At what point should we do what I would call the palm punch. are you initiating that at the top of your swing and then just the amount of time that it takes gets it to extend at 7:15 or do you wait until your swing is around 7:15 and then initiate the punch?

....this video has explained to me what has confused me for years...I played Natural Golf ( or tried )...aka Moe Norman...let’s agree he was simply one of the greatest ball strikers...and after watching all his videos on KZbin and buying the course...all I could get was inconsistency on the course because you just can’t copy the uniqueness others....Moe said his secret was in his ‘VERTICAL DROP’...but I had no idea what he meant...and all Moe could explain was his ‘feel’...now, I believe, what YOU describe as 7:15 is in actuality what Moe was doing...and in the above video, the explanation completely details the mechanics ...over the years a variety Golf swings have evolved...but I believe which ever you choose, the 7:15 drop may well be the integral part of every downswing...
@HolyGrailOfGolf3 жыл бұрын
Yes, I agree. If you remember, Moe would address with his club way behind the ball near 7:15. I think he did that because that's the direction he was swinging. I think this is the basic and general problem with golf instruction. People who hit the ball well do this without knowing it. They all describe what they think they're doing and not what they're actually doing.

Big question here? also how does this relate to your previous video where you are hitting a imaginary golf ball with the middle of the shaft? do you still push down to 7:15 or 5:15 from a swinger's standpoint. thanks, enjoyed your videos
@HolyGrailOfGolf4 жыл бұрын
The green line is the imagined path of the clubhead. When the arc of the swing is reduced or shallowed it's when the club is parallel to that green line or the imagined path of the clubhead. Most people believe the shallowing happens much closer to the ball and they try to make that happen with disastrous results. If you look closely to the video on the left I put an "imaginary ball" in the way of the center of his shaft. He's actually hitting that imaginary ball backward slightly.

To be clear are you saying in effect that applying the Overhand swing that the clubface feeling very open prior to impact will square or close without you having to do anything?...ie roll the forearm & wrists. Can I just swing the club down into the ground as you explain & prior to impact the clubface squares? Is this achieved by 'hammer action' of the hands into the ball (& not hand rotation) & torso rotation to the target direction?.
@HolyGrailOfGolf3 жыл бұрын
It's a little bit of all of the above as well as the engineering of the club, but otherwise, yes. It's basically impossible to swing the club through impact wide open. Your body and the engineering of the club will not allow it. The reason most people slice is that they close the club too early and then yank on the handle and the clubface opens through impact but if they'd have left it open to begin with it would close on it's own.

How do you feel about the pump drill? These motions look very similar.
@HolyGrailOfGolf3 жыл бұрын
The "pump drill" works great as long as you understand what direction you need to swing the club. When you set the club parallel to the target line at about hip high, that's the HG point, so if you take the club up from there and then just try to slam the club straight back to that point and beyond in a linear motion, that's the HG swing. The reason the pump drill doesn't help most people is they don't understand what direction to direct their swing or force. They set the pump and then try to swing is sideways, toward the target, instead of downward toward the ground. We've all heard the phrase "swing through the ball," and everyone assumes that means delay the swing until after the ball is struck, but actually the opposite is true. If you swing before or behind the ball then you're swinging or moving the clubhead "through the ball" rather than AT the ball. Because of the length and flexibility of the shaft it takes time between the time we apply force to the handle before it reaches the clubhead ... we call that lag. If you try to apply power to the club at the very second you need it, the power will be late to reach the clubhead and the ball goes right.
@jacobr45583 жыл бұрын
Thanks so much for the reply! This might explain some very specific things for me. One thing I remember when they were talking about a swing analysis with Brooks koepka they said his max speed was actually a little bit before the ball which I found very odd. He must do some sort of version of this? Also another thing that I really appreciate is it definitely feels like it's a lot more leverage on the way down the angle you're talking about makes perfect sense and I almost have figured out that the firm left side really comes into play with this once you start getting a little further through the swing? I also wanted to thank you for the clarification of the right elbow movement with this! It almost feels like the right elbow and the left knee/left hip sort of counterbalance each other through impact?
@HolyGrailOfGolf3 жыл бұрын
@@jacobr4558 As I've said many times in many videos. Every good player does this, whether they know it or not. They figured it out through trial and error somewhere along the line and never truly realized what exactly it was that they were doing but remembered enough to keep doing it. I'm just pointing out what is truly happening in a way that everyone can understand. What I advocate isn't a different than traditional swing it's just a proper way to think about how to do it. People say to me, "I don't see anything different in your swing." Of course not, you can't see my intent.

