When you buy a used Tesla, the first thing you need to do is prove to Tesla you are the owner of the vehicle, this may take a couple of days. Send them copies of sale and registration. This will make the Tesla app work. Then pay for connectivity subscription or use your phone.

Yup. Good point and I forgot to mention I requested that Tesla add my new ride to my Tesla account the day I bought the car while I was still in CT. Good news was that Tesla was super quick to add the car to my account. However, afterwards my car was still disconnected to the cell network and had no signal.

Tesla will tell you the build info if you call them with the dealer & say that they are not gonna make the sale otherwise, but it’s a total pain in the ass, & it has to be a location with a service center and then you go thru service center not sales, they can be resistant but ultimately will tell you if you persist & involve dealership…

Dave, when I’m bought my BMW i3 it was from a third party dealer, and they just really didn’t understand what they were selling. They kept listing it on the paperwork as a hybrid because of the onboard range extender. Thanks for answering a lot of questions for those of us who have considered the purchase of a Tesla from a non Tesla dealership.

About a week ago someone was complaining they purchased a used P60 that was badged as a P85. Tesla needs to allow 3rd parties to easily verify the original specs to help prevent fraud in the used car market.

Great video Dave. This mirrors my experience buying a pre-loved Leaf 4.5 years ago from a Nissan dealer. It was in the middle of winter which adds to the complications. Once the car was home, the next day it would not turn on. The 12V battery was dead. Dealership had the car towed and replaced the battery. It took a couple of days to arrange a pickup time and I had asked to please have the car charged since it was super cold and range was going to be an issue getting it home. That didn’t happen. The car was buried under 4 inches of snow with a nice coating of ice beneath it. Battery was below 50% and heading lower as I scraped the ice and snow from the windows. Dealership only had a level 2 charger. Thanks to having PlugShare already on my phone I navigated to closest DC charger.

I wondered how you remembered all the information but then saw your notes. You have an amazing ability to drive and talk about your Tesla experience. You are the first to explain what you need to know about buying a used Tesla. I loved them giving you an English Tesla cable. The most important info was the build statement of the Tesla. I did not know such a thing existed and I hope now that you are the owner Tesla will give you the build sheet. I also hope you can get the new MCU2. i assume that Tesla will be charging you for the change out. Telling your wife to check the lights, turn signals, break lights and door handles was genius. It was very enjoyable to see all the places you frequent in you trip with the Tesla. Your talk was easy to understand and it was as if I was sitting next to you. Thank you Dave.

Hey Dave, nice chatting at the Fayetteville SC last week ( guy with the roof box). I have noticed that even used cars from Tesla don't have personal data erased. All previous used Teslas I've bought have home address, searched addresses, and even previously connected cell phones. Tesla says they reset to factory and erase personal data, but that has not been the case 4 previous times for me.

Dave you’re expecting an Infiniti dealership to be an expert on Teslas? I bet you they’re not even experts on the cars from Infiniti. I think it’s a buyer beware situation if you buy a Tesla from a non-Tesla dealership. You’re lucky because you actually know what things are supposed to be. Imagine someone totally brand new to Tesla‘s buying this car. They’d be clueless.

My first EV was the 2014 Mercedes Benz B-class Electric Drive that I bought used from a 3rd party dealer in Northern Virginia. The day before I drove down to get it I told them on the phone to PLUG IT IN. It was a level 2 only EV and had a 110v AC charger that came with it. They said sure no problem we'll plug it in. I got there the next day, did the paperwork got the keys to the car. Hopped in and it had 23 miles of range out of the EPA rated 85 miles. I asked them and they said "yep we plugged it in for a few hours yesterday and then unplugged it when we left for the night".. so that was like 9 miles of charge added at most. Luckily I was able to make it to a nearby hotel that had some nice Clipper Creek Level 2 chargers. I arrived with 5 miles of range left. Glad I had brought my backpack with my laptop so I had something to do while waiting for it to charge.

