The Greatest Chess Game Of All Time Explained - Kasparov vs. Topalov, 1999

Can there ever be a consensus when the word "Greatest" is used? The chess world is pretty unanimous that Garry Kasparov's 1999 victory against Veselin Topalov is the greatest chess game of all time. Kasparov offers two rook sacrifices and succeeds in evicting Topalov's king from its drafty castle.
Lessons:
Defending dubious openings can be a risky proposition.
The defender's task is usually harder.
You should be optimistic when you can separate your opponent's king from his forces.

One of the videos I keep watching after short periods of time, and wish I could click 👍 again. Also makes me hope a new video gets uploaded again, as this is one of the best chess channels.

3D is much better, and certainly more in the spirit of real OTB play.

I appreciate these videos so much. There are so many other videos on these games, but I find them difficult to follow because they move through the openings so quickly and often don't take time to explain why certain moves are made. For a higher intermediate/advanced player that may be fine, but for a lower intermediate player I still struggle sometimes to understand why certain moves are made over others (especially in openings), and this type of analysis is exactly what I want. And the way you explain the really important moves makes it easier for me to see the "beauty" in chess. I hope to see some more of these videos in the future! Thanks!

Havlicek's steal in the 1965 NBA semi-final was the greatest basketball play of all time, Banks' save against Pele in 1970 was, in Pele's own words, "the greatest save by the greatest goalie I have ever seen", Mays' catch in the 1954 World Series was the most famous catch, Bily Cannon's punt return against ole' Miss on Halloween Night in 1959 was the greatest punt return, and the greatest defensive play in the history of the Rose Bowl was when Bob Stiles knocked himself unconscious keeping "The Samoan Bull", Mike Apisa out of the endzone to preserve UCLA"s "impossible victory" against two-touchdown favorite, "perfect" Michigan State in 1966. Similarly, THIS is the greatest chess game, ever.

Many thanks for great analysis but very difficult to follow with the hideous 3D board. The problem (apart from it just being a silly gimmick) is that the far side of the board is tiny and hard to see. The 2D board gives equal size to all pieces and all parts of the board - so much easier to see.

I think the pieces could be a little different from one to another, mainly the bishop and queen. It is very difficult to see clearly. Maybe some colors or details could fix that.

From someone who knows nothing about the game... wasn't Rook to D1 a valid move for Topalov?
@brunilda
@brunilda 3 жыл бұрын
At the end? Not really because the white king will go to c2 and then capture the pawn in c3 and black has no threats anymore. That queen vs rook with symmetric kingside pawn structure would be technically a breeze for Kasparov

only the second game i have viewed and already am disappointed with myself for finding fault, if you watch your own vid's again you might see how repetition occurs even when it is actually required 'no cure well done.wish i could go back in time and follow you instead. but have seen so many games myself that repetition makes for less desire.

Well, it's certainly a great game. But Kaspy is not my favorite player. I think most people would choose the best game of their favorite player as the best game ever. So, I must disagree courteously, and respectfully.

@Oissev Onos I've been loving Leela lately. But originally my favorite player was Bobby Fischer. Then, for awhile, maybe longer, it was Alekhine. I like Sam's favorite player, Tal, too. But I guess I'll never really get over Morphy and the Opera House game.
