Thanks for the great explanation, Mr. King. When I joined the live stream of the event around move 20 I didn't understand why the commentating GMs were sure that white is much better.

It's always the case when carlsen plays nakamura. Carlsen shows patience and naka forces matters. Sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't

Thank you. It really helped me understand where Nakamura went wrong. He changed from securing a draw to going for a win, without enough time to calculate. Was Nakamura running low on time as he had to react to Carlsen? Whereas Carlsen had the luxury of pre-move, and creating time pressure on Nakamura?

Danny: For once, I disagree with your assessment. Stockfish gives the thumbnail position as dead level, which is no surprise given the equal material and relatively symmetrical position. Indeed, Black controls the only open file. As for the Black bishop, it isn't bad at all. True, the pawn on d4 slightly limits its mobility, but that doesn't make it "bad". Further, Black's pawn on d4 controls the key squares of c3 and e3. Possibly, your assessment of the position was based on the game's eventual outcome rather than its objective merits.

@Jos Any run of the mill club player can see the position is very equal.

Yes, engines assess the position is equal. I pointed out in the video how right until near the end Nakamura could still have drawn the game. But I believe you are under-estimating how difficult it is to defend this position, and that is a human factor. In fact, I think Naka did very well just to reach the simplified position with 3 pawns versus three pawns without allowing a trick, especially given the time control. This is a classic good knight versus bad bishop position where the knight hops around irritatingly on secure squares (c4 and e4) and that is very hard for Black to control.

@@PowerPlayChess I hate to be argumentative, but isn't there a contradiction between saying a position is dead level and saying it's hard to defend? Especially in a rather simplified, symmetrical position.

@@Straight_Talk I didn't say the position was 'dead level' which implies that there is nothing going on. I said that engines assess the position as equal. And there is no contradiction in also saying that it is harder for one side to play than the other.

@@PowerPlayChess Sounds like semantics to me. If a position is equal, it should be roughly equally easy/difficult for each side to play, where the position is quiet, symmetrical, with equal material (as is the case here). It must be the lockdown. Not much to do, so looking for petty arguments!
