Love this group. The Grass Roots are an American rock band from the 60's-70's. I had some of their records. They had lots of great songs such as "Let's Live For Today", "I'd Wait A Million Years", "Things I Should Have Said", "Bella Linda", "Lovin' Things", "The River Is Wide", "Heaven Knows", "Walking Through The Country", "Baby Hold On", "Temptation Eyes" "Sooner Or Later", "Two Divided By Love", "Glory Bound", "The Runway" etc.

The Grassroots had a string of top 10 singles from the late 60s to the mid 70s. Rob Grill was the main lead singer The had a great pop rock sound with a little psychedelic influence thrown in

Watching “American Bandstand” was a Saturday morning ritual for many of us growing up. It was hosted by Dick Clark for more than 30 years (1956-1988). He was the founder of Dick Clark Productions. He also hosted game shows and owned several radio stations. Because of his young audience members on “American Bandstand” and the fact that he didn’t seem to age, he was sometimes called “America’s oldest teenager”. (There were also jokes about him being a vampire, for the same reason.) His influence on the development of rock and roll music was more profound than you could imagine. Also, for decades “Dick Clark’s New Year’s Rockin’ Eve” from Times Square was THE show to watch (or at least have on in the background until the big countdown to midnight) for a large percentage of Americans. After he suffered a stroke in 2004, Regis Philbin covered for him and the following year Ryan Seacrest began helping out and eventually took over all of his duties. “American Bandstand” had several different theme songs, including “Bandstand Boogie”. In 1975 Barry Manilow put words to “Bandstand Boogie” and released it. His version became the theme song and it seems to me that it also got a lot of radio airplay. It’s a great song with a big band sound.

The Grass Roots is an American rock band that charted frequently between 1965 and 1975. The band was originally the creation of Lou Adler and songwriting duo P. F. Sloan and Steve Barri. In their career, they achieved two gold albums and two gold singles, and charted singles on the Billboard Hot 100 a total of 21 times. Among their charting singles, they achieved Top 10 three times, Top 20 six times and Top 40 14 times.[6][7] They have sold over 20 million records worldwide.[8]

Thrilled and shocked to see The Grassroots being heard!! So glad I came back in and double-checked your channel... The Grassroots were freaking fantastic. Every song they did. Like Three Dog Night. Best Hippy Era groups ever, imo. Only ones I still must have. ❤

Great reaction, Saeed! I didn't remember how many hits they had. When I was only 15 I had the great privilege of flying w/ my parents from NJ to visit my just-wed 25 yr old brother and my sister-in-law in Oakland, California. My brother had worked for General Dynamics in Connecticut, where he met my sister-in-law. She was still in college but had a summer job there. They transferred my brother to their Oakland, California division, so the newlyweds got to experience California living for a couple of years. What a Christmas trip! On long plane flight there I first experienced hearing songs repeat on a tape loop. Needless to say my favorite Grassroots song is "Where Were You When I Needed You," because I first remember hearing it on that wonderful trip!❤ Also are three of the members brothers?!

True story - I was at Disneyland with my family and grandparents, and we had a reservation at the restaurant by Pirates of the Caribbean, Blue Bay I think, and were heading over that way from Tomorrowland. I was maybe 12 - 1971 or 1972, and the Grass Roots were one of my favorite bands. There used to be a lot of cover and theme bands around the park, this music was coming from the area that would become Captain EO, and oh it's a Grass Roots song, so I moved closer and realized it was the Grass Roots! I don't remember how we found each other, and I did get chewed out, mostly because they missed the reservation, worth it because the show was awesome. Creed Batton from "The Office" was their original guitarist.

The No. 1 record in 1967, "The Letter" by Box Tops has a back story. It was sang by Alex Chilton in a deep blue-eyed soul voice, several years later when he formed the cult classic power pop band Big Star, he sang in a completely different voice!

I sat in front of American Bandstand as a toddler, it was a staple for decades. AB was a dance show with new hit records for the teens. The show started with a few dances, had a Rate-A-Record section and then someone performed "live". (to the record). Every Saturday morning growing up. Dick Clark was timeless.

I also watched American Bandstand religiously in the 60s and 70s. 🙂 I actually saw the Grassroots on AB. Dick Clark said here that they'd been on the show 19 times. I can't be sure it was this one that I saw. It might have been "Sooner or Later". Great band!

As someone who has played guitar, bass and drums in cover bands, I can say that, at least for me, it was harder playing bass and singing than playing drums and singing. The drums tend to be more "on the beat" while the bass parts were more syncopated with relation to the vocals.

Great song. Always on my Playlist. Weird overdub. This is clearly the studio version. I'm wondering if they were lip-synching, a common practice during these live variety show performances. It was impractical to bring all of the brass, keyboards, other instruments and backup singers to a small stage.
