The Grave of Harry Gordon Selfridge, Sr.
(11 January 1858 - 8 May 1947)
was an American retail magnate who founded the London-based department store Selfridges. His 20-year leadership of Selfridges led to his becoming one of the most respected and wealthy retail magnates in the United Kingdom. He was known as the 'Earl of Oxford Street'.
Born in Ripon, Wisconsin, and raised in Jackson, Michigan, Selfridge delivered newspapers and left school at 14 when he found work at a bank in Jackson. Selfridge eventually obtained a stock boy position at Marshall Field's department store in Chicago, where over the next 25 years, he rose to become a partner. In 1890, he married the wealthy Rose Buckingham who was from a prominent Chicago family.
In 1906, following a trip to London, Selfridge invested £400,000 to build a new department store in what was then the unfashionable western end of Oxford Street. Selfridges, Oxford Street, opened to the public on 15 March 1909, and Selfridge remained chairman until 1941. In 1947, he died in London at age 89.

I wonder what happened to his son and daughters. Harry Selfridge was an amazing person who lost his way when his wife and mother died. They were his guiding lights. RIP Harry. It seems he needs a bigger gravestone and monument. Someone should start a go fund me or something to really honour him.

Would be simply wonderful if when you find the time to visit one of the ww2 incredibly important men. Sir Barnes Wallis died in 1979 at the ripe old age of 92 and is buried at St Lawrence's Church, Effingham, Surrey. His grave reflects his extraordinary achievements on a deliberately modest Cumbrian slate headstone but, like all things left to face nature, it had become a little in need of some TLC.

Glad to see you looking so much better! Another extremely interesting video. Just like my comment for" Laurence of Arabia" I had no idea that Mr Selfridge and family members are buried locally. I have driven past Highcliff Castle many times but never seen it properly.Something else perhaps I should rectify!

Hey, great video, I've always been fascinated by Harry Selfridge. He was a really interesting person. Would you please visit the graves of other Americans who are buried in Britain, like Matoaka (Pocahontas) and one of my favorite poets, T.S. Eliot? ❤

I do enjoy a nice little church in a beautiful village. If only all locations had signed directions, would save a lot of time. Good work Rufus.

Obrigado!

Hey Rufus, my first time commenting. Love the Channel, great videos. It's been a while since you last posted a video, did you quit KZbin? If not, keep up the great content. Can't wait 'til your new video comes out, much respect from the U.S.

Another exceptional video 📹 👏 A visit to Joan Noele Gordon would be simply outstanding 👏 (25 December 1919 - 14 April 1985) was an English actress and television presenter. She played the role of Meg Mortimer (originally Richardson, later Ryder) in the long-running British soap opera Crossroads from 1964 to 1981, with a brief return in 1983. She died on April 1th, 1985 in Birmingham, in the United Kingdom at the age of 65 years old. Gordon died of stomach cancer and she was buried in the churchyard of St Mary’s Parish Church in Ross-on-Wye.

Lovely video, I'm visiting the UK including Great Britain in September and I am intrigued by this man who was born in my country of the US. I know he turned shopping into a grand experience in England. His story was quite tragic. I am amazed he was not interred with his wife and daughter. My family has one grave that has 4 of my relatives buried in one grave with only one inscription which is sad. I am only certain of one who was buried there as his name is inscribed and he died in a car crash in the 1940's. I know there is a mother & son who both died of leukemia and I am unsure if my great grandfather is interred there. Andrew Hamilton Doorly. I really need to visit and see if there are records if they even have an office at this point. It is located in Philadephia where the graveyard has become a place where unfortunately it is used as a drug den so jumping over used needles is always a great feat. Oh well, I digress. Thank you I may visit his grave as well at Highcliff. Thank you.

Yea sorry about that, the problem was time, work, family and the cost of travel. I loved making the videos but the graves were getting further away & committing to it was getting harder. With other more popular channels doing the same thing, I felt no one would really watch or care as so many have been covered already.

If I do a grave that someone has already done, it doesn’t seem to attract any viewers as it has been seen already, and no one really wants to watch another video on the same site. 😞
