I also did this course with my oldest daughter and thought it was excellent. I would say I HIGHLY recommend the safety unit! I did that the beginning of the year and the second to the last chapter was safety. I had talked to all four kids about this but the way they worked it and the examples they gave were hard but good. They explained that even though someone is family or a good friend that sometime they are the ones who take advantage. It gave examples like grandfather, uncle, cousin etc. I hesitated to give those examples because I didn’t want my kids to think they would do that. No history of any abuse in the family. Sigh... without going into detail it was during this lesson my youngest exposed abuse from a cousin 💔 Turns out he had abused my three plus other cousins and none of them knew others were being abused and non told their parents. I am forever THANKFUL that I followed the curriculum and used the examples given!! It STOPPED the abuse. I’m sure anyone reading this might be wondering so I’ll share that even though it was close family, we reported and said cousin has been sitting in jail for six months awaiting sentencing and is facing 20 plus years in jail. Talk to your kids!!! Our world is scary. This was in a Christian family, even the perpetrator was home schooled. It’s important to have hard conversations and sexual conversations but so important. Do it with prayer and help from the Holy Spirit.

Yes, I agree its hard, but if a child doesn't know that grown ups can do the wrong thing then a child can be caught up in a manipulative situation very quickly and its usually with a trusted adult. I was a victim in this kind of situation and yes also when I was 4 years old when I stayed the night at a cousin's house and guess what it was a girl cousin. If young girls aren't told the hard things and that they have the right to tell grown ups no then it can put them in a rock and a hard place. I'm very very sadden that this happened to your family!! Its so hard for kids to speak out especially when they are scared and confused. This is one of my reason for the no sleep over rule. Then there is no risk of my children being in a situation they can't get out of!! Of course I also started conversation with my kids much earlier in their lives about who can see them in the rest room, bath, ect and how no one is allowed to touch you, this is your body and yours alone, ect. The type of people who do this to young people have a way of making the victim think it was their idea and what they wanted. Thanks for sharing praying for your family. God can and will heal them. I have a very healthy happy sexual relationship with my husband of 18 years, but it did take a lot of time to realize it wasn't my fault and to forgive myself.

My heart breaks for all involved. Sex abuse between children is actually very high. The easy access to internet porn has made everything worse. May grace find your family as you navigate this tough road. Thank you for sharing! Your testimony alone makes me want this curriculum now!

Wow!!! Yes, so important to teach our kids about inappropriate touch and sexual abuse and when it’s done, it is often done by people we know. Glad the children spoke up and it stopped. Sorry your family had to go through that. This stuff happens way more than we think.

Great review. We did not use this study to share about sex and body changes with our children, but we did use another christian based curriculum. For those who are nervous about sharing with their kids, I noticed the number one thing that helped me was to not let myself act nervous, embarrassed, or silly as I was talking. Believe me, I was not looking forward to breaking the tape here. I had heard stories that even home schooled kids were learning about sex at young ages. So I wanted to share with my 10 year old, as she was clearly moving into the next stages of development. I sucked it up, acted calm, and it went really well. I was pleasantly surprised to learn that she had no idea what sex was. But she handled the conversation maturely, and like Ashlee mentioned above, once the conversation was over, that was pretty much it. I may have gotten a question or two since then, but nothing shocking. So mamas and dads out there, it really isn't all that bad! It's so important that we are the first ones to share the true and beautiful reason for what sex is.
@sharayahsunshine114 жыл бұрын
Thanks for sharing as I remember this conversation being extremely awkward for my parents when I was growing up. I remember very vividly before "the talk" I was in 3rd grade and a girl told me what oral sex was. Here I am 9 years old going home and repeating this story and my mother shut down the conversation. So I'm determined to never let it be the same with my kids.

I was aware of all the things as a kiddo. I wasn’t a question asker, but I was a great eavesdropper, apparently!! 🤣🤣🤣 I grew up in a house with my mom and 2 older sisters. I NEVER asked questions and any time my mom would try to talk about periods or sex, my reaction was I already know and I don’t want to discuss. My home is very different. My kids are growing up in a family with very modest parents. We are willing to answer questions, and have already discussed birds and bees with my then 8 year old son because I had a surprise pregnancy at that point. My younger (almost 9) girls have asked not one thing. My concern for them is that they won’t have any prep when their bodies start changing. They aren’t even aware of periods yet because we don’t share a bathroom and I am private. I was thinking we would do this unit together for science (though i am dreading it, lol) as a way to prep them for what is coming and open the conversation about puberty, etc. I’m still not sure if this is the right way to go there and if it is still too early since they are not questioning things. My son, now 11, would probably find it interesting. He has no problem with asking questions and learning and isn’t embarrassed whatsoever. So hard to know how to address it and when!

I think about talking about SEX is SO IMPORTANT!!! I personally feel incredibly AWKWARD with delivering sex from a book (as I was taught about sex that way as a kid). I agree, and have talked openly about sex with my children since they were preschool age (in appropriate ways, changing as they grow), and have always used anatomically correct terms. It is SO important that sex is a natural, ongoing conversation. BUT I wanted to add that even still, I found the unit extremely helpful. It helped to formalize the science of the topic. It also reminded me to cover things that I hadn't in my natural conversations.

Yes, we talked about pornography when my boys were 5 and 7 and started out slow women on the cover of magazines with to much boobs showing is pornography to my kids and as they get older and ask more see more notice more we add to their knowledge. I will even point out women as we are out and about if they aren't covered well enough and say that's not how godly women should dress or her short are too short ect. And now my kids are 11 and 9 and they are quick to let me know if they see bad magazines or they have to inspect my short before I'm allowed to where them.

Robert, I agreed with the whole unit, except for that one part. When we discussed it with my son, we just explained what it was and how we felt about it, the science behind it. Not all Christians believe it is a sin. So, like Ashlee said, you can do a little rearranging when necessary when it comes to personal beliefs/comfort. This was the only part of the curriculum we decided to “change”. It’s very well done and thorough.

Awesome! So glad it went well! The unit sounds great and laid out very well. I'm with you on the skipping parts to prevent curiosity. I know this might be a strange question, but did it touch on homosexuality? If so how did it go about it? I know from a christian view...I don't know how to word this... its just so prevalent and some what pushed in the next generation and it's probably in my opinion the hardest part of all this to talk about, so I'm curious to know how they present it if at all. Sorry if this is to heavy of a question. Its just something my kids are noticing as we go out and about and of course they ask questions. I'm confident in my own opinion and faith on the subject, but sometimes finding the right words are hard. This was a great review thanks so much for sharing!!

Great question! I tell my children that we can never make fun of them, we should stand up and defend them if they are getting picked on,and that God’s whole truth hasn’t penetrated their hearts yet, so we should show them love and kindness just like we do everyone else. I also say never argue with them about it being right or wrong, because again there are truths that take time to accept.
