Replacing animal agriculture with a plant based food system would solve so many problems and threats facing mankind! Why should each of us boycott meat dairy and eggs? 1-Your own health (vegans are less likely to get several deadly chronic diseases) 2-Helping to end animal agriculture would reduce the chance of another pandemic & other zoonotic diseases 3-Helping to end animal ag would reduce the chance of the development of an antibiotic resistant pathogen. 4-Animal ag wastes a huge amount of fresh water. Each vegan saves 219,000 gallons of water every year! 5-Animal ag is a major cause of water pollution 6-Animal ag is a major cause of deforestation 7-Animal ag increases PTSD and spousal abuse in the people who work in slaughterhouses. Workers in meat packing facilities often endure terrible, dangerous working conditions. 8-Animal ag is a major cause of the loss of habitat and biodiversity 9-Animal welfare, obviously 10- It is the single most effective way for each of us to fight climate change and environmental degradation. 11- Longer lifespan. 12- Healthier weight (vegans were the only dietary group in the Adventist Studies that had an average BMI in the recommended range.) 13- A healthy plant based diet significantly reduces the chances of ED later in life, and even 1 meal can improve bedroom performance 14- A plant based diet could save money! You could reduce your food budget by one third! 15- A vegan world would save 8 million human lives a year, and $1.5 trillion in health care costs (Oxford Study) Links for some of these are at my channel under "About." These diets are appropriate for all stages of the life cycle, including pregnancy, lactation, infancy, childhood, adolescence, older adulthood, and for athletes. Plant-based diets are more environmentally sustainable than diets rich in animal products because they use fewer natural resources and are associated with much less environmental damage. *Vegetarians and vegans are at reduced risk of certain health conditions, including ischemic heart disease, type 2 diabetes, hypertension, certain types of cancer, and obesity.* Low intake of saturated fat and high intakes of vegetables, fruits, whole grains, legumes, soy products, nuts, and seeds (all rich in fiber and phytochemicals) are characteristics of vegetarian and vegan diets that produce lower total and low-density lipoprotein cholesterol levels and better serum glucose control. These factors contribute to reduction of chronic disease. Human progress comes a lot from trial and error and unfortunately, this happens with legislation as well. Legislation can't stop these industries because a sufficiently big error hasn't happened yet, and lobbying is keeping these entities as confused as the general public is. So, no matter which industry we're talking about, it's incredible how a few humans (that already have enough money to buy their island and retire) prioritize killing the planet and future generations (their own kids as well), all for the sake of profit... Nature has been kind to us until now, but much like AI, this is one "trial and error" iteration we cannot afford to screw up. Good luck on the TED talk and hope you can add another dent in this madness.

Got a question on the 37% of protein / 40% of protein figures mentioned by the scientists - does that mean 40% of what we need or 40% of what we typically eat? We know that Americans at least eat ***WAY*** more protein than we need. If their figure represents the need and not the current demand, that would weigh more in her favor than just meeting demand. After all, just because there’s a demand, doesn’t mean we should automatically meet it (e.g., illicit drugs & cigarettes are good examples).

Very informative, thank you. In particular I appreciated the simple primer on CO2 and CH4 residence times and the meaning of GWP*. I haven't really been able to get my head around that before. Re the White Oaks/regen farming thing, there might not be enough land to do that at the scale at which we currently farm animals, but presumably if we down-scaled to a sustainable level and raised ruminants in that way, wouldn't the result be both a reduction in GHG emissions and benefits to the land? You did explain that this system does work on degraded lands, even if once rehabilitated the benefits cease to accrue beyond a stable level. In talking to farmers, the question of growing food sustainably and using ruminants to rehabilitate landscapes and to improve soils and water retention seem like solid benefits.

I really dislike Dr. Mitloehner, I would even go as far as calling him a hypocrite. I am of this opinion because of an interview he gave on the channel „What I‘ve learned“ (video title: „Eating less meat wont save the planet“). The video got over 1 million views and its clearly intentional misinformation. In the interview he states that removing all animals from US agriculture would reduce US ghg emissions by just 2.6%. He cites a study finding this but the assumptions that were made were literally unrealistic. They simulated that all the crop production for animals would still continue (while it wouldn’t be needed). Several other unrealistic assumptions were made. But they used it as if it was a realistic simulation. While there are tons of studies showing the real emissions.. To me this is completely unscientific and misleading and should result im a ruined reputation.

Missing from the discussion is the central matter of suffering of sentient creatures, i.e. cattle, chickens, fish. Ms. Buxton ignores this? Where is her moral compass?
@elbowroom36632 жыл бұрын
@Homie The only bona fide avenue to welfare reform argument is to stop consuming flesh-foods completely. Gary Francione is more eloquent than am I in making this argument. You can find him easily on youtube. There is no existence that in toto is devoid of injury to other life-forms, obviously plant-life when it comes to veganism. And, yes, there is an unintended loss of animal life with plant agriculture, but the inevitability of that in no substantive fashion undermines the argument for consuming a completely plant-based diet. Animal agriculture also subsumes plant agriculture for the production of animal feed, so the losses of life are simply multiplied.
@elbowroom36632 жыл бұрын
@Homie Well, we each can parse the meaning of our words how we each may prefer. Veganism and welfarism may have subtly different meanings to you and I or maybe massively different meanings. I perceive no need to get to fixated on that. In fact, you and I essentially may be on the same page. To the extent that plant agriculture can be devoid of the taking of sentient life depends upon the cultivator, of course. That is obvious. What also is at issue is the inadequately or at least incompletely answered question as to at which point among the array of living creatures does sentience arise. The other day I came across a very small ~1 1/4 inch, praying mantis. It turned its head and followed my face when I changed location. Do I know the mind of that creature? Am I in a position to conclude that its reaction was nothing more than a neural reflex? To be absolutely accurate the answer is that I don't know. And those who would quickly reply that the mantis isn't sentient display the sort of speciesism that has been the animal husbandry industry's stock in trade for as long as I can remember. So, don't underestimate my understanding of these matters. I have spent more time that you can imagine weighing theses issue. I'm 70 years old and have been practicing medicine for 40 years. I've seen some suffering.

