I think the allegory for a teen drug use really was creative and really landed well because it really does only take one time for the wrong person to take a hard drug and ruin their entire life

And unfortunately when it's fun you got a high off of it like the montage and you do it with your friends and it seems harmless like no one thinks about the people who are super susceptible to repeated drug use like people who are in a depression or who have mental illness or who are young and impressionable Yeah it was really good I would have literally never left my brother in the room for Mia to make the decision in the first place so it's hard for me to fully empathize with Jade because I just would have removed my brother from the room so no one got a chance to expose him to something I didn't want him to be exposed to and also it was just really sad poor Mia's father by the end of all of this

Not just that, when she first seen the ghost she wanted to back out but the group started screaming and yelling at her to do it. When everything went wrong everyone blamed her, alienating her. She continued to use the hand for comfort. the younger kid was also affected because how young he was. But he had support that Mia just did not have. At the end of the movie, Mia let go of the wheel chair in a moment of clarity but the older sister pushed her into traffic. She needed someone to fight for her like the young kid had but instead she was thrown under the bus. Truthfully, they were all at fault. Why was a 14 year old even at the party? Why did those two kids show everyone the hand if they know it killed people before? It's all very tragic and Mia is very much the victim in all of it.

10:45 The film is a metaphor for drug abuse and addiction, how teens and young adults love the thrill of being high. How it makes ppl feel good the first time so they do it over and over, always chasing that feeling. it’s also about grief and how that can be taken advantage of to turn ppl to drugs and alcohol. It’s rlly great symbolism for addiction and the demons that come with it.

@@axolotlol_You're telling me you'd witness your friends wanting to do drugs, being totally into drugs and wanting your brother to participate and you think nothing bad is gonna happen if you leave him alone with them? And this isn't a situation that "isn't hurting anyone", there is a direct risk of the person being possessed (in the allegory, taking drugs) to get immensely hurt. And then they pressure the kid into doing it and even go past the limit, not caring about his well-being. Sometimes, we make mistakes in who we choose as friends. Especially when you know those friends are into drugs (which the hand is an allegory for) and very much participate in peer pressure, you don't leave your family alone with them. So yes, she is also partially to blame.

The hand and possession is an allegory for drugs and addiction - later in the film Mia thinks the only way she can save Riley is by using the hand even more but in reality when they stop using the hand the spirits get weaker and eventually go away (similar to how people rationalise continuing to use drugs). HEAVY SPOILERS AND THEORIES: I think that when Riley was possessed by Mia’s mom it was her mom. He used her nickname and his face was warm with red around his mouth and eyes like he’d been crying. And the spirit there was apologizing, whereas her “mom” that she saw after that was defensive saying she didn’t commit suicide. Mia was chasing the feeling of being able to speak with her mom again, and the water spirit took advantage of that. Grief is a vulnerability and the spirits knew they could control Mia through that. I believe some or all of those spirits were suicide spirits: Spirits that killed themselves; And/or wanted to harm themselves or others. The horny spirit could’ve killed themself from asphyxiation. Like the choking and shit. Many people die from cutting off their oxygen after an orgasm. They also forget that after an orgasm your legs get weak, and the belt or hand or whatever can tighten on your neck and you die. I also think the spirit that possessed Riley afterwards was the first ghost that had control of Duckett. Because Duckett stabbed himself right in his head/eye whatever and why would a teenager wanna stab himself so brutally like that. And his brother noticed Duckett wasn’t himself and broke into the door he was in. And idk abt Duckett but I don’t think you just would stab your brother. This explains the 90 second rule- you can’t let it go more than 90 seconds because the spirit stays with you. And that may or may not be deadly. Just like Mia, her demise at the end, just like Riley who never stopped being possessed- tried to kill himself multiple times. 90 seconds is a minute and 30 seconds which seems like a long time but can be a blink of an eye as well. I also thought that it was really interesting that the little girl spirit Mia was talking to (in the hospital on Riley’s bed) said “I let you in” instead of Mia saying it. It open’s a whole new window of the spirit realm. The evil spirit is still inside Riley even though they took the hand off of him. I think that when Mia let Riley have the hand for more than 90 seconds, it wasn’t Mia’s mom anymore. The candle is like a beacon of light. It attracts spirits to it like a moth to a flame. It’s possible that other spirits can take the drivers seat after 90 seconds. I believe that first time that it was acting like Mia’s mom through Riley that it was her mom. And then another spirit- who I’m assuming was Duckett possessor took charge. Another theory I have is that you’re conscious when you get possessed. This is true because when Daniel finished getting possessed after making out with the dog he looked sick and told everyone to delete that video. He ran off really upset. And that also means Riley felt all that pain. So basically when you’re possessed, it’s like being a passenger in your own car. You can see everything that’s going on but someone else is driving. And taking charge. That’s all I had to say
@pretoilustra
@pretoilustra 9 ай бұрын
I believe that also I think the Directors said that too, is the first time we don’t see the spirit so is most likely that it is in fact her mom, but don’t think any spirit comes in contact more then once, the longer they’re dead the more foggy there memories get and they just become vengeful not by choice but as a consequence of being in the limbo.

