I love how the music of this film captures Ben’s state of mind during the story. First emptiness, then emptiness plus self loathing, then heartbreak, then hope, and back to emptiness.

To me The Graduate is much more than a great movie. It takes me back to the early 70s when I suffered immensely from my first heartbreak over a girl I believed to be " The One ". We strolled those same streets. Ashby Ave. Frequented " Moe's Bookstore " seen in the movie. When he runs along side the bus. Walking the U.C. Berkeley campus. She broke my heart but 45 years later....we're still friends. She even once apologized to me saying it was wrong of her what she did to me. That was very nice of her to say. Anyway, I finally met the real girl of my dreams in the year 2000. Together 21 years now. How time flys. Oh how I can relate to the pain and love and longing Benjamin was experiencing. Katherine Ross is so gorgeous too. ☺

@@jamestiscareno4387 that’s a great story! The first one always hurts the most. Scarborough Faire is also, in my opinion, the perfect musical embodiment of what that feeling feels like. It’s extremely sad and painful but beautiful at the same time.

The affluent wealthy suburban combined with young adult and teenage themes of confusion, boredom, yearning for something different yet belonging at the same time, plus the use of current popular music to capture the moods. This film must've been a major influence on John Hughes.

The most poignant bit of this montage is when Elaine and her dad drive off in the car; Mrs. Robinson heads toward the car to, presumably, say a final goodbye...and they don't wait for her.

With his dad cleaning the leaves out of the pool, you can already tell that the summer has ended. It’s such a cool shot because in an instant you already know the passage of time that has taken place.

What occurred to me that made this and all these scenes in the movie so poignant ---- is for music from the 70s (and earlier) there were no "MTV-like Videos". You just had the words and music only and no "visual connection". So to see this movie and hear these songs playing during a scene ---- it added an entirely new element than I had experienced before from only listening to the 33RPM albums on their own. That's a key reason why I love this movie so much . . . . combining S&G's songs with a visual scene. Wow.

Look up Paul Simon's interview with Dick Cavett from 1971 and he goes into a bit of detail on how he composed both the melody and the lyrics while collaborating with The Graduate director Mike Nichols. It's almost like a precursor to how bands and musicians formulated their music videos when MTV changed the music landscape.

On TV right now. The feelings... The ability to relate. The perfect mix of music and film. My heart hurts. But then the very next scene: Ben's mom screams like a lunatic, "EYEEE don't beLEIVE it!!" The half baked ideas of my youth. I miss that fucking passion. That obsession with movies like t h is, Harold and Maude, taxi driver...It's interesting and on some dumb level important that I'm a young black woman, child of immigrants. My favorite films are majority the stories of white, lonely males. Maybe one day I will see myself look like myself on camera. Anyway, More importantly, if it weren't for ppl telling some form of their story through song and film and writing with humor things that hurt where would I be? I would've given up long ago, in my adolescence. There would be no happy ending for freaks like me.😶 Is it just me or is Elaine's retelling of her mother's "rape" super awkward and uncomfortable?? Like she's describing something not completely fucked up and disturbing. Oh geez. One more thing. "I don't know what's happening." "U mean yr confused?" And their early morning talk goes this totally unclear, invulnerable way. The idea of marriage based on love, being "in love", makes shit more complicated, doesn't it. Because when that feeling fades as it can and frequently does, what is the point. What is marriage. Oh this movie;so important! So real! So special! And entertaining on another level. "He said he thought we'd make a pretty good team."

Greatest movie ever. Classic. Sexy. I watched this as a teenager and I there was something tantalizing about the power Mrs. Robinson has I’m securing her young lover. Deep down as women, I believe we all want that power to be so seductive that we’re irresistible...and that’s what made it such an erotic movie

Benjamin's a very lucky Man. If it were My Parents, they would have said "Get a Job or get the F out of here!" You want to chillax so be it but it's getting out of hand. Also Benjamin and Mrs. Robinson didn't realize how much "Pain" they bought to Elaine with their betrayal. Benjamin's Room is so cool. When he's getting ready to go out, it kind of reminds me of when Miss Ellie asked Jock where he was going when he was spending "time" with Julie Grey. I also notice that at least in those Days, Women didn't always use their resources. In Mrs. Robinson's Day you went to College to find a Good Husband, in Elaine's day it was kind of similar. You also saw that Mrs. Robinson & Elaine didn't have a good relationship with each other.
