I just wanted to let you know that I’m someone who has been on the atkins/paleo/keto train for about 15 years. Always struggling in that time with weight issues that would go up and down. Energy issues that made me feel like I was on the least enjoyable rollercoaster. Despite all my adherence to the low-carb “science” and my religious dedication to you tubers like Dr. Berg, I found myself last year in the pre-diabetic range. Something just wasn’t working despite all the books and videos and advice - despite how perfectly I was following the low-carb rules. Something was wrong and needed to change. I let myself entertain the idea that maybe everything I was convinced would improve my weight and health was not only not working but could be making my health worse. That’s when I came across one of your videos and decided I had nothing to lose by trying a WFPB diet. Worst case scenario I would try it for a few months, fail, and be able to easily return to the safety of the keto camp. Twenty-five weeks in and I am no longer in the pre-diabetic range. I’m off the energy rollercoaster and am now on the most even energy ride I can imagine. My blood pressure is in especially healthy ranges (something that hasn’t been true since I was in high school). I’ve dropped 30lbs, but in a way that I’ve never experienced in any of the times I’ve lost weight on low-carb diets. Which is to say it has been slow and steady and feels natural. Unlike the weight I would lose on things like keto, where it would be sudden and in great amounts, followed by complete regains not long after. The weight is staying off. I feel even. I sleep better and I feel like my entire body has been rewired in terms of what it finds delicious and satiating. This is all to say that I’m grateful for the work you do. It very much set me on a path that I believe has made my future brighter, happier, and I hope longer. Thanks for that. 💖

I'd like to learn more as I've been thinking about an episode on Virta Health and I want to make absolutely sure I represent them fairly. What really bothers me is how they've published papers on their low-carb/keto program and after initial weight loss, the majority of their patients seem to drift back into type II diabetes or pre-diabetes, even while taking metformin. It seems that a lot of the anti-plant-based authors conflate Beyond Meat, Impossible Burgers, and other highly processed alternatives with whole plant-based diets. They say that those processed foods are unhealthy, therefore WFPB is unhealthy. If they want to talk about how these new meat alternatives are not the answer to health, I'm on board. But to use that to argue against a diet dominated by a variety of whole plants seems ill-informed at best and probably harmful.
@eugenetswong2 жыл бұрын
@Homie your comment reminds me of my recent noticing that mushrooms have been included as planted based. It makes me roll my eyes, but I think it is best to pause and wonder if it is worth trying to correct people on that.
@LittleRadicalThinker2 жыл бұрын
Beyond meats impossible foods are plant based, even Neal Bernard the ultimate vegan asks people to eat them to stop eating meats in his channel. I am sure some anti plant based authors will use the two big fake meat companies to defame the plant based diet, but are you sure you are looking at the whole thing they said?
@davidellis15502 жыл бұрын
It's hard to believe those people are good faith actors.
@ImprovingAbility2 жыл бұрын
They seem to believe that plant-based eating means burgers for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. I have a non-vegan friend who's a Scientific Writer and PhD Microbiologist and in all seriousness she too believes that fake meat is the only way people could make a plant-based diet work for them. The ignorance! The mind boggles!
@LittleRadicalThinker2 жыл бұрын
@Homie I think what I said is clear enough without ambiguity. The question is are you actually looking at the whole thing? Authors may not tell the truth or the whole truth, but their logic is still there. They must present a line of logic, from start to finish. In your statement, the author’s logic is not there.