Dear Chris, here is one book in desperate need of your incisive attention: "Why we eat (too much) by Andrew Jenkinson. I've watched all of your content and this oeuvre appear to have slipped through your nets. The premises appear, to some extent, to align with that of Teicholz, Taubes and co., albeit much better integrated with other, what appears to be, evidence based content. Could you please verify the claims made by the author? Thank you for all of your hard work!

Thanks Mikhail! Oh boy, I hate doing the debunking videos... Deep breath. But I know they are important and my subscribers like them, and if I don't, who will? I just thought I'd take a little break after episode 3 of Jayne Buxton's book to restore my faith in humanity, and to review a book or two I love, then maybe I'll tackle this. 😁

Is this 18% of our calories coming from animal products a global figure? The EAT-Lancet report says that globally we eat up to 8 times more animal meat than official guidelines and up to 90% less whole plants. So is most of our diet comprised of refined grains? And if the environmental problem is actually the fact that we feed those animals cheap grains, taking over the farmland and emissions, then we also need to cut back on monocultures. Considering that the plants we will replace the animal products with are less calorie dense and much less protein dense.

This video is essential! As a Brazilian I can attest that the deforestation is through the entire territory including natural regions and environments as the Cerrado, Atlantic Forest and the the Amazon. Also, it's important to emphasise that these disputes for land to agro business are responsible to the death of hundred natives and traditional populations. Anyone who cares about Human Rights should be against the practices of Brazilian agro business.

Can you make a video about a youtube channel "Goatis" and because it's very intriguing when it comes to veganism vs carnivore. Watch his video for example "Guy Eats Only Meat for 30 Days and Realizes That Veganism Is Garbage". And in the video called "Mia's Life: Vegan Teenager Has a Dangerous Influence on the Youth" He says at 6:50 that sweet potatoes don't contain vitamin A because it's an animal vitamin and can be only found in meat, particularly in liver and that her skin would clear up only if she starts eating more liver.
@eugenetswong2 жыл бұрын
Vegans living longer is proof that he misunderstands the significance of vitamin A. If I understand correctly, our bodies make vitamin A by "consuming" beta carotene.

I don’t understand why animal agro businesses are not starting to look into cultured meat as opposed to fighting against it. It is a cheaper alternative, and they wouldn’t have to keep as many people around to produce more meat. Yes that is heartless to the employees that would lose their jobs, but I am looking at this from the businesses point of view. They could sell off the excess land and reduce their work force. While at the same time making the same amount or even more meat. Or am I wrong here?

I believe that the single best thing you can do to help the planet is to give up eating PROCESSED FOOD. The processing of foods, the packaging, disposing of the packaging, the transport of foods and health care costs of trying to heal all the humans that become metabolically disfunctional be ause of eating processed foods and oils.

" I believe that the single best thing you can do to help the planet is to give up eating PROCESSED FOOD." It's definitely worse for the planet to eat processed foods than whole foods, but the research is very clear that the most important distinction is how much animal food you eat, especially ruminant meat.

Since the global growth of cattle farms also cuts more trees for monoculture of animal feed there is less 0², right? (Not to mention habitat destruction). The whole discussion about gwp and * are so scientific you can understand how "me" the people can be confused by what appears to be real data when it's really a different scientist's spin. It only takes one industry funded scientist 😐

It's super stupid to even argue methane. It's just stupid, nothing more stupid than argue methane's global warming effect. Methane changes into CO2. Of course we need to eliminate both. Stop CO2, and stop methane. The cows, the animals play a role in the environment. The role is not to restore soil; it is fucking stupid to argue cows restore soils. Cows are to stimulate grass growth... by eating them, and poop and pee on them. Overgrazing will not do the trick of course. Also it is shitly stupid to even say one cow takes hundreds of thousands of gallons of water to raise. Cows will poop and pee, and those are in term used by grass, filtered by soil, back to the aquifer. Of course useless if it's in a giant cattle farm, all poop and pee in one place, then it's a giant shit problem... Why even want to say cows are not necessary? Of course cows are not necessary. The issue is not even here. Of course soils can be rebuilt without cows, but need bacteria. Cows are bacteria factories, like many other animals, like the ones above the ground and the ones below the ground. I truly don't understand why the hell... so many problems in all these scientific... statements. You scientists truly need some serious... reflections...

I was just about to make my comment when I heard "greedy thirsty cows" and thought oh, he's about to cover it. But THAT is what is going to end the cattle industry. Water. Everything is drying up. Just watched a story about the Mississippi because I guess hearing about the Colorado is getting old. And although I think that in CA, the almonds are going to get the boot before Harris Ranch, it's just a matter of time.
