The whistling was performed by my Dad John O'Neill. He was involved with the spaghetti westerns as a session musician so was paid a flat fee with no royalties and not mentioned on the credits. John was also the whistler on the number 1 hit - The Whistling Jacksmith (I was Kaiser Bill's Batman), again as a session musician. A stooge was sent on Top of the Pops to mime to my Dad's great whistling. John was sought after for his crystal clear, note perfect whistling and singing because of his sight-reading skills - being able to read the score and simultaneously give a rendition of the tune either by whistling, singing or playing the trumpet. Although his name was John, he was often called 'Paddy O'Neill' in the business. He had a Geordie accent but could sing beautifully with an Irish accent so was the soloist on many Irish Melody LP's.
