The Great Hymn to the Aten

Let's Talk Religion

4 жыл бұрын

This is the first part in a new series I'm trying out where I will present religious texts (or parts of texts) that are interesting or noteworthy.
This one features the "Great hymn to the Aten", an ancient religious text in devotion to the god "Aten" that was allegedly written by Pharaoh Akhenaten during the tumultuous era known as the "Amarna period" when the old pantheon of gods was seemingly temporarily replaced with a single, universal God of the sun (or more, precisely - light).
It is for this reason that Atenism is sometimes considered the first monotheistic religion in the world, which would make this hymn one of the first religious expression of monotheism ever.
It also just happen to be very beautiful, aside from being historically significant.
What do you think of it? Let's discuss in the comments.

Out of all the religions, Sun worship makes most sense to me (no disrespect intended). It is the literal source of all life, everything we see and do is due solely to the power of the Sun.

Lines up with the vibrations/frequency wierdos, being that if frequenices/vibrations are quite literally our experiances and form, then it makes sense the most powerful and life-driving of those forms would be the sun, a giant reactor which crushes atoms to make energy, constantly and hugely.

Such a powerful text ! It gave me chills the first time I listened to it. I especially love this translation, it's poetic. Of all actions, worshipping is probably one of the most emotionally powerful ones. I personally see it as completely relieving ourselves from all that is burdening our minds, completely abandoning ourselves, giving ourselves up to a conceptual being/force... It's intense ! The feeling of faith you get from doing so is really pleasurable, it's a beatitude, an inner love and tranquility that is very soothing. It makes you feel lightheaded, almost like a drunkenness. And this text really conveys all of this ! The power of poetry !

So true. In India we call sun or Surya the "pratyaksha daivam" or the visible divinity. To us, Surya is the inner soul of all beings, animate and inanimate, and the visible orb His glorious symbol. There is a Upanishad or sacred text of esoteric teachings dedicated to the sun called Chakshushopanishad. It literally means the Upanishad of the Eyes. It is called so because of the belief that if one sits in the sun esp the rising sun, recites this Upanishad and let the sun's rays fall directly on the eyes, all ailments relating to the eyes will be cured. Another hymn dedicated to Surya named Suryasatakam written by Mayura Varman extolls the virtues of the sun and His ability to cure diseases. There are lots of hymns dedicated to Surya and scriptures stipulate that one has to sit in the sun, wearing scanty clothes to soak up the sun's rays while reciting them to receive the grace of Surya. Pregnant mothers offer sweet rice to the sun asking for his protection and blessings for good offspring. Many people here still observe fasting and vows on sundays in honour of the sun god. And our new year or Vishu is celebrated on April when the sun transits into the constellation of Aries where he is exalted. There are temples dedicated to the sun and for religious Hindus the day begins with salutations offered to the sun god Surya.

This is fascinating. But I listened to this while reading Psalm 104 and I don't think they are really alike. It is a great description of the sun. I find Atenism fascinating with its non anthromorphic depiction of the one sun god Aten. Even the Roman Sol Invictus was often depicted as a man with rays coming out of his head driving a chariot. You can see the purpose of this new religion though in the only ones that interact with the sole god Aten are Arkenhaten and his wife Nefertiti. To consolidate all power in the Pharaoh and his wife and remove any power from the priesthood of the former ruling god Amun. Is monotheism necessarily always good and better than polytheism. The monotheism of Judaism was so different that it must have completely different and independent origin.

Thank You so much for this! It's incredible to think this is over 3,000 years old, arguably the first ever documented expression of religious devotion. It's almost moving in how it resonates in the mind and in the soul in that you can almost hear Arkenaten himself uttering these words all those many, many sun and moons ago in times that we can barely conceive of. It fittingly ends with "eternally alive", and so it was that Arkhenaten's legacy was preserved and immortalised in stone even if they tried so hard to erase him. Glory to the Aten!

Akhenaten didn't die... he was made anathema and declared to be dead. His increasing oppressions of his subjects rendered the situation untenable and forced the long-suffering Egyptian's hand to do the unthinkable and defy their cruel lord. This storm loomed at a time of increasing personal strain between Nefertiti and Akhenaten. His lust turned toward his daughter... Who should have been his son's birthright for a great royal wife. He took his very young daughter as wife... I believe Nefertiti rationalized this behavior for a time, but as she grew it became apparent she would be great beauty. Increasingly she became the fixation of her father, the king's desire. I think this began to sit poorly with Nefertiti, and Increasingly became a source of strife between them. She came to perceive that she was wed to a monster, who heart filled with love to overflowing, was but love for himself. Clued into the depth of his secrecy, and the extent of the suffering he had premeditated for the people, she saw her options to be either turning against him and sparing the people who would be deeply grateful for this magnanimous and direly necessary decisive leadership... Which simultaneously would spare her children... salvaging from wreckage her families legacy and preserving their status as sovereign over the two lands. And the second option would be to sink along with him and go down as one big doomed family. She did what she had to and corralled his children away from him, leaving him to flee without family... only his priesthood, most prominent allies, and loyal soldiers. I guess you could say that really chaffed his gooch, and he determined to see her dead for her totally incomprehensible and inexcusable treachery.... It took a few years, but his assassins got to her.