Dave, after 4 years of owning my loaded 2018 Tesla Model S 75D with FSD, I just traded it in for a beautiful new 2023 Genesis GV60 Performance for so many reasons! I had enough with Tesla's FSD and feature upgrade "promises" and decided to trade it (while trade-ins $$ are still high) for what is arguably the most sophisticated, technologically advanced, feature rich and luxurious EV on the market today- the updated 2023 version E-GMP platform Genesis GV60 Performance. (In fact I think it's a bargain compared to everything that's in it to what I paid for my "loaded" Tesla...). First off, my 2018 Model S was made in August 2018, so it came with the latest version 2.0 MCU and version 2.5 Autopilot computer, which Tesla upgraded last year, free of charge, with the newest Tesla made version 3.0 Autopilot computer because I had purchased FSD with the car. However after waiting over a year and until I traded it in, I was still never "allowed" by Tesla to download and install the latest FSD Autopilot "Beta" software to take advantage of that new 3.0 AP computer and all the neural and AI FSD technology in the Beta FSD software. It really pissed me off that after 4 years owning the car I never got the rest of Full Self Driving (FSD) that I PAID for! Next, my Tesla was supposed to receive software updates like Blind Spot Detection and Blind Spot Monitor (BSD and BSM). When that upgrade finally came 2 years ago it DIDN'T work. I could turn it ON in the settings screen BUT other than showing crude visualizations of a vehicle turning red on my dash screen, if I crossed into the path of that vehicle in an adjacent lane, my car also would NOT even audibly sound a warning tone like the simplest of BSD systems on the cheapest cars nor would my center screen show the actual video monitor of the right or left Blind Spot activated when using my turn signal like it was supposed to (which I believe does work properly on newer Tesla Model 3 and Model Y vehicles that also got the software update). My Tesla had all the cameras and hardware so "What The Hell!" Tesla? Lots of Genesis (and Hyundai/Kia and other brand) vehicles have FULL BSD warning lights in the side mirrors, warning sounds, etc. My new GV60 even has visual warnings in the Heads Up Display (HUD) and a full video BSM monitor of the right or left Blind Spot when a turn signal is activated. AND if I'm in immediate danger of a collision, the GV60 will even brake and nudge you away back into your own lane! Add to this the multitude of other safety technology and convenience features like Birds Eye 360 degree video monitor, Rear Cross Traffic Monitor and Braking and many others that my Tesla will never get as well as features like Apple Car Play and Android Auto et al. Lastly I had a 4 year ongoing and nagging Sirius XM problem with my Tesla (since new) that was never corrected, even after numerous service complaints. While the SiriusXM did work and displayed the right channel playing, the graphics for the tuned channel were mostly NOT correct, showing graphics for another channel! To add insult to injury the cover art for the song playing would also not display correctly, if it showed at all (blank). All this information updates real time in the satellite "downstream" and the infotainment software should display it. I've NEVER seen this in the multiple vehicles I have owned or driven over the almost 20 years satellite radio has been available. Another words, it has ALWAYS worked correctly on any other SiriusXM radio I've used EXCEPT not in my $100K Tesla and Tesla had no answers why! The last serious problem I was having with my Tesla Model S was the increasingly longer charging times I was experiencing while using Tesla's Superchargers. Over the last 4 years my Tesla has apparently "slowed down" while charging on Superchargers. It's been rumored Tesla has purposely slowed down fast charging on software updates on older Teslas due to possible fire concerns. It is now taking almost 45-60+ minutes to "fast charge" my Tesla from 20% to 80%. The Hyundai designed E-GMP platform in the new Genesis GV60 has the newest 800V electrical architecture, like that found in Porsche and Audi, which compared to the ~380V/400V architecture of Tesla (and mostly every other EV brand) it offers more than TWICE the charging speed when connected to the fastest 350KW Electrify America chargers. In fact when I fast charged my GV60 the first time, I charged from 30% to 80% in just 16 minutes flat! So Dave, to end this lengthy comment, let me just say I do love the classic and stately design and EV performance of my 2018 Tesla Model S 75D but unfortunately Tesla has not kept it's promised FSD upgrade to me (and that I paid for!) nor has Tesla upgraded the other safety and technology features on the "S" as they claimed and that's now available on so many other lesser vehicles...it was time to move on to a newer EV company promising the latest cutting edge technology and best features which happens to be Hyundai! If I were to make a spreadsheet showing a side by side feature and technology comparison between my previous Model S and my new Genesis GV60, the list on the GV60 side would be 2-3 times longer. I think you could appreciate my thoughts since you now own both also :)

