By this time Rome was a shadow of its former self. Civil wars and corruption had plagued the empire. By this time most barbarians were Romanized.

@@421less1 the thing is is we live in a different time now and different circumstances i see the similarities between rome and the us but at the same time the us is surrounded by oceans, has tremendous nuclear capabilities, and a large army plus the worlds largest navy. not counting the civilians who own a majority percentage of the worlds privately owned weapons. militarily they will be fine they just need to fix their economy and get a good leader which has been lacking lately

@@65stang98 1, civilians owning weapons means next to nothing, especially in modern times. Civilians arent going to do shit to a military force that has already beaten the us army and made landfall. Thats fantasy. 2. The US army is indeed big and impressive. It is however extremely dependent on tech. You should look into how the US does in wargames with other civilized nations. They generally do well with pefect conditions but make them use different equipment and less technological advanced shit they get smacked around. Then when you learn all of their home defense monitoring, as well as their entire military all run on windows 98, and is super vulnerable they dont seem all that invincible. 3. Dont take comfort in anyones nuclear arsenal. Because when those get shot humanity is going to be wrapped up.

@@421less1 their isnt even a country on earth that could afford to get their military to the US mainland. nor does any country on earth have the landing crafts to do so. Plus theyd have to deal with the navy and airforce the whole way over not counting our allies as well. all air and naval forces of opposing countries would be decimated by superior us numbers and tech. also nuclear power itself isnt as much as an offensive weapon as its a deterrent. its a last ditch effort to destroy the enemy when no other options are available. No human that is sane would ever want to see a piece of the world wiped off the map. i wouldnt be surprised if a nuclear weapon is never used in actual warfare from here on out. Also the civilians is just a bonus. But you cant say 250 million people armed with ARs tank planes basically everything the military has wouldnt be a problem? thats a bit of a stretch. Look at any modern military vs guerilla warfare they dont tend to do0 very good. esp in the terrain of the us. invading armies will be traveling through nothing but steep mountains and empty dry deserts full of millions upon millions of guerilla fighters. truly a tactical nightmare for any invasion.

I love gothic architecture too! However, I would want to point out that it has approximately as much to do with the actual Goths as the modern subculture has. The term originated in the Renaissance as a derogatory one - basically dismissing the style of the High and Late Middle Ages as barbaric. This was the beginning of a long process of misappropriating the word "gothic", which started getting weird during the Romanticism.

There's a great doc here on YT about how malaria contributed to the fall. It came on the ships crossing the Med from north Africa, first devastating key agricultural communities on the coast. With no one to work the fields, food shortages were the immediate effect, especially for the Legionnaires. As we know from Napoleon, armies march on their stomachs. The disease quickly spread north, and they were helpless against it. It killed ruthlessly, no respecter of persons or class. This is a relatively new discovery, but they've found quite a bit of supportive evidence. It makes sense that some outside force was working against the mighty Romans, to cause such a fall to technologically inferior people. It was said when Rome fell, it was like the mother of the earth had died, that's how far reaching their influence was. Fascinating topic, I wonder what civilization's fall will be studied 1000 years from now, though I'm sure they'll still be scrutinizing the Romans as well.

What shocks me is the fact that the Goths presented here are looking like they are Dacians from the Trajan's column. The way they are dressed, armed and the dragon from the shield (old Dacian wolf) seems to be open a gate long time closed. Have the Dacians (called Gets by the Greeks) and the Gots something in common?

This is a great explanation to why Rome fell under the Goths, these people were way better equipped for conquest now that they settled and prospered in Romanized lands. Essentially, they learned how to transform their way of living from clanship to statehood, paving the way to abandon their raiding mentality and to be replaced by permanent conquest.

I think the fall of Rome was caused by over extension and out-dated bureaucracy than it has to do with giving up lands without violence. What I explained, is how the Goths were able to sustain their lands and bureaucracy after they conquered Rome, not why Rome fell.

By the end of the 1st century AD, Rome was already giving its powers to foreign born emperors, and the army was more and more made up of foreigners.By the 4th AD century the whole empire was run by foreigners, and Italians nowhere to be seen.When the Punic wars were going on in the 3rd century BC, and the Romans suffered huge losses, they did not give up but kept on fighting until victory was achieved.The reason because at that time all the army and roman power system was 100% roman, not foreign born.When the nation gets repopulated with foreigners its inevitable that the empire will collapse.The US and all the western Europe filling up themselves with foreigners will end up in the same way as the ancient romans did.

But you jump straight ahead to give its equivalent in modern times in Europe and the US. Rome did not fall because they let foreign people ( out of a sudden ). They incorporated foreign people since the conquest of Italy and since conquest of Gaul. Everyone knows that any people who are conquered by Rome have to serve in their military ranks and become citizens. So how about stopping this racial sensitivity and realize that your "western civilization" is not going to fall because of people of different color.

