This is why I punish my players for being horny in my Pathfinder games. One of my campaigns happened to have a brothel in that world, but I deliberately set it up so nothing good comes from it, including fantasy AIDS making healing spells weaker and possibly fail. There was a dark backstory and side quest there involving a trafficking ring with an illusionary spell to disguise children as halfling or dwarves. The relevation of this would cause a manhunt against everyone that willingly worked it or was a patron. Basically would result in a drawn-out glorided TPK by execution if the whole party was horny and tenacious enough to resist arrest. This wouldn't kill the campaign though, the whole thing was revolved around adventurers building reputation arround completing smaller quests on an island nation to get noticed and hired as private sector contract worker for the island government to kill a kraken with a massive bounty on its head disrupting trade with the mainland. The continent was also at war, so they couldn't be bothered to spend resources in the opposite direction. No exp, leveling up was done on quest completion, because the level was also how well know they were with their actions. So if there was an unfortunate TPK or something, they can just roll a new party at 2 levels lower. Since the campaign was centered around a kraken bounty, it didn't matter if everyone died because hundreds of desperate adventures are after the same thing. Fry that fish, collect the life-changiny bounty, re-open trade with the mainland, and get off what essentially became a free range prison.

I was mulling it over and the issue with having every option available to every character is that you start having to use more time to achieve the same level of depth. This results in the developers simply taking the lazy choice and giving everyone the same romance with a specific character. To use two examples from Bioware (when they were great). Jade Empire and Dragon Age Origins. Dragon Age Origins: Alistair is a romance option for female characters alone. At one point, after you get his opinion high enough, he will give your character a rose. Saying it "reminded him of you" and "found it incredible, something so gentle and beautiful could survive on the battlefield." The quotes dont quite work with a guy with higher strength and wearing heavier armor then Alistair himself. With Jade Empire the best possible ending is only avaiable to male characters. After prying into Sagacious Tien enough it becomes revealed that Dawnstar has a claim to the throne because she was named after an event that takes place before the plot. It also takes convincing her to take the throne as well near the end of the game. This cant happen if shes simply not going to have heirs because shes a long wall or embankment designed to prevent flooding. You can't make everyone happy. If you try, you will only produce tripe that appeals to the lowest common denominator and only leave tasteless idiots satisfied.

On your last point: the sad truth is that the lowest common denominators/tasteless idiots make up the majority of humanity. Not sarcasm; the majority (the _vast_ majority) of humanity are low-brow, small-minded, short-sighted, egotistical, hedonistic midwits (at best). It is the small minority of higher-calibre remainders that basically hold up all of society and maintain higher standards than all the rest; they are the ones that create and evolve - all the rest consume, stagnate and destroy. Most of humanity is worthless. And the key problem is that companies, in a bid to make as much money as possible, will attempt to appeal to the lowest common denominators out of the simple fact that there are more of them - far, far more - than there are people with credibility, principals and taste. It's about greed. Does it often work? Absolutely not. But when it does, it's like hitting the jackpot. And that's why all companies, once they inevitably become greedy and entitled enough, will seek to hit that jackpot or die trying. Pure greed, as by catering to the bottom-feeders of humanity, whom are the vast majority. More consumers = higher chances of a big pay-out. That's literally all there is to it. And for the rest? The people with credibility, principals and taste? We can all pound sand, apparently. They don't need (nor want) us anymore. You can bet your bottom dollar that this windfall of success BG3 and Larian have seen _will_ only cause them to triple-down for any future games. This is an omen of things to come. They've hit their absolute peak and will soon stall, before going into a tail-spin (but not before jumping from the plane with golden parachutes, of course). BG3 is, undoubtedly, their last reasonably good game. It's all downhill from here.

One of the better examples of selective npc romance was dragon age inquisition. For all that games faults it nailed the romances with characters not only having sexual preferences, but racial ones as well. Except for iron bull, that guy was a complete degenerate and the qunari from the first game would have staked him out in the desert, flawed the skin from his back, and left him for the carrion.

That's the problem with "choice" in games, in general. The more freedom you give players, the shallower everything is. Like, you have control over Geralt in the Witcher, but you're still playing Geralt; he has a certain character, certain skills, certain outlook, and so your choices are relatively restricted. Or Shepard from Mass Effect; there was paragon and renegade Shep, and that was it--basically two versions of the character, and most everything fit into those. I understand why some people don't want a 100% scripted experience in a game, I get it, but the further you get away from that, the more shallow and simple things become. I personally think the best is that middle ground; have a character who is relatively defined, but allow specific choices to be made, like being more pragmatic or more idealistic.