@HolyGrailOfGolf4 жыл бұрын
You're right. I never really got to the point of the magic. What I'd forgotten to say was the that the right arm transforms from being a lever to being an axis and then back to being a lever again.
@8uvrays4 жыл бұрын
The move as I have seen it explained never goes anywhere specific and it is not even clear what goes down other than the club. When I did it, it started as swinging the clubhead about a foot above and behind the ball. From there I’d gradually moved until it was about five feet behind me an about 2 feet above , behind and inside the spot on the ground. At this point, my drives stabilized at 315 yards, dead straight with a lazy high trajectory. This was in 1973 and I stopped playing golf for years. I fooled around with the idea of pulling my elbows down yesterday and decided it worked best with pulling down with only the trail elbow with a circular backswing that felt like I was shoveling dirt and throwing it over my right shoulder. I did not get the right feel until the 10th hole after a bad drive. I could not aim for the green and anything longer than my 3 rescue seemed in advisable. I ended up hitting the ball about 235 yards and ending two yards left of the green. Executive golf course so skipping to next long hole after a bad drive hit another 3 rescue even better. Next long hole decided I had to swing freely without gathering muscles. 270 yards dead straight. Full disclosure I am 72 and playing at 7,300 feet altitude. I agree that swinging at the ball causes us to become ball bound. I am not sure the reasoning given is correct but I have used this “trick” in other sports and it does work. I called it swinging to a stop because in those sports I swung 90 degrees right to make my arms stop at contact then inched back to create a smooth swing. Never connected it with being ball bound until now.

Is this motion the same for irons? Hope everything works out for you!
@HolyGrailOfGolf Жыл бұрын
Sure. With irons the imaginary ball is a little lower just because of the length of the shaft but the concept is always the same. It's simply how a golf club works. I've recently created a tennis racket in the design of a golf club and that thing is so whacky, looking at it, no one would think they know how to use it, but a golf club, everyone thinks they know how it works and they don't.

You talk about bending the club shaft . Any thoughts about fitting the shaft flex? How important is it?
@HolyGrailOfGolf4 жыл бұрын
Shaft flex is everything! If your shaft flex doesn't fit your swing speed you'll have a very hard time hitting good golf shots. Also, some shafts are just garbage. Example: Years ago, I bought a new Taylormade driver I took it out and played with it. First drive started straight down the fairway then made a hard and fast right turn half way through it's flight. I tried again on the next hole, same thing. One more time ... yep, same thing. I had my old driver so I hit it ... straight and long. We got to a hole with a huge dogleg right 90º about 180 yards to the corner. "I've got the perfect club for this!" Sure enough, that ball went around the corner like it was remote controlled. Anyway, I reshafted it and hit it straight ever since. It's a great club and I still have it today. Also, a friend of mine had a Taylormade club that was impossible to hit straight. We watched slow mo of his swing and the clubhead was twisting almost 90º! If shafts weren't that important Rory wouldn't be paying $3000 for a Rhombach shaft. Not only shaft flex but the weighting of it is also important. If you have club that you just love the way it feels take it to a golf shop and ask them to measure it's swing weight. Then have the rest of your club matched to that weight.

@HolyGrailOfGolf2 жыл бұрын
If you're topping the ball then you're not actually performing the HG swing. You're still attempting to help the ball in the air or your ball is too far forward. Imagine the ball is going go into the ground, not upward. It's like you're trying to mash the ball into the ground but because of the design of the club the ball flies upward. found your video by accident and i whole heartily agree with everything you prescribe, especially the part about firing/straightening the right arm at 7:15, in fact that is literally the only part of you body that is actively moving towards the ball, everything else is trying is actually resisting the movement to the ball to create pressure and lag on the shaft. all poor golfers try to align their body and club head through impact in a linear fashion and they end up with poor dynamics, "impact just happens", its probably the biggest mental hurdle in any sport to over come.

Overhand Golf - As a beginner, my idea of the golf swing was that of a back and forth movement of the hands and club, on the same inclined plane, strait to the ball. It was an over the top, poor shoulder turn, mostly arms golf swing. I knew there was something wrong with this 2D concept, but TV, KZbin and books are 2D media, which makes it harder to understand the 3D nature of the real golf swing. Eventually, I saw through the arms swing illusion, understood that hands and club weren’t on the same plane and presently I’m working to understand this notion of swinging to a point behind the ball. I was often intrigued by the impact position of elite golf players but this solves the puzzle. Thanks again

On my website I reveal all the secrets, well, I wouldn't really call them secrets, it's just that no one knows about them, about how a golf club actually works. It's bewildering to me that many drills and instruction are based on ridiculous and improper beliefs. The golf swing really isn't that complicated once you truly understand how the golf club works. We simply do not actively perform the motions that we desire - we need to learn how to create them through intention and cause and effect rather than active and controlled motions. One of these days I'll figure out how to say that properly. I'm sure there's a word for it. Play well!