Riley was only possessed once the drowned lady had spent more than 90 seconds within Mia. The spirit took Mias memories and wouldve known to call her by that nickname. i feel like it’s looked over and forgotten, but when mia took her first turn she went over 90 seconds. hayley yells “that’s over 90 seconds, Joss!” & asks “are you okay? we went a bit over.” when Mia regains consciousness. i think the spirit she saw the second time, the one who looked to be drowned, had remained with her in some capacity and that was why she was able to see things without using the hand. she mentions how lonely she is once or twice, she’s jealous of her friend’s relationship, she’s still grieving her mother…i think the spirits might’ve used riley to get to mia, their original target. she was incredibly vulnerable and susceptible to the hand’s ability, seeing things without using it, and when she dies riley gets to recover and move on? strange

To add on what you’re saying, to me the kangaroo in the beginning had to be a part of the foreshadowing. Riley suffered through the torture of being possessed but after Mia basically sacrificed herself, she saw the outcome of Riley and how he got better. She felt lonely because not only she’s grieving over the loss of her mom but also Jade was dating her ex. @@haileys1701 I think it's just a (well done) failed character arc. Like at the start, Mia couldn't kill the kangaroo, and a typical character arc would have her be able to do that by the end, via killing Riley. But she fails to do this which gets her killed, but this saves Riley with the theme being leave stuff alone (the body will reject the spirits over time, and best not to use the hand at all). Also, I'm pretty sure Mia was pushed at the end by Riley's sister, but I'll need to rewatch

okay my brother and i came up with a theory on the drive home from the theatre. one point that confused us was why mia was seeing demons without the hand even before riley was attacked. if you look at the very first demon that mia lets in, she has boils and markings of someone who was been drowned. As the ritual reaches its end, we never get to see how long she was possessed however we know that if she goes over the demon will stay. this was first foreshadowed that mia had gone over when her and riley were sleeping and you see the first demons hand. everytime mias "mom" talks to her we see her more wet, and drowned looking. towards the end it shows the demon losing the form of mias mom and becoming fullly drowned. this follows what cole (duckette) said in the train, the longer they stay, the weaker they get. edit: my brother and i also found the true horror to be what it means to have a soul. we learn that the spirits can take the soul of their host after killing them. this was why rileys demon was trying to end his life at every given moment. i think this film does a great job at showing what it means for a demon to "have your soul" we are never given a true explanation but rather a lot of incredibly scary imagery of riley being tortured

They haven't got a clue what they're actually dealing with yet still do it for entertainment value. They don't comprehend the ramifications of their actions and avoid taking any responsibility. @@taylormade9748 Oh for sure, Riley and Jade are fine in my books. It's people like Joss and Hayley who are the problem I'd say. Still they all, minus Jade, participated in letting an underaged boy perform an objectively troubling act-who btw only did it to fit in with older kids. Hayley and Joss knew what happened to the brothers at the start of the film yet still wanted to try it out with their "friends". As soon as Riley, a literal introverted pure child got hurt they went on about who to blame so that they wouldn't get into trouble. Also, just like with drugs or alcohol, these kids didn't take into account (or simply didn't care) that some people are more susceptible to things like chemical substances or psychological interference (concerning mental health). Socially pressuring them into an unexplainable clearly scary phenomenon aka the possession, explicitly or even implicitly, is simply a subculture that lacks people taking accountability for irresponsible, potentially harmful behaviour. In the end they're your typical teens messing with things they don't know but think they'll manage.

I’m really hoping that the prequel and sequel end up being released as one movie where we can see somebody try to get revenge for Mia and Duckett along with some flashbacks to the lore of the hand. Something that irked me was how much Mia was scapegoated by the ppl around her throughout the movie even when they know that the evil spirits can take over and use their trauma against them and how a lot of other ppl were guilty af along the way too like Joss and haley being enablers and running away from responsibility as soon as they can, as well as whoever gave the hand to duckett. It’s also really sad to think about how lost Mia was and desperate for a connection, how some things could have been avoided if her dad had just communicated better or her friends had cared enough about her, only for her life to end with her best friend technically killing her and thinking her dad died by her own hand.

