Hey Trin! The killer that shoots Lee’s partner at the beginning is not LongLegs, it’s a completely different case. The FBI is so impressed Lee was able to know that the killer was in that specific house that she is then brought on to the LongLegs case because they need her intuition/psychic abilities to solve it.
@VictorGarciaFilms5 ай бұрын
This is exactly right. That whole scene is really all about introducing Lee Harker, not only her psychic abilities but also her palpable panic when her partner gets killed so abruptly. It's very effective in getting the audience to watch the rest of the film through Lee's eyes and to understand her paranoid headspace.

Also, I feel like continuing Longlegs' work would be finishing the girl off - the last piece missing in the pattern of families getting destroyed, though the ritual may have been ruined by the father dying before the child... If she had been corrupted it would fit the plot MUCH BETTER to turn around and turn on the girl, or at least to bring the doll along when leaving (if the writers really wanted an open ending). Instead she left the doll - the possible corruption and nightmarish memories of the event - and walked out with the surviving child, away from the influence which might sway someone to target the girl.
@Esther392335 ай бұрын
In the scene near the beginning where Lee is shown abstract shapes and says what word she associates with them, I remember thinking how random the words were - tiger, box, camera, piano, mother, father (I can't remember them all there might be more). But then when she's in her childhood bedroom later on it becomes clear where those words came from. In her room is small PIANO, next to the piano is a BOX, inside the box is a CAMERA and toy TIGER. Of course there is also a picture of Longlegs in the box, so all these things are part of her memories that were repressed because of the deal her MOTHER made. So what about FATHER? Well, the picture that prompted Lee to say father was none other than an upside down triangle, symbolising the devil. Make of that what you will.

So I posted these snippets of interviews from Oz Perkins where he explains the ending. This is a long read, but you'll get a lot of questions answered: Each paragraph are segments from different interviews where he answers the topic described. On Longlegs' conception "It was built around the character of Longlegs, who was a character that had tried to make himself fit into other projects that I had worked on. When you’re writing all the time and generating specs and no one’s paying you or you don’t have any source material, you’re making shit up all the time. You end up with a universe of things that are swirling around, and you try to pull them out and stick them in. Longlegs was an entity, this shabby - is he a birthday clown? Is he a puppet master? Does he deal with stuffed animals? Is it little pianos? You start to wonder about this person who comes to your kid on their birthday and you’re in another room and you don’t know they’re interacting and that’s weird. He doesn’t abduct the kids because we’ve seen that 1,000 times before. He kind of talks to them. You start to be curious about that. When I decided that I was going to try for a serial killer procedural that was going to be something else, I needed a bad guy. Longlegs was like, “I’ll do it.” In your drawer of ideas, one of them says, “Put me in, coach.” And in goes Longlegs." "The original intention was to make a movie that more people could access, that would please a greater swath of the general audience. I thought the way to do that would be to sort of cue Silence of The Lambs and refresh people's memory of that and their memory of the experience of that, and then snuggle up next to one of the great things of all time as a means of getting into something else, right? Sort of going through the door of that, but then opening up into a different landscape. So that was the intention. That's how I started to move." On the name "We writers just like words. We like how certain words sound and look and shape and feel. Yeah, it has daddy longlegs and a creepy-crawly aspect to it, but it also feels ’70s to me - almost like a Led Zeppelin song or someone would have on the side of their van, something groovy like that. It feels like a vintage word that people wouldn’t toss around much today. It positioned the movie in a weird place. You don’t get to fully understand it. It doesn’t fully fit, which is more alluring to me and creates a curiosity that I think is important." "I don't know if it has meaning or not. It doesn't have meaning. I like words, and it's a good word. It sounds good. It sounds sort of scary but also sort of fun. It sounds pure. It sounds like '70s to me. It sounds like something that maybe Robert Plant would have sung in a Zeppelin song. It has an old pin-up quality to it. It invokes a certain time, I suppose, and there's an awkwardness to it that he has, that the character has sort of an uneasy clumsiness to him. I don't know; it just feels good." On the ending/the goal of the devil "I think the ending for her is about as bad as it could have turned out. Like shooting her mom in the head, that’s about as bad a day as a person can have. So I think that ultimately one could say that the entire movement of the movie-or the entire movement of all of Longlegs’ crimes, starting from crime number one all the way to the Carter family-it’s all about getting this poor girl to a place where she shoots her mom in the head. Like that’s kind of the flourish, the Devil’s ‘Yep, I did that.’ " "That was always the ending. The ending was meant to be tragic. The devil wins again on a small scale. One of the fun things about using the devil as your villain is that the devil never really goes for world domination. The devil always feels like, “I’ll just fuck with this person, I’ll wreck this family, I’ll mess this kid up, I’ll torment this priest.” It’s never like, “I’m going to eat the Vatican.” It never gets to that point for me with the devil. The devil is a little more amusing and playful than that. The story of Lee Harker ends with the ending of the movie. The last shot that she fires is the worst thing that can happen to her." This final tidbit: PERKINS: I've talked about it a little bit. I feel like it is complete for her. Where she has to get to at the end, her final act with her mom is the worst thing that you can do, right? Matricide, let's say, is probably the lowest form of - that's your worst moment, right? You can't be like, “Oh, well, something else sucked worse than that.” So I think the fact that the devil gets it to this place where that's what she has to do, the devil's like, [wipes hands clean]. So it doesn't matter that Ruby's doll has not been broken? PERKINS: Not my problem. MONROE: Hands up on that one. I like that. I feel like that puts my mind at ease a little. PERKINS: It should! It’s contained. It’s done. It’s over.

THANK YOU! I am always curious about interesting horror movies but am way too scared to watch it. This was more than enough to sate my curiosity, thank you for your sacrifice.

i think when lee harker and her partner were going door to door at the beginning of the movie they were looking for an entirely different unrelated killer to longlegs. when the higher ups find out lee "had a hunch" that the killer was in the house before her partner got shot THATS when they put her on the longlegs case since they are stuck and they realize she has such good intuition/luck at finding killers

I thought the only reason Lee didn't shoot the doll was because she ran out of bullets

Lee pulled the trigger several times but had no ammo left she didn’t put the gun down out of some kind of evil but still leaves you feeling that it’s a cliffhanger and she has no escape from this evil 39:24

About the first case, I assumed the man she finds in the room was one of the dads involved in the Longlegs case, especially because we learn the other dads killed their families. I don't think they have to be completely separate cases just to illustrate Lee's abilities.
