Rock climber here. Lead climbers are endurance guys, but boulderers are explosive athletes who train a lot in max effort climbing lifts. We tend to have strong fingers and shoulders, but biceps not as strong as you'd think, and our cup strength is rarely exceptional because most climbing grips have the wrist bent slightly back

Biceps would gas out very quickly while fingers can last for a very long time. Rock climbers are usually very small guys probably the 160 lbs weight class, which means their muscles are probably small, just good finger strength an endurance, there is no carry over to arm wrestling.

@@scottgsarmwrestling4639 there are three primary types of climbing. Bouldering, lead, and speed climbing. The only ones with the great endurance are the lead climbers. Speed climbing is a 49ft wall that they climb in like 6 seconds. Pure explosiveness. Boulder routes are usually 5-10 moves across 16-20ft wall. These are high strength moves, not just for fingers, but for shoulders, chest, lats, abs. A boulderer would have quite a bit of carry over strength. You're not getting through their fingers, they'll have a great lat drag, and they'll have at least some integrity in their UCL for side pressure. When I got into arm wrestling, I did a lot better than the average 160lb beginner. Of course there's tons to learn and build from there, but there is crossover

@@realkylehooks Fellow climber friend here, i was looking forward to type a comment like that but to my big surprise you already did it and Larry even pinned you! But if i can add something to your comment is that indeed most of the climbers are really slim, if you think about Megos and Ghisolfi, and even Schubert, thery are barely more than 50kg (110 lbs), even ondra is like 72 (160 lbs)... not a lot for armwrestling, and in bouldering (which you mentioned it) it pretty much the same, i think Woods is more or less around 70 kg. I tryed a little bit of armwrestling myself but i'm a lead climber and far weak for a sport so explosive, also a proper climber would NEVER be able to do both sports at the same time due to injury and pain in general...

John’s point about baseball players is so true. In high school I beat a 290 pound lineman like it was nothing then lost to a baseball friend of mine who arm wrestled and he had the strongest hand/wrist I’ve ever felt

It makes perfect sense. Baseball players train their forearms, they have strong UCLs from the stress of throwing, and they train their shoulders and lats. A well trained baseball player would basically just need to add a little specific brachialis and biceps training to get their body prepared.

Awsome Interview ,Thank u Larry for Pushing this great sport into the spot light . and kudos to the Man himself JB… have a story to share : so once i was heading into this Cigar place to get couple of Sticks for later . to my surprise there was an Arm wrestling tournament happening right there and then . i was able to sign up …….half an hour later ,it all started . about 60-70 participants of all shapes and sizes … I had to do 4 matches ..as i always do in Arm wrestling Im very technical,and i know all the tricks . i know if i could beat someone by just a handshake .. eventually i wrestled my way to the final match ……and boom, i beat the last Man standing. i Won it all . what was exciting is i had my family with me ..my kids couldn’t believe it . heck i couldn’t believe it myself ….it definitely was a non forgettable day in march/2015. loved this sport since i was 9 years old ….still do , and i still like to just tease a friend or family member into a quick table bout lol. yes its all about tendons, technique and mental strength

also AWs competition (of almost any sports actually) is way more demanding physically now than 30 years ago so i agree, there will never be anyone else that remains undefeated for 20+ years in official competitions, but that's not because they're worse armwrestlers, simply because it's 10 times harder to do it starting today.

Speaking of the greatest... John's old training partner Dave Patton won 35 world titles in 15 years of armwrestling, pulling in various weight classes. Afterwards, he went into martial arts, became a black belt instructor, and won gold medals in various Gracie jiu jitsu tournaments in the early 2000's. A real legend of combat sports. He lives in VA now and would be a great guest, Larry. You can contact him through the Gracie Academy.
