me about superhero roleplaying games as opposed to horror or fantasy or even sci fi is that there is a definitive moral compass that is intrinsic to the narrative. Whether the public hates or not or the press media junkets...villains, political conspiracies and big businessmen that feel threatened by your presence in the world that might unravel their plans. And often they go to their possible deaths to serve as shining beacons of hope and justice to a world that some wish to be reminded of and others do not care about as their world for them is too far gone. And your powers, abilities and skills isolate you in a prison of fame and fear and idolatry worship in a recreated, revivified mythology of capricious gods and goddess. No you aren't vampires or werewolves and maybe the world is safer for them because they are not Atlas the titan chained to a world to hold it up as a punishment for his rebellion agonizing every muscle to keep the heavens from falling. Waiting for the time to be reprieved from that burden which will never come... By the way I bought Freedom Squadron and while four color.. this is specialists and counter terrorist operatives skilled and daring G.I.Joe vs Cobra with the serial numbers filed off. An actual play of this will follow shortly.

My personal recommendation is wild talents. It has, hands down, one of the best superhero settings I've ever read. It's the continuation of godlike and it does something I wanted to see my whole life: Create a superhero setting with real consequences. After the war people with superpowers were integrated into society and used their abilities to radically change it like, for example, have you ever wondered why tony starks technology doesn't change the world? Well, in wild talents it changed the world. Seriously, give it a read, you will absolutely love it.

I have yet to successfully start a superhero RPG. It's sort of my gaming white whale. An online group I played in briefly flirted with a Fate-based supers game, which seemed to have promise, but never went anywhere. I do love how cinematic Fate is, and how it lends itself to the action-packed drama of superhero fiction. I also own Godlike, per your recommendations, and would love to explore that more one day. I think Ubiquity could power a fun, pulpy supers game. And as I have been learning more about the Powered by the Apocalypse family of games, Masks piques my interest. I really don't hear enough about this genre of game, and would love to know more about it.

My favorite superhero games in fact are Marvel superheroes, Necessary Evil by Peg Inc because you play as villians trying to save YOUR world and domain from invading horrible aliens, and Heroes unlimited in the Palladium line up. Marvel superheroes as best I can remember, it has been years since I played it; is good due to the so.ewhat limited selection of powers, but you can if I remember correctly, kind combine powers to make fantastical power feats, also the character sheet layout has entries for comic title and first appearance, so a person could actually using that inspiration draw a short comic for their character.

I remember there used to be a miniatures game called Marvel clicks. Later on I do believe D.C. had a version as well if memory serves, anyway the life counter was on each figure and you had to have 5 or 6 figures for a team. Other than that it seems like it played similar to warhamer 40K. Then again it was the early 2000's when this game came out and I may not be remembering it well, as when I had a bit of extra cash for the hobby I was buying cards for the DBZ ccg or MtG if not a new DnD book.

I've played Champions and Mutants & Masterminds. I definitely prefer M&M. I found it funny that you refer to superheroes as "snowflakes" as needing to stand out. Joseph Campbell, who I absolutely adore, called them "dandies" for the same reason and it makes sense: the flair and the outfits are so attention-grabbing; even the dark and gritty superheroes are still showing off, just in a different way. It's this realization that made me appreciate golden age and silver age superheroes more; they're truer to the genre.

The early stuff of Runaways, from Marvel, was written to avoid all that. Yes, most of them have powers of some sort, but they don't have costumes, codenames, catchphrases, or even a team name. They don't go out looking to fight crime, either; they already deal with enough trouble coming to them, they don't need to look for more.

I greatly recommend the Marvel Super Hero Adventure Game. For some reason people seem to like "Marvel Faserip" more, even though Saga System is more descriptive and tematic. I think it's an old game with unfortunately little publicity.

I don't know how relevant this is, but it appears that someone watched this video and has run off and made a new game based upon the description you gave. It's called "Is it a Plane!?" and is currently on Kickstarter, here's a link if you want to have a look: www.kickstarter.com/projects/222832406/is-it-a-plane-comic-book-rpg-that-replaces-dice-wi

Indeed! Or perhaps you can use this to your advantage? Post a vague description of some game that is really obscure that you enjoyed or perhaps even a game that you always wish existed but you've never seen it published and you simply don't have the time yourself to cobble out the full mechanics and setting for. Then just sit back and see if anyone takes the bait.

I'm actually prepping a Mutants and Masterminds game right now, so seeing this made me really happy. I've been a fan of comics for around five years and even though the industry is very different in the modern age there are still exciting stories in those pages that can inspire great RPG plots.

Masks: a New Generation by Magpie Games seems to fit the bill well if you don't mind Powered by the Apocalypse type games. It's made with stuff like Teen Titans, Young Justice, Young Avengers, Runaways, etc. in mind.

ianmoone1412 I played FIASCO with the Star City scenario and went awesome. I had 2 powers: gravity control and multiplication (secretly). In a scene after I blew part of Europe and framed my twin brother, another player got the truth and faced me. In the meeting I told him that everything he said suspected was right so I hugged him and opened my coat revealing an explosive (TNT) belt: " see you in hell" and click. Unexpected to me was that his power was to become ethereal. It didn't end good for me, got to crash a 1km satellite into the city to escape and many things more. Dead was the least of my worries.

I'm running Mutants and Masterminds 3rd edition game right now, set in the DC universe. It's got all the freedom I need, and just about the right level of crunch.

I feel bad that I haen't gotten to play any Super Hero RPGS. One I very much want to try is MASKS, a pbta game inspired by comics/shows like Teen Titans, Young Justice, and Runaways.

I am just using Savage Worlds to continue a game I was running of 13 year old cold war bionic super spies with varying abilities set in the late 1970's. Working for a covert agency known as QSQ. Though I have taken the liberty to rename bionics in this game as cosmutronics..a pioneering step beyond the bionic threshold. The newest reveal in my game details these children did not get their powers by some random accident of fate that left them near death as they were told and rebuilt. In fact they were royal political exiles..ex-pats fugitives fleeing from a military coup in their home dimension were they were superheroes of a bizarre sort. Princes and princess wearing uniforms with sashes, medals and medallions with furred cloaks reminiscent of the Tsars and Tsarinas of old Russia. Perhaps the last of their kind. Their home of origin is the Worldbottle of Ossgwint. A massive rounded beaker suspended in mid air in a massive basilica cathedral architecture spanning the infinite confines of their home dimension of origin. This tilted beaker has a contained ecosystem of lush forests, varying terrains, and sloshing and perhaps swirling upside down alchemical massive bodies of water. Atlas like guardians of monstrous strength both push and pull the mechanism that seals and or releases the cork. Villainy as a battery source taking many forms leading to powers misused for evil gain or malice is a disease in my game that blocks or negates chi, that clogs rivers of ectoplasmic arteries, causes infections and tumors and worse within the spirit animal of the victim. Their powers collectively were meant to sedate, repair and scan/identify subjects of this plague that has spread wildly unchecked across trillions of infinite pan dimensional worlds. They were accosted by a main antagonist and his right hand man and were effectively marooned on Earth. Until said discovery of course. :)
