The Greatest Depiction of Denial

Tokyo Ghoul is a pretty well-known & popular story thanks to it’s top tier protagonist, Kaneki Ken. Kaneki Ken is a character who goes through multiple stages of growth & evolution as the story of Tokyo Ghoul progresses & thanks to this, there tends to be much discussion around these different Kaneki’s & their characters throughout the community. Leading up to the final act of Tokyo Ghoul Re, Kaneki goes through 5 stages of growth that represent the 5 stages of grief. Denial, Anger, Bargaining, Depression, and Acceptance. But there’s one stage of growth that I see get almost no discussion whatsoever. This is the original Kaneki Ken, or in other words; Kuroneki, the representation of denial. In this video, I intend to speak about the original Kaneki & do a bit of analysis on his character in order to explain why I think that he’s much better than a lot of people give him credit for. As most people seem to just write him off. With that said, if you enjoy content such as this… don’t forget to leave a like & subscribe, and let’s get into it.

The twist of Kaneki's mom being abusive is some of the most depressing and mind twisting reveals in manga. Tokyo Ghoul's best writing revolves around the psychological aspects. He talked positively about his mom so much in the beginning of the series, which makes sense when you realize that abused kids still love their parents and often blame themselves for the abuse. It also makes a pacifist-type MC like him much more nuanced. He chose peace based on the idealized version of his mom he wanted to become like. His shift to violence wasn't abrupt because his time with Jason wasn't the first time he had endured abuse, and those that grow up abused tend to repeat the cycle. So throughout the story he's struggling and making an active effort to not become abusive and violent himself, which someone who has experienced what he has is more inclined to. The duality between sympathy and violence is why I think he could relate to the ghouls. They too didn't choose their circumstances yet are punished just for existing. He didn't ask to be born but his mother punished him for being a burden on her. So many layers to this story.

What I love about Kaneki’s selfish nature is that he most definitely got it from his mom based on the background info we have and his actions. Her failing to choose between her son or sister, opting to work through it in an attempt to keep both just to die. Kaneki experiencing that literally developed the foundation for his beliefs and goals. The countless times trying again and again to be the one to brunt the damage all for the purpose of not being alone is just tragic and beautiful.

bro, i genuinely have nothing but praise for you. Every other youtuber like Sufferents or Chibi Reviews that has made TG 'analysis' videos usually does nothing more than summarize the story or make surface level points. You might be the only person on this platform doing justice to TG and Ishida's writing with your analysis videos.

cant agree enough with everyone else in the comment section of this video asking for more content on tokyo ghoul, it's not been long since i finished the manga and ive loved watching your videos going back over the series and analysing it at a deeper level. i originally found your channel from videos youd make on jujutsu kaisen and enjoyed some here and there, but when i read tokyo ghoul on a whim and massively enjoyed it, i found your channel again this time covering tokyo ghoul content, and remembered i enjoyed your previous videos and i enjoyed these tokyo ghoul ones even more. please keep making content like this

In my opinion I loved reaper Kaneki he was depressed and just accepted that he must kill ghouls his own kind he was fully aware that he was the eye patch ghoul he was the most mentally stronger version of kaneki as he wouldn’t think twice when it came to fighting he later changes when Hinami will be executed by the way he is aware on who she is and the rest of the ghouls he meets this is still him he has regained his memories but he becomes cold instead do caring until he has his fight with Arima anyways I just wanted to point out the reaper kaneki is by far the coolest

Love the Tokyo Ghoul content. Just curious if you’re still working on that Furuta video? He’s such a weird characters that many people today still kind of confuse his ideals and goals between the Nihilism and envy/love between him and Rize, etc, etc. Curious to what you’ll post about him. Also a Mutsuki video would be sick too.

Kaneki was in constant denial about what dreadful person his mother really was. Who knows if the story about his aunt who neglected him is even true. We only know his side of the story. Maybe Kaneki was the one who killed his mother and convinced himself and others it was a ghoul assault. One thing is clear, Kaneki was a mess even before he became a ghoul.
@legionprime7715
@legionprime7715 Ай бұрын
I do genuinely think he was a victim to his mother’s abuse, primarily due to the fact there’s another character who’s the opposite side of the same coin to Kaneki. The person you’re unknowingly referring to is Mustuki. She’s a character that parallels well with Kaneki in a sense that they both handled their familial situation/abuse differently. Kaneki took it all in, he blamed himself for being a burden, weak. He coped with his mother’s anger by blaming himself and painting her in a different picture, cognitive dissonance. Mutsuki on the other hand lost it. She tried her best but succumbed to her anger and legit killed her entire family.
@Atticus-Catnipp
@Atticus-Catnipp Ай бұрын
@legionprime7715 I wasn't referring to Thoru specifically, I just wanted people to remember that Kaneki was never normal aside from ghouls who try to survive. In this world humans are worse than ghouls, what happened to Yamori is the result of humans. So Kaneki is rightfully a tradegy on two legs in both human and ghoul world. As the story began, he was a anxious little boy who'd read books all day with just one friend. That is either an autism or a trauma.
@legionprime7715
@legionprime7715 Ай бұрын
I do agree that he isn’t “normal” in a sense that he was lonely and introverted, but I just don’t really see him adding up to being some sort of a monster to likes of Tokage or Shiki. I personally just don’t see it due to his self-sacrificing nature throughout the story. I think his tragedy on the human side really just came down to his loneliness, lack of purpose and trauma stemming from his mom.
@Atticus-Catnipp
@Atticus-Catnipp Ай бұрын
@ his Self-sacrificing nature is what broke his neck or skull at the end of Tokyo ghoul. He went out on a suicide mission to save the employees of antique if he could have just survived and run away with Toka. His pathological fear of loneliness and purpose drove him to being defeated by Arima. Haise is just another attempt to run away from the inevitable reality of being broken to the core as Kaneki really is.

I rarely ever leave comments on any KZbin video, just a quick like and subscribe at most to support. I’ve been subscribed for a while after taking a liking to the JJK chapter reviews and everything else related. When the series ended I was curious in which direction the channel would’ve went and I’m personally extremely happy to see that you’ve chosen Tokyo Ghoul as an interest for it. Definitely one of my favorites series and one of the few that helped pushed me from being anime only to reading manga aswell. Regardless, I think your videos are great overall and regardless of whatever series you’ve decided to cover, I would’ve stuck around anyway. I’m just happy we’re diving into one of my favorites. Such a win-win for me personally.