Her (and other LDL and meds for it deniers) are SO dangerous for those with Familial Hypercholesterolaemia. This genetically high LDL can only be controlled with medication (hand in hand with a healthy lifestyle) and can be made considerably worse with even a moderate consumption of saturated fats. I work with the FH foundation, EVERYDAY newly diagnosed or newly in the hospital patients will still refuse medications and want to do keto because that’s what they saw on the internet. Kudos for significantly reducing your meat intake to the current level. Here is a list of reasons to consider boycotting animal products completely. 1-Your own health (vegans are less likely to get several deadly chronic diseases) 2-Helping to end animal agriculture would reduce the chance of another pandemic & other zoonotic diseases 3-Helping to end animal ag would reduce the chance of the development of an antibiotic resistant pathogen. 4-Animal ag wastes a huge amount of fresh water. Each vegan saves 219,000 gallons of water every year! 5-Animal ag is a major cause of water pollution 6-Animal ag is a major cause of deforestation 7-Animal ag increases PTSD and spousal abuse in the people who work in slaughterhouses. Workers in meat packing facilities often endure terrible, dangerous working conditions. 8-Animal ag is a major cause of the loss of habitat and biodiversity 9-Animal welfare, obviously 10- It is the single most effective way for each of us to fight climate change and environmental degradation. 11- Longer lifespan. 12- Healthier weight (vegans were the only dietary group in the Adventist Studies that had an average BMI in the recommended range.) 13- A healthy plant based diet significantly reduces the chances of ED later in life, and even 1 meal can improve bedroom performance 14- A plant based diet could save money! You could reduce your food budget by one third! 15- A vegan world would save 8 million human lives a year, and $1.5 trillion in health care costs (Oxford Study) Links for some of these are at my channel under "About." If you doubt any of them, I would be glad to cite evidence from credible sources to back them up. KZbin only allows a certain number of links at my channel.

I learned a useful term a while back, which is Gish gallop. Wikipedia defines it as "a rhetorical technique in which a person in a debate attempts to overwhelm their opponent by providing an excessive number of arguments with no regard for the accuracy or strength of those arguments." The term was coined by anthropologist Eugenie Scott and named for creationist, Duane Gish, who used the technique when trying to debunk established science. To me, this book just sounds like one long and tedious Gish gallop. Thank you for reading it so I don't have to. And thanks to you and your collaborators for providing necessary context and highlighting the actual, years long, careful and replicable science that we can and should rely on.

My Grandmother was Seventh Day Adventist. She, of course, forbade alcohol and cigarettes. She caught my Dad, as a grown man, smoking and I thought she was going to paddle him. She made him borrow long pants from an uncle when we visited with Dad wearing Bermuda shorts, but that's not why I am commenting... She had a huge garden, and ate mostly vegetarian, but also, dairy and eggs. She raised chickens and on occasion when a hen stopped producing that bird would end up in the veggie stew. She gave birth to 14 children, never even entered a hospital (she didn't trust doctors) and died peacefully in her sleep at the age of 92. My Dad passed at 93. I am in my mid-70's and have finally gone mostly plant-based with dairy and eggs with a fish sometimes. I am disgustingly healthy. I'm not giving up my occasional glass of wine though... Thanks for the work you do.

Hello, from Canada, Plant Chompers! 1) Thanks for the humour. 2) I'm really grieved that she blocked you. It's like our society can't have a regular conversation any more. I was blocked about a week ago, regarding racial issues. It was bizarre, because he didn't even really elaborate. Nobody was arguing or insulting, and yet he resorted to blocking. It seems so childish. 3) 7th Day A.: this section is very fascinating. I'm not a big supporter of them, but for political purposes, and apparently now for science purposes, I consider them similar to me in religion and diet. I had to listen to this section several times. It seems to you are summarizing her as saying that religion did not have the credibility to comment on diets and nutrition, but you conclude that she was trying to hide her agenda of raising interest and support for beef. 4) Qatar: this information is also fascinating. Thanks. 5) Relationships between 7th Day A. & meat eaters & beef industry & me: I find this to be the most fascinating part of the entire video, if not the entire channel. You mentioned the World Economic Forum, too. I follow video creators, who often talk about how good meat is. The things that they say will probably frustrate you and make your eyes roll. They have always portrayed Christianity, freedom lovers, beef creators, and beef consumers, in 1 camp, while World Economic Forum, vegans, communists, and dictators, are in the opposing camp. Yet, here you are giving me the impression that 7th Day A., and the WEF, are more likely to be aligned. I am genuinely shocked. 6) 9:57 You participated in the project as a researcher? Perhaps you were a lab rat type participant, which is what I try to do once per year on average to help out the local universities. 7) Debunking & being a jerk: your grandson right. Haha just kidding. I really appreciate that you seem to make no snide remarks about people, who disagree. Thanks for debunking for us, and taking on the suffering of making a debunk. I really appreciate this. I think that your channel is rock solid in authority. It really is hard to argue against Japan and 7th Day A. 8) Thanks for sharing footage of your visit to the academy. It's good to see the stuff and the kids having fun.