@@robbrod4134 Read history. Jesus was born two thousand years ago in Palestine. This guy was born long before that in Egypt. The two aren't the same. I find it curious you'd speak of Tawhid in relation to Jesus PBUH,even though it's a Muslim concept. I digress, however. Tawhid means only ONE god. No connections. No manifestations. No different forms. No priests. No saints holding some miraculous spirit( except those Sufis think about it.). Just one god. Individual. Inseparable. Eternal. And absolutely not the Sun. He called himself the son and manifestation of the Aten. I think that counts as a break. He also demanded prayer for himself before the Aten. That also counts. Alright, this has gone for long enough. An explanation is due: The Aten, translated as the Sun Disk,is one of the many forms or depictions of the god Re-Horakhty,the most common depiction of Ra known in modern times, usually depicted as a man with a falcon's head and crowned with a sun disk. His depiction as the literal sun,the Aten, was not common for a long time, that is,until much later, with some pointing the beginning of such focus at the reign of Thutmose The Fourth. For example, Akhenaten's father and former namesake,Amenhotep The Third, was titled"the Magnificent Aten" in his later years, seen as an incarnation of the god. This may have lead to Akhenaten's more....expansive reforms, which included him as the only one capable of communicating with the Aten, espousing his own worship in the name of his divine father as the One True Priest and Son of the One True God. Whilst he did not deny the existence of other gods,he did worse in the eyes of the priesthood. He declared them irrelevant.

@@alyseleem2692 Not quite brother, The (Jesus) Christ actually takes this role (if you follow the trinity). Christians technically pray towards jesus who acts as the intermediary for god. The will of god must therefore be carried on through jesus, and it is through him that we can enact gods will on earth. But only though jesus himself. While what Akhenaton did was certainly a dash of real politik, if you accept the parallels to the Abrahamic God/biblical history, one could only describe Akhenaton as manifesting/experiencing/revealing the nature of Christ, especially considering how he calls himself the literal son, but still very subordinate towards Aten. The Trinity doesn't really come full force until the New Testament, but Akhenaton might be the first to understand the idea of the full Abrahamic god and therefore the Christ. What we see in him might have been a misinformed or perhaps revolutionary endeavor to become the son of the divine light. Or rather examine the relationship between this incredible and mysterious being and his creation, therefore the Pharaoh, Akhenaton would in a way make himself a sacrifice to enter communion with this new god, he would essentially replay the story of the Christ, and lose everything he worked for upon his death/murder(?).

@@hereisyoursign6750 Well,OK. If so,he follows your vision more closely. We,as Muslims, do not believe in Trinitarian doctrine. We believe God does not take human form or otherwise. We believe he is above manifestation. And to declare anything his manifestation is a gateway towards the more convulted paths of praying to saints and seeking favor in their name instead of God. Jesus, sadly,is no exception. He was born miraculously, but he is not divine. He is a miracle, but no God. Or representative. But I digress. These are my beliefs, not yours. The problem with Akhenaten's faith was that he,in your faith, would be closer to a false prophet, claiming to be the representative of the Aten and/or God. Or is there a place for him in the Trinity as well?

@@alyseleem2692 Again, Christ is technically the intermediary for god for Christians. Christ essentially does exactly what Akhenaton is attempting to do, represent the people of the land on behalf of god so as to incur his love rather than wrath. Obviously this doesn't work as he expected. Perhaps not Tawhid but from a (open minded) Christian perspective, Akhenaton could be among the most important exminations on the nature of Christ. Not Jesus, but Christ, an aspect of the trinity of god. While Akhenaton biblically is hidden, it was his experience with god and subsequent installation of Joseph and therefore Israel to rule Egypt in his name, that would spark Atenist persecutions after his death, and finally genocidal policies that prompted Moses to lead Israel out of Egypt for safety. Basically Akhenaton encountered the nature of god, and christ and literally went against his entire, ENTIRE society to facilitate worship.

@@hereisyoursign6750 Ummmm..... I'm unfamiliar with this narrative you're creating. First of all, who said that he installed Joseph to rule Egypt, let alone met the guy? Most people would say he came during the Middle Kingdom, whilst Moses came with the 18th dynasty in the New Kingdom. Generations after the fact. The only foreign rulers in the period are the Hyksos, and I assure you, they were defeated long before Akhenaten's birth. And they were most certainly not welcome. And why exactly would he be hidden? When a person tells you he is the Son of God, what do you usually think of? A cult leader. A heretic. A liar. If your Jesus is the One True Son Of God,who is this pretender and why should we give him respect instead of condescension for being foolish enough to try and represent the might of God in his ever so slight form?! Is the Aten your God or mine to begin with? No! He is an ancient Sun God,one of the most common archetypes of his age. A representation of Re-Horakhty. A pagan God. An image. An idol. Do you follow such idols? No? Then stop insulting yourself with this nonsense! Akhenaten knew nothing of the True God,and if he did,his blasphemy is tenfold in both my eyes and yours if you are truly faithful. If he knew God,he would know that his work wasn't what God demanded. Not even close. For who said God wanted to look like a sun disk? Did he know of Christ? Was the prophecy there when he was alive? No! First mentioned in the Book of Daniel, during the Babylonian Exile. The Son Of Man,crowned by the Ancient Of Days. A prophecy after the fall of Old Israel.
