The Buu Arc is probably one of the greatest examples of the faults in Japan's weekly manga industry. It is clear that Toriyama is done with all of this by this point, but he *can't stop* because he'll lose everything if he does. Coincidentally, it reminds me of that stuff TFS said on as to why they won’t be finishing abridged; Essentially, their work ethic has a high bar that they tried to top and meet at every episode. This subconsciously creates a bar of standards in the majority of the viewers minds. So even if they weren’t feeling it and weren’t at the top of their game, they COULD’VE continued with DBZA regardless. both of yours wouldn’t like it. Once you know what someone produces when they’re at their best, and they do it consistently; it becomes utterly TRANSPARENT when you’re half-assing it. And when creating shit is literally your job and people come to you for your quality and consistency? People will speak with their wallets and you’ll start losing much more. What would the result be like? Well- The regular, canon Buu saga. Just misorganized mess with some good ideas littered throughout that brings the whole series down a peg because of it. Its just what happens when you bite off more than you can chew. At least in TFS’ case, if abridged ever comes back, youll know immediately that it was decision the team made after thinking about it long and hard. And not just following in the footsteps of toriyama and doing it out of obligation. This isn’t TFS dickriding either, I genuinely feel sorry for toriyama and the way things turned out for him. I was just using TFS cause they had a coincidental parallel to an issue that actual series faced too.

Speaking of Goku pretending to be thoughtful of the future, he never realizes during this arc (or at all really) that he was wrong about why he believed he should stay dead and away from Earth. His reasoning was that he would attract bad guys to Earth and that would cause it to be in danger. But he never realizes that Babidi and all of his subjects (including Buu) did not come to Earth because of Goku, and were already there with their own plans before Goku even showed up. Even when Babidi sent henchmen to the tournament to gather energy for Buu's revival, they were only looking for strong fighters with lots of energy. They weren't specifically looking for Goku and co., and didn't even know who any of them were. So really, in-universe, Babidi and his subjects would have threatened the Earth anyway, whether Goku was there or not. That would logically mean that Goku has no reason to stay dead anymore (outside of his own self-interest), yet he now insists in this arc that protecting the Earth should be left to the next generation. Even if the part about leaving it to the next generation were true, that doesn't mean that Goku need stay dead while that happens. Goku just implies a False Dichotomy, and no one questions him on it. It's just weird.

@@kmgyening Hell as this arc plays out it further proves the opposite that the Earth needs Goku. Everyone is still alive and because of Babadi giving everyone live video feed no one would refuse Goku's plea for help. Was this ever explored: Who's forcing Goku to return to the Afterlife? If he refused to go with Uranai Baba, what would be the consequence? He said earlier, there would be no one in the Afterlife who could equal him. Even Enma complains about the increase in deaths laters due to Boo (they probably don't get paid per soul). It would have been in his interest to keep Goku on Earth, it they asked Kaio to make such an arrangement with Enma. Vegeta could go back to Earth simply on the merit of him being useful there. They could have even used the last wish to ressurrect Goku. He only stayed dead after Cell because he wanted to at that time.

The worst thing about the Room of Spirit and Time stupidity is that it's completely unnecessary. Toriyama is in complete control over how strong or weak everyone is. He could just have Goku and Piccolo do the logical thing and throw the boys in the Room of Spirit and Time for the full year so that they can learn Fusion in time _and_ just get way stronger on their own, and _still_ be not quite strong enough to take Boo down (or maybe they'd be strong enough to fight the current fat Boo but not the new-and-improved "Super" Boo that's going to show up in a few chapters). Regarding the Gohan thing, what irritates me nearly as much as the plot-hole induced stupidity preventing the rest of the characters from figuring out Gohan _should_ be alive is that they all write him off as _permanently_ dead. As for Gohan being assumed dead, I just took it from the “He died in that tiny time gap between the wish and the reveal” option. Dragonball’s already done the “Alive for only a few literal minutes” suspense with the Namekian Grand Elder and Kami in the Saiyan saga to get Goku back to Earth, so it was logical to me that it could be done in the opposite direction: Shenron makes the wish too early, Gohan dies in the interim, and now it’s too late to redo that wish. Granted, this idea would/should have then been followed up with Goku and co. realizing that Gohan’s still not giving any ki, and then realizing that sequence of events, but this doesn’t happen. @PrimeroJinJusuke3 жыл бұрын
@@MustacheDLuffy Only a couple of hours at most had occured by that point, and they just used the Dragon Balls to revive a bunch of people. So, the Dragon Team must be under the impression that Gohan died after Shenlong was summoned, despite Piccolo, Kuririn and Goku being under the false impression that Gohan was killed before the Dragon Balls were used. (And he really would have died after the summoning of Shenlong, if it wasn't for the Kaioshin and Kibito, so that's a fair assumption.) At any rate, even when Gohan isn't severely injured, why would the Dragon Team think they can't passively sense Gohan's ki when he's not fighting at the moment? It's not like they showed a scene of Goku actively trying to locate him on Earth. It makes sense when Goku sensed him in the after life, not only because Goku being in much better proximity to sense him, but Gohan was also using his ki to train with the very heavy Z-Sword. We later see that Piccolo failed to sense Dende's ki because he was under the belief that he's dead and because Piccolo didn't bother to try to sense someone else's ki on wide areas. It also throws bad shades on Dende because as the God of Earth, he can observe the entire planet, and he had seven years of training to master that skill. He had the power to confirm if Gohan and the Kaioshin are dead or not. Heck, he even has the power to see which ones died and which ones didn't. He and Piccolo are later watching the whole friendship scenes with Boo and Satan. I can understand that Dende might not be able to watch everyone at the same time, but it shouldn't be hard for him to quickly confirm if Gohan's really dead when the initial meeting occured. Piccolo has that power too and we have seen him using it during the Cell Saga. He also should have been able to confirm if Gohan and the Kaioshin are really dead. Even if Gohan was dying after the wish, they should have figured out that one of the possible victims was either dead or alive. Because if he was alive, they would bring him to God's palace to bring him up to speed. And if he wasn't revived, then they should have guessed that he's not dead after all and they should look for him as quickly as possible. Dende and Piccolo have the power to track him easily on Earth.