Carlo Troya historian from 1784-1858 and Prime Minister of two Sicilies Kingdom in his book Hystory of Italy in the Middle Ages (8700 pages) more than 3500 pages are about the Goths. In volume II (1) Eruli e Goti he published an Appendix, Fasti Getici o Gotici (A Getic or Gothic History), volume II(2) contains another annex, Paralipomeni a Fasti Getici o Gotici (Daco-Getae-Normand Facts), basically dismantles the greatest error of ancient history (Tacitus and Pliny the Younger), namely that both branches of Goths, the Visigoths and Ostrogoths were of Germanic origin. While the Geto-Goths were guided by the harmonious Belagine laws inspired by Deceneus, Germanic tribes used a method of pricing a person in case of reward, guidrigildo or wergild, a savage procedure in Geto-Goths view. Also were very different in language, building knowledge of architecture, music, medicine, etc. But Goths incorporates in time some Germanic tribes like Vandals and Borgognons. Not to mention the Caracalla edict from 209-211 after murdering his brother Geta along with other 20k supporters, that damnatio memoria of the name Geta, Gete was forbidden to use so Geta, Gete became Goth.

I'm curious if any of the history CC's are looking through the online google books archive for copyright expired materials. IIRC the channel TopTenzNet (no affiliation) had an upload within the last 2 weeks about the Google books archives and copyright materials that are soon to expire this year. I imagine there is an enormous amount of potential copyright free artwork available to anyone that is willing to do a bit if digging and research. I'm no expert on fair use or copyright, but as I understand it, any book with a 1923 copyright or earlier is considered public domain. It might be an interesting source of fresh visuals. -Jake

At min. 17:28, 23: 43, 26: 30 you used pictures of the Dacians on the Trajan's column, built by Apolodor of Damascus, at the request of Emperor Trajan. Those are Dacians or geti , not Goths. In 625 spiral images are presented the two wars with the Dacians 101-102 and 105-106. In Dacia the use of the Latin language from then until today continued. Romania remained an island of Latinity in a sea of Slavic peoples. Those who remained north of the Danube were the Dacians and the Roman veterans of the legions of Gemina and Macedonica. Dacians were a name given by the Romans to those who lived in Dacia. The Greeks said Geti to those who lived in Dacia. Some historians have altered a letter, and Geti have become Goti. The Dacians and Getae must be removed from history and replace with Goti ( Goths).

I want to add a little bit of constructive criticism here. At 3:20 you have a picture of a river which I think you mean to represent the Danube frontier. On closer look it seems like this is from SE Asia or may be South America. The palm trees and water buffalo give it away =P. I know its hard to find stock photos but I just wanted to point it out. Other than that keep up the good work!

I got hooked with those viking videos from history time, i have a son who married a Dane, hence I have three viking gks, so sweet, funny, and clearly, very healthy. like all americans, i can only swallow history and or geography by brit accented narration... but these are so much better than most, the graphics involve MAPs.... which are crucial... I wish the guys (and girls, of course) who do WW2 docus (with the exception of mr TIK, who is generous with his maps) would learn to give more maps as well

Love the idea of the video, so thumbs up :). Still there are 3 things I would like to point out: 1. You kept saying that the barbarians north of the Danube had little knowledge initially of the Roman way of life. But there was the Dacian tribes / kingdoms for a few hundred years which were in contact and emulated in a certain extend the Romans, then there was Dacia as a Roman province, etc; 2. Beware of the pictures showing Goths, as the one presented by you show a warrior with a shield on which is depicted the Dacian / Getae tribes, which were there before the Romans and the Goths, and due to the name and location similarity wrecked havock in the minds of the early historians (of course some of them were still living there once the Goths arrived, only adding to the confusion); 3. The war that broke the balance in the region is called the Marcomannic Wars, not Macromannic. Besides these mentions, can't wait for the next part to appear. :)

Hey there. Thanks! 1. I was stressing the standard Roman viewpoint, not the actual reality. Some 'Barbarians' had a lot of contact and knowledge of Romans, as is shown later throughout the video. 2. There were only a handful of copyright images on the internet. 3. True! Next episode is a goodun!

sciphynuts Osrto means sharp in Serbian and Visi means Higher in Serbian!Like word Barbarian from old Serbian language but its more complicated I forgot how it was build.It was Bar first what means at least in Serbian and they were Nomads with only possession what they have needed or Bar a bare minimum.Later Bar becomes barbarin but its a long story...

Great work as usual. Hailing from one of the last corners of the WRE to fall I was taught the "Empire against the savages" narrative. However I always felt that something was missing... specially with the goths. Could you make a smaller video explaining the differences between the Thervingi and Greuthungi and their society and culture pre-Adrianople a bit futher if possible? They seem to be unlike any of the tribes that roamed the steppes and Germania before them and it's a shame that so little is known about them.

The fact that the erstwhile Roman province of Dacia is now Romania, and its inhabitants speak a Romanic language in a sea of Slavonic, gives an indication of its status.