Mr G. we are extremely patient and anticipating the release of a video of you striking a couple of balls for us at the range. Or at a trackman at a roger dunn or whatever! I've had great success with this method-- but my hands persist on adding loft at the bottom. I'm probably not punching like you're advocating here. I more than likely slap at it, and I have the tendency to slide my body/hips way past the ball, thus moving the ball about 3-4 inches BACK in my stance because of my sliding hips.

This punching at 7:15 with the right palm is what this video is all about. That should prevent your flip or attempt to hit the ball with flexion of the right wrist. When you first try it you may lose a little distance but it'll come back. Yesterday, I had to start swinging really easy to prevent the ball from going too far! Maybe it was the weather, I don't know ... but a 135 yard 60º wedge is just too damn far!

I have a quick question. In your first couple of videos explaining the Holy Grail swing, when you're hitting the imaginary ball on the same plane as your Club angle you instruct us to hit it basically straight down on that angle. In this video you have the alignment stick somewhat tilted out to 7:15 p.m. should we be hitting the imaginary ball downward and on that particular angle which is basically away from us and somewhat behind us? Thank you for your time I appreciate your insights!
@HolyGrailOfGolf Жыл бұрын
It's the same concept but this one we're talking about the imagined linear path of the clubhead rather than the linear path of the center of the shaft. Also, when I say "straight down" I mean diagonally straight down, not plumb vertical.

Got to watch that Indian food ... nothing worse than a bad experience with "disaster pants". G-Man, This is awesome. I've used the Holy Grail swing over the last several rounds I've played. During the first round, it seemed to work well and I hit the ball great. In my second round I "lost" the feeling and I mishit the ball several times. Starting in my third round I came to the realization that I have to feel like I'm dumping, or to use a better term, releasing, the club down toward the target line to the right of my trail foot (I'm a RH golfer), while having a feeling of looseness in my arms. This has been the key for me to hit the ball consistently well. It's quite remarkable, but, it seems like one has to develop trust that the club will "show up" at the ball even though I'm releasing the club head relatively early in my downswing. Does that make sense? I recently purchased a premium tee shirt and will be making my second donation to your PayPal account anon. I appreciate the work you put into your videos and look forward to more of your output. Regards, Vince Schiavo
@HolyGrailOfGolf3 жыл бұрын
You're right on track! With anything that works, we always try to make it work better and in so doing we break it, but that's part of the learning process. You don't drive your car as fast as it'll go every time you get in it and the same is true with golf. We need to learn that we have a speed that we work best and once you realize that you can stop thinking that farther is always better and start playing smart and scoring low. We have 13 lofted clubs for a reason - they go different distances. You don't have to make a 9 iron go 160 if you've got a 7 or 8 iron that'll do it for you. Although you feel like you're "dumping" the club or energy early you're actually not. It all has to do with the physics of the club and the length of the shaft. It takes time for that energy to reach the clubhead and by feeling like you're dumping in early is exactly what it should feel like. If the club was 6" long you'd be right but it's 4' long and we have to compensate for that length. We all think that because the shaft is so skinny and small that it's insignificant but it's incredibly important and when you learn how to respect it and the time that it requires to deliver the power, you can hit the ball long and straight with what looks like very little effort. There's a reason the shaft is so skinny and as flexible as it is ... that's what works best and incredibly well. I once bought a club with a thick, non-tapered shaft just to see how it worked and was amazed at how badly it performed. I made that into my baseball bat/club that you've probably seen in a video or two. BTW this is a great subject for a new video, so, thank you. Don't get discouraged. You'll always get better, and then worse, at least in your opinion, and then better again without realizing it. It's all about expectations and controlling the trill of learning something new. If you think more about fairways and greens than distance you'll have a scorecard that you're not impressed with but will most likely win you some good money. One final thought, don't ever think about your final score while you're playing. If you've made a few birdies try to make a few more not protect what you've already done. You control the score not the other way around. Just play and what happens, happens. I played recently and made 6 birdies and I said I want 7. My ball hit a tiny rock and didn't go in for 7 but I wasn't trying to protect any score because it didn't matter. Go low and don't think about it! Add'em up when you're done. If anything, imagine you're playing 27 holes. Ok, the reason I say this is that being aware of a good score sucks. I once shot -5 for 9 holes in a tournament and my playing partner said, "OMG you just shot 5 under on the front!" ... so what did I do?... +5 on the back ... I knew I had the tournament won and started playing to protect my score.