Thanks Eugene! Great feedback. I really don't know much about the religious side of the 7th Day Adventists, but I'm pretty fascinated by what they are doing with nutrition. I have to confess that I'm also fascinated that one of their cofounders - and the most influential one - was a woman. I'm spending a month in Finland, Estonia, Sweden and Denmark and it's fascinating that all their prime ministers are women, and I'm very curious about how it affects the way they govern. That same fascination spills over into my curiosity about the 7th DA. 🤷

8:29 People are in complete denial about the number of fish that are in lakes and rivers. My home country, Austria, EU, is the land of lakes and rivers and mountains. 83,871 km² in size, 62 lakes, 2,194 running waters, the total area of waters amounts to about 613 km². 8.8 million inhabitants, and a total output of-I estimate-8 million fish per year, from all sources combined, including lakes, rivers, fish farms and aquaculture. Production at full capacity is 3,200 tons of fish per year (industry focus on trout and carp). Consumption of fish, however, is approximately 63,000 tons. Numbers from WWF. These numbers don't add up at all. I cringe whenever I see advertisement to eat more fish, especially when they advertise domestic fish from lakes and rivers. The same math goes for countries like Vietnam, with its extremely polluted creeks, irrigation ditches and rivers. However, Vietnam has an enormous ocean front. Question is, will the math hold up with oceanic fish?

I sure hope you keep making debunking videos because you’re good at it. You have the background to know how to challenge the people twisting the science. Finally, your work probably infuriates the meat council shills since you always take the high road. That’s debunking done right. Keep it up, if you can.

Hey everyone here, Hey Chris, Thanks for sharing your emotions about debunking videos in the end 🤗. I have unfollow KZbinrs in the past, because of their strongly debunked content. I can't clearly explain it, but I could feel the toxicity stinks on my skin after their videos, even if I was finding 100% valid their scientific points and logical claims. On the other hand I felt so much connected to you and your family after an older answer video. Sharing feelings is key or maybe better to say that you have some magic debunk skills, Chris 😜 Anyway... I would like to share with you some thoughts about "our choices". Forgive me if I am a bit out of the video' s topic.. We tent to say that people have "the choice", about meat for example, people have the choice to eat meat or to not eat meat. But, wait a minute, what does it really means "choice"? I'm having the choice means that there are two things and I 'm capable to choose both and I am equally okay with both, Then I am free to choose. Imagine that it's freezing outside, you are not really choosing to take a coat, you need to. Now, imagine a woman who chooses to stay with her violent partner: "I can't leave him, I love him", is she really loves him? If she is co-dependent (and she is if she is staying) there is no much space for a choice. Somebody told me the other day: "I chose to throw away all my books. I won't read them, because I don't like books. There're people who like books and people who don't and I don't", hmmm interesting, I said nothing ofcourse, but I was wondering if she is capable of reading any book (remember! this is choice, you can do both things, you are okay with both and you choose one).... I' m sure you already got my point here. We live in the society of the choice illusion. There are no people who don't like books (books can be very beneficial and everybody wants that), there are people who never be in an environment where they could learn to read books. There are no human being who would choose sb violence, there are traumatized, co-dependent souls. There are no people careless for the environmental damage, there are people addicted to the western lifestyle. There are no people who are consciousness choosing animal products, there are people who have no real access to their food choices. They are hooked. Aren't you? What do you think? No, No! That can't be true. Ofcourse it's not. There are people who don't like books! End of the story! Ofcourse there are! Specially, if you feel ashamed of being unable to read, the "not like books" story is becoming veeeery attractive. And "love" is even more attractive, when you can't take responsibility of your inner self. Let's face it, there are thousands of very carefully logical reasons why we own a king's garderobe (always made in developing countries), produce tones of waste and overconsume energy. The good design reasons about meat and dairy isn't any surprise. After all, you choose, it's your choice and the blame is on you.... and the anxiety is all yours too. Rationalisation is a copy mechanism and the funny thing is that the smarter you are, the more intelligent the excuses you make, you have to believe them after all, that's their goal. All these claims and points about animal products, all these conversations and documentaries and talks even books (humph, made me exhausted), are they really believe what they say? Why would you even take the time to argue? These type of books provide no science, they give relief to humans repressed anxious. People don't change with arguments, people change when they take back the freedom of their choices. I changed when I shared a room and kitchen with a vegan, I didn't know I had access to an alternative choice before that 😁🤘. In the first video of these series, I wasn't feeling sharing these thoughts, because they're kinda missing the point. These thoughts apply to ordinary people and this was, obviously, one conflict of interest case. Although, all came back to my mind after Buxton's insulting tweets 😅