4:57 I've been saying for years that the purpose of a silent protagonist is not for immersion, but for variety. A silent protagonist in these games allows for a greater variety of dialogue choices to be available because the cost of voicing them isn't there. Baldur's gate and Vampire Bloodlines are the only two games I know of that take proper advantage of the fact that your character doesn't say anything, so technically they can say everything. So yeah, fuck the people saying that a silent protag is a bad idea, it's perfect for RPGS

There are like 4 companions that are horny and all of them have reasons that make sense. Gale literally was fucking the goddess of all magic. He's a fuck boy. Karlach couldn't even be physically touched for like a year. Astarion is initially horny and then realizes that being raped for 200 years has messed with his idea of sexuality. Laezel is a gythanki and sex for them is purely for primal pleasure and it doesn't even lead to pregnancy as we know it. Also literally all of these characters grow and change throughout the game. Laezel starts to understand monogamy and mutual feelings over carnal desire. Astarion doesn't want to be a sex toy and even avoids it eventually. Gale basically just wants companionship he's been alone for years dealing with his hubris. That's 4 of 10 companions.

Romance mechanics are great. The problem is that Larian totally failed on every possible level when it comes to make theirs. First of all the player should ALWAYS (with some rare exception) be the one engaging the romance. YOU should be the one that make the move to get that ass, not the other way around. Then there is the fact that romance should take time to archive. You should work your way up to it and make the right moves to get in your target good grace, something that is somehow totally absent from BG3. Every character will try to bang you as long as talk to them a couple of times. Then there is the obvious case of "let's pretend heteronormativy is a made up concept" which I don't think I even need to explain why it's bad. And lat but not least, they forgot that the default state of a relationship with a companion should be that small thing we call "friendship", or "platonic relationship". FOR SOME REASONS the blue haired weirdos in charge of Larian romances totally forgot that being good friend with people is something people do, especially with characters they do like and enjoy the company of. Instead they thought the only choices you have is kicking them in the nutts when they try to shove them in your face or just suck it up (both literally and figuratively). It's pretty insane to see how awful on every level the romance writing has been in that game, it's so bad that I feel like we need to find the name of the people in charge of that debacle and make sure Larian get rid of them, because just as sure as a bad apple will spoil the whole basket, an awful farleft weirdo will destroy your company and I'll be pretty sad to see this company die (or worst, get completely corrupted like so many others before them).

Skyrim used marriage as a bare-bones life simulation feature, and the only other one I can tolerate is Dragon's Dogma because it's so hilariously bad I can't help but laugh. what really grinds my gears is that in d&d there is no justification for trans anything to exist. there is magic to permanently turn you into the opposite sex if you wish to do so. hell, elminster aumar the primary wizard of the forgotten realms setting spent multiple years as a woman named elmara. everybody would look for a mage suitably powerful and the spell components to get polymorphed. nobody would even think about travelling the road to nowhere and getting stuck on it! the first baldur's gate had the cursed girdle of masculinity/feminity. an item that you could reach within the first 2 to 3 hours of gameplay.

I only played Act 1. It definitely appears they are catering to that weird guy at the table who used DnD to fulfill his weird pr0n induced fantasies with all of the weird things they included... BG3 started off as strong as BG2 did, but it definitely tripped at the end. BG2 is still the superior Baldur's Gate. If BG2 was given the modern visual and combat treatment it would far outshine BG3. The NPC companions were far superior and their romances deep and varied among them. The side areas and quest were much more interesting and felt more important. There was little to no storyless side content. Everywhere had something goin on. And the main character was actually someone so significant, the entire plot of BG3 literally revolves around them. In BG1 and 2 YOU are the king on the board, the thing every baddie wants to be and wants to exploit for what you have. The story forms around you, not the events of others. Too bad wotc completed neutered the character and the best romance companion in BG in books. So many better ways to make it canon. Oh well me and my true love Viconia have our own ending. Fucking WoTC.

I wish the devs put as much into friendships as into romances, though, as I think it's easier to miss stuff with him if not in a romance. Spoiler below One player uploaded from a playthrough where they let Astarion face his master without their input and he chose not to Ascend and freed the spawn, giving the Gur a speech about how they deserve the same chance he's had. Others had to intervene to stop him from Ascending and had it go horribly. It's interesting how much the player can influence him if they take their time to get to know him and encourage him to be a better person.

@ZoomerStasi D&D 5e - Healing Word, heals 1d4 + spell Mod. Cure Wounds, 1d8 + spell mod. One extra die per spell level consumed. Potion of Healing 2d4+4, Greater 4d4+4, Superior 8d4+8, Supreme 10d4+20. My point being, he's correct; 5e healing IS low. It's usually quite manageable if you have items or features to boost it (i,e Life domain) but generally speaking, healing in 5e is something that's typically fairly weak and you're better off beefing up your AC or not letting enemies get close enough to attack, if you can. There's only 1 potent healing spell - Heal (70 hit points, flat) which is a 6th level slot so you don't even get it until you're level 9 in a spellcasting class that learns it. Similarly, Fireball does rather high damage for its level and only has a few rivals which are more situational. It can go poorly with a low dice roll but typically Fireball is very potent.