Hi Dave! You are absolutely right A dealer who does not put customer service as the most important signal, - consciously or unconsciously - that he does not care - at least about the customer. Not being able to delete the previous owner's information is downright unforgivable. Perhaps you can say it is the owner's own responsibility, and yes - maybe it is; but the dealer should at least check - nothing to argue about!!! I myself have 40 years "behind the counter" and for me customer service has always been important. I will go to great lengths to satisfy a customer - within reason. But it is not only Tesla that stores information in the Infotainment system. Many modern cars do this - and therefore it is unforgivable that the dealer does not check / make sure to delete the previous owner's data. This suggests that you do not have a fixed procedure you use - possibly with a checklist. Everything I get done on my own car is done based on a checklist that the mechanic or sales person or whoever it is fills out. As a customer, I get a copy so I can see what has been done - that's how it should be, if you ask me. In that way, it may be used as a reference if anything should happen to what have been worked on, and something is wrong or has happened.

Big fan of Tesla but the last thing I want to worry about when I buy a used car is if the door handles will continue to work. Although I know they are electronically actuated, I'm happy that the model 3 and Y went to somewhat manual door mechanisms.

I also bought a 2017 100D remotely, about the same mileage as yours, but with FSD. We did several video walk throughs and I had them check off every item on the list; from video to pictures of every screen, upgrades, etc. The salesperson was incredibly accommodating, the 3rd party dealership in Jersey was a catastrophic disappointment. The individual sales person saved the day for them. Overall, I flew out, picked it up and drove back to MN. First order of business was to upgrade to MCU2. Overall, owning the car made the length of the process to ownership worth it. Also, I paid $58k before tax, title, fees, etc. Also, I talked with the very helpful local Tesla staff. Tesla HQ, when called, was less than accommodating. The local Tesla staff gave me a ton of pointers, hints, and tips.

My first Tesla model S 2016 (I don’t have it anymore) I purchased from a third party dealership. The previous owner was still logged in just like with what you said. It’s Friday night going into the weekend so no way to contact tesla for assistance. Dealership wasn’t helpful. Luckily there was old paperwork in the glove box from the previous owner. Found a phone number and texted him for assistance transferring the ownership. He took care of the transfer for me thank goodness. It was ridiculous that the dealership didn’t handle that. My current tesla model S 2018 which is identical to yours except with black seats 😉, I purchased directly from Tesla.

If you tap the car at the bottom left corner and touch "Software" it will tell you if it has FSD or not, version of software, etc. No connectivity, standard, or premium. Basically everything you want to know.

Traditional Auto Dealerships hate Tesla and the cars, They will take them in on trade and resell if they can make some $ but they have no interest in learning about the cars and certainly not doing any service. I have a Model Y (leased) which was my original Cybertruck placeholder vehicle that I'm returning in June. Being tall, I decided to buy a used Model X and got a 2018 100D with 49K miles from Tesla. It like all Tesla used cars came with a 1 year warranty, virtually all options including FSD and was $42K OTD. That vehicle with the same configuration sold new for $150K and it more than meets my current needs. When I was younger (and poorer) I drove a lot and purchased mostly slightly used vehicles. It was a good strategy then and still is today. The EV market will mature with many more options but it will take something extraordinary to get me to buy anything other than a Tesla.

Love my 2014 model s 60. 130k miles on it charges to 203 still (factory was 208 in 2014). Free supercharging for life out weighs occasional door handle or window regulator, tires etc you may have to replace

See if the previous owner had TeslaFi or similar app on the car from birth. Try to compare % of the time was DC fast charging vs AC. If AC is predominant, that’s a good sign for health. The lower the mileage the better as well. Hope this helps and good luck! If you can swing a log range plus or a refresh financially, you won’t be disappointed

@@kacatley9258 Hi, I would say my experience has been mixed. But its not cos its a 2018, it's just the car I ended up buying. Firstly, Elon announced the price drop 2 months after I bought mine which could've easily saved me 10-15k. Secondly, within the first 6 months I had to replace the 12v and the main battery pack. Luckily, both were covered under the Basic Limited Warranty which is 4 years or under 50k miles. Even though I had the dealership do a Recurrent EV OTA (Over The Air) test which gave a clean chit to the car, it went dead, but when I contacted Tesla, they had a towing company come out and get the car and then replaced the battery pack and the 12v for free (I had to pay for the towing though). I've a friend who bought a 2022 long range and except for the screen I think the 2018 is literally the same. However, I would recommend if budget allows to go for a car that gives you the basic vehicle warranty for at least a year or two that way you can rely on Tesla with any issues while you're still learning and getting used to the car. And even if it didnt work in my case, get tests like Recurrent or Tesla Service Center checks, before you pull the trigger. Good Luck!