You have THE BEST content. Thank you so much for the high quality videos. Question for you: My diet is a whole food plant forward diet and I’m really trying to go 100% plant based but I keep oscillating between 100% plants and 90% plants with some fish and chicken. The hurdles for me is my high exercise output and keeping my protein input high so that I do not lose the strength and muscle I have and so that I continue to progress my level of fitness (I do a mix of 8 hrs cardio, 6 hours heavy resistance training, and lots of walking every week). The issue I find with getting all my protein from plants is that my fiber intake shoots through the roof and causes me digestive upset and bloating. For instance, I easily eat 3 servings of legumes, 2 servings whole grains, enormous amounts of vegetables, nuts, and tofu or tempeh, and I still an under my protein requirements. So then I bump my legume intake and my fiber intake ends up sitting at like 100g/day which is well over double the RDI. I dislike taking supplements like protein powder so I end up gravitating towards small amounts of fish or chicken. Any advice? Or maybe this would make a good topic for a future video? Take care and thanks again for the wonderful content (:

That's a really good question, Michael. The honest answer is I'm not sure and I'm not certain anyone is. The exercise physiologists tend to err on the side of plant based protein powder. I did an episode or two about that: kzbin.info/www/bejne/gJulpoeYdpiLorM My issue with protein powders is I haven't seen the effect in me and some of the studies and I wonder if they don't end up just being empty calories. Fish, on the other hand, has nutrients plants don't have like DHA and EPA, plus astaxanthin. So my inclination would be to eat a little fish, but honestly we're seeing a lot of world class athletes at the top of their sports just eating whole plants and some of them, supplementing with protein powder.
@GlennMarshallnz2 жыл бұрын
Hi Michael, simple solution, dial back the exercise a bit. Humans have not evolved to do the level of exercise you do. For 300,000 years we roamed (walking), with short bursts of speed. We didn't pump iron, which requires significant protein to restore broken down muscle fibre. It's like you are a racing car doing high km's per day and then are concerned with the amount of petrol needed to keep the car going.

It’s really interesting to see this. Instead of taking things from each other and Learning. Diet culture is almost like a battleground. To proof who’s diet is the best. And why the other side is wrong. Really reductive because the topic of diet is subjective to begin with. There will never be the one true diet to rule them all.

You don’t like making debunking videos and I don’t like watching them :-) I wonder who the heck can we believe. The struggle for the uninformed is enormous. Some of my friends who are quite educated just can’t believe any of the truths that I tell them. They all just want to believe what they want to do is OK. And they search on KZbin until they find some crap that’s not true so they can believe and keep on doing what they do :-) thank goodness for you :-) your channel needs lots more followers. Stay strong and keep fighting. Your message is being heard.

Hi Chris, firstly I wanted to say that I absolutely love your videos and, as a plant-based Humanities student, it is so wonderful to have a scientist to turn to for the hard data on the environmental, ethical and health impacts of plant-based eating. I know that you hate debunking videos so my suggestion is not for more debunking, but to hear your perspective on George Monbiot's new book "Regenesis: Feeding the World Without Devouring the Planet". I loved it and found it very interesting and enlightening, but I am not an earth scientist and would love to hear the earth science perspective on all he writes about soil. Thanks for all you do here, educating with both humour and hard facts!
