I hear you on the plastic- We use glass. I got rid of all of my tupperware a some years ago. I would love to know how you are getting the old radio shows, please share that with us. That's something that I'd really enjoy. I've been doing some ancestry research and I'm enjoying that. I love history too! I've been buying old books at the thrift store and reading them. @@523jbarrett Yes! It can be so satisfying. My parents were raised as "city kids," but after they married, they decided to buy a little house on 3 acres of land. To say conditions were "primitive" there would be an understatement! But they learned to grow a garden, can food, raise chickens, sew clothing and bake homemade bread and desserts. And we kids learned so much in the process too!

I live in a 500 year old stone cottage that was updated in the 60s by adding indoor plumbing, electricity and a phone line, plus really terrible decor. It has lots of downsides, it is tiny, hard to keep clean and dark in winter, to name a few, but we love it.

Me too. The house was created 150 years ago from a very old farm house. The end wall is over 4 ft thick the others are 3ft. It acts like a huge stone heat radiator. The decor isn't terrible - its all ours from when we renovated the house that had become uninhabitable from being empty for 25 years. It took 4 years to bring back to life as a home again, but we love living here. When the gales and storms hit us off the Atlantic we feel so safe with these solid walls around us.

In the late 70s we moved overseas where I dealt with very different living conditions (including a wringer washer). That cookbook was a super help as I learned so much from it. Now, our daughter found my old copy recently and is thrilled with trying out some of the recipes too.

I was born in 1940 and lived in the country, no electric, going to the well and pumping all our water winter and summer, going to an outhouse even at 20 below. My mom with sore hands from hanging out clothes, always working no matter how much her feet hurt, no refrigeration, everything had to be canned, shopping in town, probably only once a month. How wonderful it was for her to finally have a few conveniences. A lot of good times, but a lot of not so good either. She had a lot of worries such as what happens when someone gets sick, worrying about things like another depression, or rationing when nothing was available, worrying about so many family members in WW 2, I was married in 1962 and except for a computer don't live that much different.

One must be careful to not overly romanticise the old days. Women had little time for themselves and unless you had hired help, had to do all by themselves. Little time to read and no respite left one exhausted. Many died in childbirth and no meds for infections debilitated everyone including the children. Be careful as you reminisce, remember all of it.

@@HomesteadTessie Owen and I share quite a bit in common (I guess no one noticed LOL) and of them is old radios :) But I am surprised that you noticed a shortwave radio, nowaday even men would hardly know what shortwave is, at least the younger generation. Besides it is oldfashion, it is a prepper item (in my opinion) when something is hitting the fan and a lot of communication falls down, the shortwave band is the way to go. This band is known for the fact that it doesn't need large transmitters and the signals could travel around the world. So it can be handy in time of need.

Old fashioned living is a part of your soul. I was raised to be a homesteader as were my siblings . My skills are worth their weight in gold. Nowadays more people are learning to appreciate it even on a small scale. I think that's great. Love all the butternut squash in front of you 😊. I grow them every year to cook and bake with. I have old hardcover books that are 100 to 150 years old. I love them and have read all of them. They're mostly about farm life and wartime. I use them to decorate all around the house but in a useful way. I stack them to elevate some houseplants. Makes them look great. I do use modern methods but 80% of what I use is manual and old time ways. I'm 55 but I've always lived a homestead life. I enjoyed it just as much in my twenties as I do now. Looking forward to your 2021 videos focussing on happiness, old fashioned living, and history. Have a great night my friend. 😊💜

For the last 10 years or so I've been listening to recordings of radio broadcasts from the 1920's, 30's, 40's and 50's. Especially mysteries and series like "Lights Out" and "Inner Sanctum." Such fun. I also have a collection of book of "household advice for women" as they used to call them. I think the oldest one I have is from about 1850. Sometimes I think the reason I enjoy these things so much is that we know that women of those eras had their heartaches and their worries, but they kept on pushing through and one way or another, they survived. That gives me hope that I can too.

I found out that my grandma had and I thought I recognized it had the tablecloth that you have in the background the yellow one with the place settings. She also had that on her kitchen table quite often. Oh I love squash more so winter squashes. As always I always look forward to your videos. And every now and then I find something that I ask you about. I think the first thing I ever asked you about was the Box you had in your refrigerator and you said it was essential oils.

Tessie, you are so right. Old-fashioned living is so wonderful for those of us who choose to. Your beautiful home was built the same year I was born. Your such an inspiration Tessie and I’m gleaning so many awesome ideas. Well.. time to light the oil lamps and settle in my granny rocker with a book and hot chocolate. Blessings Tessie and much love.

Hi Tessie. How nice that you want to do more old fashioned living. Last winter I started to sew again. Its been so rewarding.....almost addicting. I love wearing skirts, dresses and aprons. Making your own can be so rewarding. Even clothing for the grandchildren is so much fun. Take care Tessie. May you find peace, joy and comfort while on your new adventure💕💕☺x

I love your canning garage Tessie. I am so looking forward to all that you have planned this coming year. I wish that my Daughter in law would get rid of all our plastic bowls and cups. I don't like using them. I think that she doesn't buy the glass ware, is because she thinks that my two teenage grandaughters would break them lol. I do love the old ways. Of course I am 62 yrs. old. I miss the simpler times. I love you Sweet Sister. Stay safe and well. God Bless Y'all. Huggggggggggs

Tessie, my great grandma was born in 1887, she was a huge influence in my life ❤️😊 she lived to be nearly 101 years old 😢 she showed me all the ways to keep house, cook, laundry etc! I see several things you have that remind me of simpler ways! I have been changing to glass in my home for the last year or so! I hate plastic! Have a blessed day!

Trying to remove or eliminate plastics from modern life is difficult. I reuse glass jars and bottles. I did purchase reusable glass containers for food storage. Candles add ambience so I use them often. My cookbook collection spans the 1940s to present day. The serving sizes from the 40s to the 80s are so small compared to today. Love your outlook on daily life, going back to basics and keeping it simple.

Now, if I can conquer making bread!! LOL Love you my Pa. sister~~stay warm!!