Like one bit i rly like in this movie is how by camera framing+effects we get the idea that Mia feels disconnected by the adults around her (except from her bffs mum who....tbh isnt even home most of the time). In the first shot we see Mia in, she is washing the dishes and someone is talking to her but we dont hear them properly or see their face. Then later on, whenever she speaks with her dad, he is always in the shadows and his face is obscured. We only see his face near the end of the movie when he makes an active effort to connect with her. But by that time, its too late. Also finally, another thing that is The Whole Point of this movie is that teenagers sometimes do stupid things and dont have the life experience and mental capacity to deal with things. This extends to irresponsible drug use(ie use of the hand), risk taking behaviour, coping with trauma, giving in to peer pressure etc etc. So while i do agree that they all made some mad choice, i also understand that theyre messed up shithead teens so ofc theyre not going to make the best choices.

At the end some people think Mia jumped but I think Jade pushed her. Because we saw that Mia wasn’t able to kill the kangaroo but Riley was which might be a genetic thing or whatever. But when I saw jade I thought she would be the type to put the kangaroo out of its misery so pushing Mia to save her brother would’ve just been something she did without hesitation

Seeing Danny and Michael, aka RackaRacka, succeed with this movie has been amazing to watch. I’ve known of their skits for years, and to see that they had finally made it to the big screen is what made me wanna see it. I loved this movie. it was so good and if you’ve seen their videos, their style of action and sound design is all over this movie. They have made videos on their channel about their experience making the movie, it getting picked up by A24, and promotions; and it’s definitely worth checking out. So inspiring ❤️

I saw this at the drive ins. We had trouble finding the movie so we missed the opening and the kangaroo and we were still blown away. The camera work was the most creative ive seen in years, the main actress and riley were absolutely amazing. The drug allegory was so good. As soon as i finished it i wanted to watch it again. Me and the party we went to see it with had fun discussing how much was in her head and how much was real.

The concept, the details, and the aesthetics of this movie was stunning to me. I’ve seen it twice now and what I love about it the most is the depth of the main character we get to see. I’ve already ranked this a 5/5 on my letterboxd. I think overtime, this movie will have to be an example of a classic paranormal horror movie. What I would like to see in horror movies is the POV from the paranormal side. We don’t get to see that, and that makes me hopeful at least so that we get more storytelling horror movies.

It's really interesting viewing this through the perspective of a drug overdose case some of the points Trin bring up seem quite ironic though of course her stating for the support of the main character but things like "you two in the back are supposed to be experts" more often than not your druggy friends aren't going to be pharmaceutical experts to know what's in the drugs they're handing you and why things turn out that way when they do as well as well as the motive for Mia to save Riley by having him do it one more time seems parallel to the mindset of a drug fiend too far gone unable to see the negative effects of their affliction instead suggesting just "one more" will/might help said victim "I just need one more man" and it'll help or it'll help me figure it out... Side not I have spoken to friends who have tried dmt and how they speak of it almost being a supernatural out of body experience where you die and are reborn ergo "ego death" and the characters in the movie seem to be in a translucid state akin to death/dying seems really interesting obviously we all had the same takeaway but I just wanted to type out my thoughts...

The reason the characters find certain things funny is cause they reflect Australian teens and young adults well, we take the piss out of most things and in while it seems rude to someone who’s not from Australia, its not really seen as rude or mean here.

I watched this right before you uploaded and I don’t even know how to feel about this movie , it’s got great cinematography acting sound design and an eerie atmosphere overall , it left me feeling so bleak at the end and I don’t know if that was the intention of the director but the film seems less like a horror and more a tragic story . There’s obviously the allegory of drugs and addiction there too , I’ve never seen a film that made me feel sorry for the people being tortured but I was honestly hopeless for riley and Mia . I think the ending was really well done but I wish some themes could’ve been stated abit more clearly but I’m definently gonna enjoy it more on a rewatch

Hey Trin, this commentary/reaction was really good. I have an A24 recommendation called Beau Is Afraid. By the same guy who made Hereditary and Midsommar. It's deep, funny, and kind of scary. Definitely makes you think, and Joaquin Phoenix does a great job as the lead.

I think Riley got possessed by another spirit b/c when a spirit is possessing them they like throw their head back while choking. That’s what happened when everyone else had that same reaction. So what I think happened is the mom (or the spirit pretending to be her mom) was kicked out & whoever Mia was talking about while she was possessed was waiting on them to let him play so that spirit can take over & clearly harm poor Riley. That’s what I think happened with that. Also Mia maybe realized that the spirit wanted Riley for good so at the last minute she took his place. That’s my thoughts love it watched it 3x already.