Playersexual is the worst form of sexual orientation for npc's. I think rpgs should completely barr och heavily limit romance options depending on race and gender choices. Limiting , you say? Why should Shadowheart find my half-orc barbarian attractive at all? There should be a unique option of a deep friendship that might not me as tittilating but still rewarding fore a role-palying point of view. But I'll settle for just not making every character horny for my MC. I still remember Mass Effect 3 where Kaidan all of a sudden wanted me to go balls deep and I was sitting there stunned asking myself when the hell he joined the Village People.

Gale's entire plotline can be boiled down to the feminist idea that men are intimidated by and feel inadequate around "strong women." But that's the entire aspect of the writing in this game. I just dislike BG3 because of how absolutely disrespectful the devs were to the original games. They clearly just wanted to make a D&D game and jumped on a popular old D&D series. The fact that the writers didn’t even play through the original games is incredibly evident. The way they retconned the main villain from the first game to be the absolute opposite of how he was in the other games is particularly insulting. They really couldn’t even be bothered to read a wiki summary of his character traits and motivations, and somehow ended up with a character that literally couldn’t be further from how he was in those games. It would be like a new author writing Harry Potter 8, and Voldemort shows up, but when he does, Ron goes on about how Voldemort was always a mindless Dumbledore fanatic that was his greatest ally and dedicated his life to serving him. That is as oblivious and disrespectful this game is to the originals.

I think what's always rankled me with a lot of RPGs, particularly recent ones, is that there's no real bro-tier friendship options for any of the main party members. A lot of the time, it's either bone-zone or no-zone. There's no middle ground at all. What if I liked Ghale but didn't want to ruin his arsehole? Where's my option to just go on an awesome bender and conduct a drunken heist for magical artefacts and have a grand old time? What if I want to raise all kinds of hell with Astarion but don't want to wake up the next morn in Sodomy Ave? Why can't I go on a wee murder spree with Lae'zel in the countryside and just laugh about it without tearing our clothes off like all that blood we've coated ourselves in was full of aphrodisiac instead of dark-age STDs? The only thing that comes close to what I'm on about that springs to mind is shooting bottles with Garrus in Mass fucking Effect 3. A post-ME *Bioware* title of all fucking things!

Indeed, Mass Effect 1-3 did a pretty good job of letting you be buds without fucking in MOST cases. Which is how it should be; write FRIENDSHIPS that you can CHOOSE to turn into relationships. Not the other way around.

I played about 5 hours of this and could not continue. The combat abilities, the statistical growth, the game systems in general, were so shallow and boring and restrained, it sapped my will to play. On a whim i started playing Pathfinder: Wrath of the Righteous, and boy am i glad i did. SOOOO much more fun. The graphics might be less technically impressive but it lets you be like 7 different kinds of god and the story changes based on which source of power you opt to go for. The level of mechanical depth is very satisfying and overall i find it infinitely more enjoyable than BG3. So if like me, you tried bg3 and were disappointed or underwhelmed, give wrath of the righteous a try.

Romance mechanics are great. The problem is that Larian totally failed on every possible level when it comes to make theirs. First of all the player should ALWAYS (with some rare exception) be the one engaging the romance. YOU should be the one that make the move to get that ass, not the other way around. Then there is the fact that romance should take time to archive. You should work your way up to it and make the right moves to get in your target good grace, something that is somehow totally absent from BG3. Every character will try to bang you as long as talk to them a couple of times. Then there is the obvious case of "let's pretend heteronormativy is a made up concept" which I don't think I even need to explain why it's bad. And lat but not least, they forgot that the default state of a relationship with a companion should be that small thing we call "friendship", or "platonic relationship". FOR SOME REASONS the blue haired weirdos in charge of Larian romances totally forgot that being good friend with people is something people do, especially with characters they do like and enjoy the company of. Instead they thought the only choices you have is kicking them in the nutts when they try to shove them in your face or just suck it up (both literally and figuratively). It's pretty insane to see how awful on every level the romance writing has been in that game, it's so bad that I feel like we need to find the name of the people in charge of that debacle and make sure Larian get rid of them, because just as sure as a bad apple will spoil the whole basket, an awful farleft weirdo will destroy your company and I'll be pretty sad to see this company die (or worst, get completely corrupted like so many others before them).

What I find absolutely rich is that Baldur's Gate 3 is so good from a gameplay standpoint that it compelled large swathes of the gaming industry to request that gamers "lower expectations" for other games. Great review as always, Lord Fist of Razors.
