Deleted scenes always have a fascination but it’s very rare that it wasn’t for the best they were cut. In Godfather Part II, the only scene I think should have been included is Vito witnessing the street hoods cutting Don Fanucci’s throat. It’s a good scene and it wouldn’t have hurt pacing and it added a lot of period flavour. Explained the scar Fanucci had in later scenes too. But most importantly it shows us why Vito began to question if Fanucci really was connected to The Black Hand. It was that incident combined with a few other clues which lead him to come to the realisation Fanucci was a fraud he could bump off with no consequences.

@@YoRon427 Everyone compares the movie to the Book... The movie is a different medium of story telling. There are limitations and formats to follow that the book does not have to. And many details from the book obviously have to be omitted. Also, most people have this attitude that a Book is always superior to the Movie adaptation... I disagree. Sometimes the Original Writer of the Book is lesser than the director who interprets it. Case in Point: "The Shinning" by Stephen King. Stanley Kubrick's movie Adaptation is far superior. Brett Easton Ellis' American Psycho is another great example of this.

This scene suggests to me that Coppola was correct in deleting most or all of the scenes he deleted, interesting though some of them are. Compare this scene with that of Luca Brasi's murder, the whole atmosphere of which was chillingly credible, starting from the fact that the hit was set up so could be no witnesses, even though it was in a hotel. This scene involving Neri slapping the manager around in front of hundreds of hotel/casino clients stretches the audience's 'suspension of disbelief' to breaking point, like something out of a B movie. The director didn't once do that in what he included, and what he cu,t from Godfather I and II ... every scene realistic. Godfather III broke with this many times although it has been argued that in that third film the director was trying a new departure, some kind of 'modern opera' where melodrama is the order of the day. I far preferred the first two movies for their sustained realism. I'm glad Coppola left scenes like this Neri one out.

This is just one of several other scenes that were rightfully cut from this film. The character of Al Neri was not meant to speak this much. However, apart from that, this scene also takes away from the cool and mystery of the character. Al Neri was always an enigma, but this scene takes all that away. I agree with the consensus that his dialogue was delivered weakly & although that could possibly be remedied through AD work in post-production, this scene wasn't necessary to push the overall plot of the story. It is extremely interesting to see Al Neri at work though. You can tell that he doesn't lose control & only pushes back as far as he needs to in order to achieve his goals...and yet, there is a focused rage that makes him just as feared as Vito's enforcer Luca Brasi. Another point is that this answers the question of why Neri isn't acting as Michael's bodyguard. The veteran, experienced (& uninvolved w/the Family) Sicilian tough guy Bussetta travels with Michael while Neri continues to act in full capacity as a Corleone Family representative. The conclusion where Neri calmly sets the chair down & makes the performers finish their show is just fantastic. I have a totally different perspective on the exclusion of the Fabrizio subplot which is briefly seen at the end of this clip. That is one very short subplot that perhaps should have been left in. It's not important to the overall story arc of GF2, but it does make crystal clear that anyone who crosses Michael Corleone cannot run or hide from his reach.

There are some deleted scenes that I wish had stayed in, but I'm glad this one was cut. I like the idea of Neri as Michael's silent enforcer in the shadows, cool and calm, you don't see him until your number's up - basically he's Michael's very own Luca Brasi. This scene compromises that characterization a little, and not for the better.

Neri bitch-slaps him. Like the guy doesnt even deserve to be hit like a man. LOL! Great scene, I loved Neri. He had a better and more deserving part in the book.

It seems Neri is a man of culture.

What a terrible scene, good thing they deleted it.

So funny how Al interested to watch the rehearsal instead of leave them and didn't care at all.

They should have had this scene in the original movie, crazy idea to delete it.

Makes sense to cut it if you think about it, if Coppola had to cut down the length of the film it makes sense to cut long scenes that aren't overly important to the plot.

So crazy to delete any scene in either I or II..

@@sonnyhale I don't particularly like this scene so I think they were right to cut it. In fact, I can't think of any deleted scene from Parts I and II that I felt should have been left in.

@@sonnyhale This is my first time watching this scene, and having watched the Godfather over and over for 30 odd years now, It completely changed my image of Neri ... for the worse... because I always pictured him as a silent enforcer, and not a speaker or negotiator. He's the guy you send in when 'Negotiations' fail. I'm also glad they cut this scene.

This is a pretty elaborate shoot for a deleted scene. They had to put together that entire "rehearsal" show and sets. Unless it was something already happening that they piggybacked off.

Happy they cut this scene from the movie, Neri didn't look intimidating at all to me & hearing him talk doesn't help either

I think having Neri be sinister and non-vocal was a great editing decision
