Thank you, as always, for the chat, Malcolm :) I was glad to see that Clare Leighton did the illustrations in today’s book. I always thought that a reading from her book, Four Hedges, would be wonderful! Anyone who has a love for nature and enjoys Tolkien’s lush descriptions of the shire would also enjoy her work. She was an extremely talented author.

All Hawthorns have a magical quality. I remember coming across one on the South Downs which was ɓeing used as a wishing tree - it was bedecked with fluttering ribbons. It's interesting that one originated from the Holy Land in accordance with the legend.

Hi Malcolm, just wondering if you've read and/or have any opinions on Don Quixote? Especially the chapter where he talks about Arthur returning as a Raven? Seems like that's a book often left out of the Arthurian tales, but there's a good bit about Arthur in there. Thanks for sharing all your wonderful thoughts with us.

I was struck by the name Wearyall hill. As you mentioned it is probably from the same root as Wirral (therefore from old English “myrtle tree” + “corner”). However as a speaker of Welsh it struck me as being cognate to the word “Gwiriol” meaning true positive or genuine. The staff of Joseph being all of these!
@MalcolmGuitespell2 күн бұрын
That's very interesting. There's often more than one possible genealogy for a given word!

That's interesting on two points. 1)Numbers 17:1-13 Aaron's rod blossomed and produced almonds as a sign to the Israelites so a Christian must find the origin of this legend plausible at the very least. 2)My dad always said that trees can produce fruit twice in the year. On the day they're planted and in season. All fruits trees we've tried it with do the same. People's faith can make things happen.

Just out of interest.... At the Councils of Pisa in 1409, Constance in 1417, Siena in 1424, and Basel in 1434... ...the English Bishop/Cardinals delegations contended that, “the Churches of France and Spain must yield in points of antiquity and precedence to that of Britain as the latter Church was founded by Joseph of Arimathea immediately after the passion of Christ.” This assertion was finally acknowledged at the Council of Constance. As such, England, not France, is the Eldest Daughter of the Church.
