As Loli states in the video, spaghetti westerns were considered trashy cinema at the time, cheap imitations of the real thing, in the same vein as the millions of Star Wars clones from foreign countries. Sergio Leone just managed to be talented enough a filmmaker to lift an entire genre into relevance. It's actually amazing that TGTBATU got such glowing reviews when it was released, bearing that in mind. Roger Ebert gave it a 3.5/4 stars, and admitted decades later that it should've been an easy 4 stars, if not for the stigma against spaghetti westerns at the time.

In fact as a side note - an western themed JRPG game called "Wild Arms" and it's composer Michiko Naruke stated that this movie and it's legendary OST created by Ennio Morricone is one of it's main inspirations for the game's soundtrack which the certain feel and tone of it remains. I just wanted to say TY for the review since it'll forever gonna be my happiest moments when my beloved grandpa was alive and where just arguing at each other because I'm too loud and excited for some reason 🤣😢 but at its stands this is my true masterpiece and I'll gonna tell this one to my grandchildren when I'm got old enough. The Dollars Trilogy unironically made it difficult for me to sit through most other westerns. Very few of them feel as epic and as enthralling. The Good, The Bad and The Ugly in particular made me sit in front of the screen in awe after it ended. Yeah, the whole "bunch of guys staring each other down for 5 minutes" has been pointed and laughed at to death, but in the context of the movie the tension is so thick you don't even notice. Then when the actual confrontation is over in 10 seconds it feels satisfying. I also share the sentiment that Tuco is the real main character. He has the most depth, we know the most about his history and what kind of enviorment shaped him into the man he is. Hell, he even goes on a bit of a character arc alongside Blondie as they grew to ,if not like, at least not hate each other. Blondie in particular seems to really grow to respect Tuco as he picks up on the hints to his past, moments of genuine emotional vulnerability he tries to shrug off and when he realises he withstood literal *torture* and that while Tuco is a rat, he's not totally inhuman. Unlike Angel Eyes who is more of a demon in the guise of a man. Tuco is also the character that probably suffers the most throughout the movie, making you kind of want to root for him after the halfway point. Heck, pretty sure both Eastwood and Van Cleef have even said at one point that they slightly regret how much less complex their characters are compared to Wallach's. Which is just a testament to how well written and performed Tuco is.

I'll write this before I watch the video. This was the first Western I had ever seen as a kid. now in a lot of other genres I'd face a lot of disappointment after watching arguably the best one of the genre first, but luckily I was born in the '90s, almost every Great Western was made by the time I was 10. and boy what a genre it is. there may be some wiggle room and argument as to if this is truly the best Western. but there's no argument that this movie is the quintessential western. The music, the look, the sounds, the way it was shot, the characters. The cliches and the references all start here. you play ecstasy of Gold for any person on the street, whether they've seen this movie or not, hell whether they've seen a western or not. they know it's a cowboy movie. this film will always remain right at the tippy top of my favorite films. Theres no question when it comes to Sergio Leone being the best Western director and the man Ennio Morricone is just as monumental if not more. simply put, even if you don't like westerns, this is one movie you should see before you die

I think one very under appriciated thing about these older movies are just the legnth of each shot. Just letting the auidence take in the scene and in calmer moments breathe. Constrasting with modern action movies where the average length of a cut is less than half a minute, and in extreme cases barely a few seconds. Like, you don't need a close up of whoever is speaking all the time, you don't need to hyper focus on every small action. Zoom out and let the actors act and interact with the stage. Of course, many of these actors started in theather and there you learn to act with your entire body, even when you're just speaking - walking around the set, gesturing, interacting with props on the stage and spice it up with some improv, like anyone would irl.

Quick note about the civil war aspect of the movie & Blondie being The Good: While it is true that all 3 main characters are apathetic to the conflict, they do still interact with it in different ways. Angel Eyes uses it to his advantage to gather information about the gold Tuco is completely indifferent and is happy as long as he can stay under the radar Blondie *does* feel empathy for the suffering the war is bringing about, but ultimately puts it out of his mind because he knows there's hardly anything he can do about it. Hell, this conscience is built up in the opening minutes of the movie too. As one of the implied reasons for why Blondie breaks up the arrangement between him and Tuco is because he nearly shoots an innocent bystander while trying to save Tuco from the rope. Meaning he realised that, as much money as they were making, it wasn't worth the risk of both being caught and completely innocent people being caught in the crossfire. So Blondie, although he's far from a moral paragon, does deserve his title of *The Good* Its just that "good" is very relative in this movie's setting.

Thanks for the review, anything about the good, the bad and the ugly is always a pleasure to see. My dad told me to watch the movie when it was aired on TV, that I will like it. I was around 10 and did not like Western at all (the classics you show are a perfect example why, I can appreciate those now but at the time they felt old, artificial, overplayed and quite ridiculous to the 10yo star wars fan I was at the time). I reluctantly watched, telling westerns sucks and will go sleep soon...The intro alone had me hooked and even if I played a little blasé, my dad saw I was hooked and smiled. I watched till the end even if it was too late and next day was schoolday... even my mom telling it was getting late and I should be sleeping was not really insistent, they saw it was not worth the drama to try to send me to bed 🤣🤣🤣 Still my favorite western till now, there are many other good ones, the other 2 from the trilogy for example, but this one is just on a level of his own. And Clint is Blondin, it's the role of his life (regardless of his other great roles), i have his face in mind when reading King's pistolero (so did King when writing it, apparently 😉)

I have returned from watching this movie proper. You are absolutely right. Words can never do justice to something like this, it is an experience you have to witness for yourself. Sure one can break down the scenes, the long takes and whatever. It is something everyone really should witness at least once in their life. Sure it gets referenced all the time in various types of media where thankfully it didn't get diluted or adopted by anyone else. Much like the gold found at the end, the greed between all three individual men kept me in deep with the film. Especially the music and just how beautiful it is at times while the sheer impact of the cannon fire shook me at times. But the one big moment that stuck with me was when Blondie wrote the gold's location under a rock and placed it in the middle. The twist caught me completely off guard as did the location. They don't make them like this anymore and I doubt there's anyone left that can.
