147 | EP14 | The Gig Triangle with Scott & Ian
Ever heard of the gig triangle? The idea is to use three characteristics (good pay, great songs and the hang!) to help figure out what works and what doesn't work for any particular gig. So, how balanced is your gig triangle? Are you hitting 3 out of 3? In this episode Ian and Scott explore what might be holding you back.

Truely sorry to react again... (third time this podcast?) I promise, this will be the last comment, 🙏. It’s just because I like the main topic you’re talking about. It’s -in a way- the story of my life. I agree with everything you guys are saying! Perhaps one more thing that changed things for me where I live: take care of your instrument and gear, and bring all the stuff to any gig you (or fellow musicians..) might need! In our small town, there’s just two active bassists of my age (45+): this very talented guy I got to know very well, who can also sing like the best and also plays guitar and myself. When I came to live here 16 years ago, there was no work for me whatsoever! He was doing everything. Wich was a lot... It was hard, and I had to look elsewhere most of the time to get work or play with nice musicians, the kind you talk about. But then, he had one issue: he was sloppy about his gear, very sloppy. More than a few times, I had to get my amp and cab(s) at home to help him out last minute, because his broke down. I had to bring him cables, tuners, pedals and strings too. I became some kind of a non payed tech, really, because I attended most of the gigs he did. And his bass... A beautiful ‘77 Gibson G3 that hadn’t had a decent set up in ages! Because I used to work at a great musicstore as a student and learned to work on both guitars and basses there, I asked him to take his bass for a week or so to make it a functioning bass again. More than once. It was always out of tune, because the neck was screaming for help. He said no, because he was cocky as hell! He replied he was like James Jamerson, loved high action and loved fighting the instrument. He didn’t get Jamerson, because he would never have accepted to be out of tune, never. Well, if this guy played an F on the E string it was already out of tune... People and other musicians started to notice. Than I started to getting more calls from artists and bands around the area. I said yes to everything! Money did not matter. He never played a single note in a band again... Now, there’s me and a few younger girls and guys. They’ll be taking over soon, 😄. But, I like them a lot and teach them to take care of their basses and gear. Teach them to set up their basses themselves , what tools to get and how to use them. There aren’t any great musicstores anymore around here that can do that for them, as there used to be way back. Just the big online ones. So, learn to take care of your gear yourself! 🖖

What I learned about shortscale vs. longscale (especially the G string) and or tuning down: it’s not as much the fundamental of a particular note that changes, but it’s more the various under- and overtones that are different. That’s why sometimes playing notes all around the E and A string can sound a little too thick or even muddy on shortscale basses (so, not only the lowest few notes...). But, I really love that for certain music 😄. You can even hear a big difference in tone on the D and G strings on 33’’ basses, like the Rick 4001/4003, or 32’’ basses like some Japanese Fender medium scale Jazzbasses or both of your Kubicky’s. 🖖

I love and play shortscale basses live too! I particularly love the tone on the higher strings both with flats or rounds. Höfners are great basses. Some players have a hard time playing a ‘Beatle bass’. I think it’s because the body makes the bass a little awkward feeling when playing fingerstyle. If that’s the case with you, try a ‘Club bass’! Same tone but way easier to play. 🖖