I might be early but I just realized something when the Z sword was brought up: Goku only having 24 hours of Back To Life time to spend at the tournament might be a dig at the anime. The anime always depicted the tournaments taking multiple days. They register then go to hotels, and sometimes they'd go back to their hotels for the night after only a few fights, ect. So if the anime wanted to depict this new improved Boudokai, they literally could not do it the way they always had by having it cover multiple days. "Goku is ONLY on earth for 1 day of 24 hours, so the tournament HAS to take place over one day, just like it ALWAYS HAD BEFORE YOU GOSH DARN ANIME PRODUCTION STUDIO!"

Do you think this is where Toriyama's exhaustion after 10 years of writing finally starts catching up? Or is it perhaps the leniency of his editor showing its cons? @Skywardflare7583 жыл бұрын
What kills me about both the Gohan thing and the Room of Spirit and Time thing is that they had convenient ways around it already in the story. Piccolo was turned to stone earlier and later Buu absorbs people without killing them. There are multiple ways for Gohan to be effectively dead that a generic bring back the dead wish doesn’t work to undo. And for the Room of Spirit and Time, they already had the two person limit. They could’ve played with that, meaning Piccolo and the boys couldn’t go in together, especially with fusion muddying the number of people, without risking the room trapping them forever. This is probably the third most frustrating section of what would otherwise be my favorite arc (the other two being how fully abandoned the school stuff and characters are and how the whole Gohan build up leads into a giant mess).

Something else to consider: Goku arrives just as 1 wish has been made and there are 1 or 2 other wishes remaining. Why doesn't Goku use this opportunity to wish him back to life in that very moment? The fact that nobody suggests that is so strange, and, of course, nobody ever comments on it. Instead, Goku just says to the dragon that's enough and that's that. Since Gohan's not dead, the dragon could just tell them that, and then they could wonder where he is or even wish him to Capsule Corp. to heal him.
@pokesonav3 жыл бұрын
Considering that just going SS3 shortened Goku's time on Earth, it's probably some personal timer that's directly tied to his body, and not just Earth's time zones. Which means that Room of Spirit and Time wouldn't really help in this case. Like, maybe Goku is just given a personal "mortal energy reserve" that's keeping him connected to living world and usually would be enough to last him a day, but straining himself makes it burn away faster?

If the Cell Saga was Toriyama's writing style all kind of working out in the end, then the Buu saga is his writing style completely falling apart part way through. I think on an old interview he said he sort of stopped planning chapters ahead after Trunks showed up. I think despite all its flaws, it sort of worked in the Cell Saga. Everything game toghther, and there was even a slight theme to it with father's and sons. (Goku/Gohan, Vegeta/Trunks, Gero/Cell) Though I doubt it was intentional on Toriyama's part. The Buu saga on the other hand feels aimless. Sure things happen, but it legit feels like 5 separate stories, which don't really fit together. It doesn't help the villian themselves is pretty much 3 separate characters that just happen to share the same name Buu.
@Humorless_Wokescold3 жыл бұрын
With all the comedy, to me it looks like Buu-era Toriyama desperately wanted to go back to a more light hearted story but knew the audience probably wasn't interested in that. I don't have enough information to postulate this, so correct me if I'm wrong, but maybe Toriyama was really burned out at this point? Like I said, I don't know if that actually happened to him, it just strikes me as a familiar pattern.
@42Caio3 жыл бұрын
I don't think it's an issue with burnout alone. I mean, it's a part of it but the mistakes in keeping track with all the concurrent plotlines and timetables and rules is very similar to the issues the middle of the Cell arc had. I think Toriyama simply let both of these arcs get too complicated with too many moving parts for his on the fly writing style.

Now I do wonder if they never adress why Goku can´t be in the Room, sure they could say 2 people, but then they are 4 later with Piccolo, Buu and the kids so that rule seems to be out. I still think Piccolo is the best one to show and tell how it works becuse at this point everyone else are so stupid and absent minded that I would´t trust them how to post a letter. Like let´s say Goku shows Krillin. He would be like this "Eh how did it look now again, you did this and fusion, but how was it again."
