The Godfather Trilogy (1972-1990)
Remastered and Restored in 4K with HDR-10 and DOLBY VISION, this collection includes Academy Award winners for Best Picture The Godfather and The Godfather Part II, alongside the acclaimed conclusion Mario Puzo's The Godfather Coda: The Death of Michael Corleone, as well as an extensive array of new and legacy behind-the-scenes special features.

The monumental effort included the following:
Over 300 cartons of film were scrutinized to find the best possible resolution for every frame of all three films.
Over 4,000 hours were spent repairing film stains, tears, and other anomalies in the negatives.
Over 1,000 hours were spent on rigorous color correction to ensure the high dynamic range tools were respectful of the original vision of Coppola and cinematographer Gordon Willis.
In addition to the 5.1 audio approved by Walter Murch in 2007, the original mono tracks on The Godfather and The Godfather: Part II have been restored.
"We felt privileged to restore these films and a little in awe every day we worked on them," said Andrea Kalas, senior vice president, Paramount Archives. "We were able to witness first-hand how the brilliant cinematography, score, production design, costume design, editing, performances, and, of course, screenwriting and direction became famously more than the sum of their parts. It was our commitment to honor all of the filmmakers' exceptional work."
In addition to the widely available 4K Blu-ray set, a 4K Blu-ray Limited Collector's Edition will also be released in deluxe packaging and includes a hardcover coffee table book featuring stunning photographs, as well as portrait art prints on archival paper. Both 4K Blu-ray sets include new bonus content including an introduction to The Godfather by Coppola, a featurette about the preservation process, photos by acclaimed photographer Steve Schapiro, home movie footage, and comparisons of the new restoration to earlier versions of the films. Hi Chris, Many thanks for sharing this review of The Godfather trilogy, & a long time coming, which is a good thing as it sounds like they"ve taken their time with the proper 4K upgrade & given it the full special treatment & rightly so. I have a UK Zavvi collectors set on pre-order & can"t wait to see how this looks, & will do a trilogy week on re-vistiing the movies again, i still prefer the first movie slightly over Part 2, & the first movie is in my personal top 10 list of greatest films. Great video, however you had mentioned 1&2 are from the same scan from 08 and this isn't much sharper than said release? I saw another YT video (name escaping me and I'm too lazy to find in my history) where they discussed repairing the original negatives for this and putting more effort in cleaning the scan up than a typical 4k remaster as this film is regarded so highly and expectations would be higher. What type of screen did you watch on out of curiosity? You have been blessed to see this already and my preorder of the collector's edition won't arrive until end of March, so unfortunately I can't comment on the remaster quality yet. I'll circle back once I can see it for myself.

The 4K editions look excellent, but my point was that since the films were restored from previous elements, the comparison between the Blu-ray and 4K isn’t a huge difference. Sure, it’s more film like now and sharper with deeper blacks, but it’s not like the Blu-ray editions were awful. It’s just better defined now in 4K. I watched the films on the Sony XR65A90J.

@@TheBluRayCritic I understand. I'm curious if this restoration may be better enjoyed on an OLED due to how dark the film is. Not saying one screen type is ultimately better than another. I view screen types like pizza styles- it's all good, just different types have their own pros and cons. I've subscribed and will circle back once I get my copy. Amazon screwed me on some preorders last year, so I just pre ordered on bestbuy as well so hopefully I'll get the collector's edition one way or another! Will return or ebay if end up with 2.

Greetings Jim. Yes, the original mono tracks for films 1 & 2 are on UHD. Personally, I like the latest cut of part 3, “The Godfather Coda.” Although, the theatrical version is good in its own way, I just find the pacing better and some of the changes that were made with the latest cut.

I did listen to both restored mono tracks and they sound excellent, (at least to my ears.) But for review purposes, I mainly concentrated on the Dolby 5.1 mixes since they are the default tracks.

Two weeks before, the Godfather movie was re-released in Singapore, I have went there to watch it for a first time, actually this movie was my most awaited watchlist flick but after the movie ran 2hours and I quit the theater and felt this movie was overrated. Is this a bad decision or what. Any ciniphiles here ?

How about putting back the scenes that were in it when I first saw them at the Cinema in 1972 and 1974. It infuriates me every few years they bring something else out, how about the film as was all those years ago. Look up Halliwells Film Guide for the running time when the first two films came out and then look at your dvd. Does Francis know does he even care.... Is it a country thing I'm from the UK. Its the greatest film ever made and Sergio Leone went thru hell trying to get his final cut of OUATIAmerica out. Not one of the scenes that have been cut fail to move the story along......in fact most of them are essential, the Genco death bed scene, all of the revenge killings especially Fabrizio for Appolonia, there's so much its criminal
