Geek corner: Unequal wheelbase was a common Renault thing due to using compact torsion bar + trailing arm rear suspension in many models. The torsion bars ran almost the full width of the car so couldn't be aligned - one was in front of the other, leading to one suspension mount being in front of the other leading to the unequal wheelbase. It's quirky but actually quite neat - French cars of the era being known for their supple ride. Long torsion bars would allow long suspension travel with less stress on the torsion bar or changes to the spring rate.
@notroll12792 жыл бұрын
...and May could have found out about this within a fraction of the time this silly vid took him... The main problem of the R4 was not its technical design but the awful execution and assembly.

Very comfy but not exactly going anywhere fast if there were bends on the road! :D

I've driven loads of Renaults, most fun I had was in the little red R4 postal vans with the coat hanger gear change, for which no clutch was strictly necessary, some 5's (loads of fun in the Ardennes) but my favorite has to be the 20. Renault tested its diesel engine in the taxi models in Antwerp, and they lasted forever. (some of those engines were used in other cars long after de 20's, 30's, even the 25's were discontinued) I drove a couple of TS models and one GTL : fast, nimble, great fun to drive, very reliable and cheap in maintenance. in the case of the Renault 21, the difference was in the time of development of both engines, the 2 liter engine (AKA "J Engine" or Douvrin Engine) was codeveloped with Peugeot/Citroen during the 70s and 80s, it could be found also in the Citroen CX and Peugeot 505, and it was designed to be a longitudinal engine. In the case of the 1.7, was a newer engine developed during the 80s, the succesor of the Cleon Fonte Engine and known as "F Engine" or just Fonte, it was designed to be transversal, variations of the F engine can be found on modern cars such as de F4R or the F4RT (Yes, the Fart engine... but it's the engine from the Renault Megane RS and Fluence GT)

My parents had a 21 back in the day. I remember it having really sumptuous rear seats, unlike the Granada we had at a similar time.
@sbomorse2 жыл бұрын
@Ahrimanteater we had an 85 Granada but it wasn't powerful enough for towing so my parents upgraded to a 2.0ltr Renault 21. I've actually owned K-Reg and M-Reg Granada's the best being the Granada Scorpio, it was so sumptuous with its heated leather seats and cruise control. I'm sure the Granada was the first car to ever have a heated windscreen, something I LOVED. I now have a Kona Electric and although you can preheat the cabin in winter to help defrost, nothing clears a window quicker than Ford's "Quick Clear" Also if you try to keep the air con off to save battery in the Hyundai it steams up. Having a heated screen would mean that wouldn't be an issue and they use less energy than the HVAC.

The Renault 21 was sold in the US as the Renault/Eagle Medallion. The longitudinal mounted engine idea was modified by Chrysler for its LH platform cars. You can also blame ( thank?) AMC's contractual obligations to Renault for the Eagle Premier/Dodge Monaco. Those cars were also used as a basis for the Chrysler LH platform.
@mrgreengenes042 жыл бұрын
@Karl von Bahnhof that was the main issue. Even the Chrysler techs weren't all that familiar with them. Personally I love the look, especially the Dodge Monaco with the crosshair grille. If they were easier to work on, I'd drive one today.
@Ashcrash822 жыл бұрын
This explains a lot for me. I never could figure why the LH cars had a longitudinal engine with front drive. seemed way over complicated to me. They were good and comfortable cars, though. Main issue I heard of was, due to packaging, the steering gear was mounted to the firewall, behind the oil pan/trans. For some reason, this seems to have played heck with steering geometry, and they were known to need tie rods, ball joints, etc. on a semi regular basis.

Renault did that with 21 because they didn't have a transmission to support larger engines in transversal configuration, so rather than developing a new one, they 🥖.
