Australia is in crisis. After WW1, soldiers were offered land but honestly the land is both poor in quality and in some cases, stolen from the Aboriginese. The Great Depression slams into the country, meaning promises of fair pay for what wheat could be grown disappear into thin air. Western Australia is starting to murmer about independence from the rest of the country. And to top it all off, 20,000 emus have decended upon Campion. Senator George Pearce has an idea. Allow Western Australians to fight off the emus using weapons of war, film it for big spectacle, and reap the credit for helping in a time of crisis. What could go wrong?

I love the story of the Emu Wars and I did not actually know that about the Aboriginal people that's a fascinating new part of the story and would love to hear y'all go in-depth on that but saying I should not feel bad for the farmers and soldiers in the story because of it it's wrong it was the government and politicians that did that in fact you guys said yourself the returning soldiers were getting just as screwed as everybody else

@@stinkygravy06 not at all. The Emu War is most definitely a bizarre piece of our history, and one that we joke about. We are not reverent about anything. Even though the emu and kangaroo are on our coat of arms we eat both of them on occasion as a kind of delicacy I suppose. Both have at times been considered pests, though not so much now.

So in Australia we used to have cavalry called the light horse. Now I don't know if it's a myth or not, but light horse member were supposedly tasked with plucking the feathers of an emu while mounted as a show of riding skill they weren't meant to kill the bird. After getting them they placed the in their slouch hat as a symbol they were excellent riders. Fast forward to modern times members of Australia's army cavalry units or roles now wear emu feathers in their slouch hat. The officers don't just wear them everyone does so long as they are in a cavalry role or attached to a cavalry unit. Just thought someone might want to get clarification on the feathered hats thing it was never "for the officers."

The .303 British is definitely not a wimpy round. The (admittedly hollowpoint) commercial hunting version is perfectly capable of taking out moose and black bear. The FMJ used by the "diggers" was likely less effective due to lack of expansion; still, it was reasonable to think that a burst of .303 from a Lewis into an emu's boiler room would be effective.

No they fought German militarism for common humanity's benefit. There is zero evidence that they supported any policy against Aborigines. Also this myth that Australia was regressive is completely false. One of the most famous and celebrated ANZACs from WW1 was half Chinese - Billy Sling. The fact that the writer thinks some people deserve to live in misery because of something that happened to some indigenous person is pure malevolence.

6:58 The natural predators of emus are dingoes and wedged-tailed eagles however even then they usually don't go after full grown emus because not a lot can kill a 6 ft tall bird actually the only thing that could reliably kill an adult emu is a human with a gun and even then they can take a few bullets before dying and it's even harder to get close enough to them to actually you know hit your shot They also are highly aggressive then if they get on you you are dead because their claws are razor sharp and 6 in long so it's basically like being sad with three 6-in Long knives

Point of clarification about the wearing of emu plumes. At the time they we worn by the Australian Light Horse which were mounted infantry and they were worn by all ranks. In the modern Australian Army they are still worn by all ranks in units of the Royal Australian Armoured Corps (RAAC). Incidentally we call them 'Kangaroo feathers'.

As a Western Australian it was great to see this. We love that we got our arses kicked by the emus. The emu war is a humbling tale all West Aussies know and love. I don't know if it will be covered, but apparently when some of the people involved were later awarded the OBE (Order of the British Empire), the joke was that their awards stood for One Big Emu. WA has always had a troubled history with animal species. We have a dog-proof fence, and a rabbit-proof fence trying to keep these pests out of our crops. The latest issue is now Cane Toads - a species Australia introduced to control a different pest that went rogue. The Wheatbelt produces a lot of wheat, but the soil is marginal and the climate is becoming increasingly arid. The town of Campion didn't ring a bell, so I checked it out. It is abandoned and is now a ghost town. The closest inhabited town is Mukinbudin, I think. As a final note, West Aussies are also still up for a good grumble about secession whenever we feel slighted by the Eastern States. Maybe we should train some Emus to patrol our borders with the east. (Emus are scary, but cool.)