It’s not just Tesla, my brand new 2018 VW Scirrocco R had out of date sat Nav software which I eventually purchased and claimed back, furthermore the tyres were delivery spec 60 psi and as it had differential tyre monitoring, I didn’t spot the issue until I got a puncture and the tyre pressures were reset all around to 36. I claimed premature tyre wear costs also.

Another reason why the dealership model is dying. If they dealership middleman isn’t doing due diligence updating software and checking the charge cable then what purpose do they serve? You had to resolve the issues yourself so essentially they got a cut off your money for doing nothing.

I test drove a 2016 Model X 75D this weekend. I had rented a 2023 Model 3 and liked it. I wanted to see if a Model X would fit my 6'4" frame better. It did, but the car was so antiquated. I knew there would be no CarPlay (I still can't understand this oversight.) but the lane change cameras didn't exist, there were no cars around me on the screen, and the range was only 200 miles. Lame. I'm surprised you didn't hit an alligator.

Great videos, Dave. Super ones on the Genesis. I had a Model S loaner of the same vintage when my new Model Y's power steering died. Fortunate it was at a McDonald's drive up and not on a remote curvy road or roaring down the Interstate. I loved the Model S air suspension! Really wish my Y had it. And, like you, I really liked the quality and appearance of the S. My biggest disappointment was no "hold" on regenerative braking. The car would keep coasting until I hit the brake. And it would coast backwards on an incline. On some vintage Model Ss you can enable "hold" by pressing twice on the brake. Didn't work on my loaner. There were a few other malfunctions, but since it was a loaner I was glad to have it. Strangely I didn't like going back to all the buttons, knobs and switches. The Y is my second Tesla and I'm used to the screen and voice control. Trying to figure out how to enable Autopilot on the 60 mile drive home from the dealership was frustrating. Simple when you know you are looking for another lever. Since I have mobility issues the Y works better for me than my previous Model 3. I'm wondering how high the seats are in your new Genesis?

You could have bought it from tesla and paid thousands more. This advice goes for any used car. Do you think a Ford dealer selling a traded in Mercedes knows the car? They don't. They just want to get out of the lot and therefore well price it well. I've now but 40k miles on my 2018 100D and I love it.

Looks like u know this Dave from the shot in the video. but for others simply have dealer go to app, or look at the "Additional Vehicle Information" link from software screen for key build highlights and warranty date info. Connectivity snafu sounds sorta like a 3G obsolescence sort of deal? 3G went offline back in like 1Q '22. Wonder if the V11 update u did popped it over to 4G and nixed 3G....

I enjoy your videos. I’m curious if after driving the fully spec’ed Ioniq if you miss features like the top view 360 camera, Apple CarPlay, or rear cross-traffic alerts. Lack of these keeps me out of Teslas. It is very impressive, though, that you can upgrade the MCU in a 2018. Well done there, Tesla!

Besides wiper blades, air filter, detailing, and tires, you really cannot expect much, especially as Tesla does not support that channel. At all. Introducing the hotspot was brilliant.

In all fairness to the dealer, it sounds like they had probably never sold a Tesla before. I'm sure used Teslas are rare at that dealer. Ask about Toyota settings and they can handle it no problem.

I mostly like your content, but this is mainly your fault. You should have gone in person to address this instead of doing it all 100% online and through calls. Plus, sending your wife into a situation she shouldn't have been in was not appropriate. It would be nice if you would also take responsibility. You sound seriously overly dramatic.

@@dconner9 I mean the weird combo of options as Tesla was transitioning between AP versions / MCU versions, no premium interior since it was before that was made standard, etc. It was a pre-Model 3 car since that was when Tesla dramatically streamlined the Model S and Model X options.

You complain about Tesla not giving you the build sheet and info about the car but as an owner why would you want Tesla to give out info about your car to randoms who call including the dealer if you haven’t informed Tesla that you sold your car to said people. The first owner did not transfer owners ship with them so as far as Tesla is concerned he is still the owner and neither you or the dealer should be able to call to get info about the vehicle

I get your point. But as a consumer, I would like to know what I am buying and what the original selling price was. Most cars have the window sticker to answer this question. Monroney labels are just not part of the Tesla DNA. I don’t need to know the owner history, but it would be nice to see what features the car had before committing to buying it. That’s all I was trying to say
