One of my favorite parts of Fool Us is seeing the sparkle in Penn and Teller's eyes when they genuinely get fooled and get to for a brief moment experience magic.

Similar to when Daniel Madison was on and revealed he performed his magic in a way that would be obvious to see from their perspective. He said he knew he would get more exposure by them "outing" him if you will then by fooling them I feel Dani may have been doing something similar here.

@TheSportsGuru Well yeah. Dude is a grandmaster, doesn't mean guys on his level won't give others a peak by doing stuff on purpose so you catch some of it and think then you got the trick, but it's not it, it's just what he wanted you to see. Which is what Chris is saying in some of his commentary. Dani is several levels above everybody and his techniques are unapproachable by most magicians, let alone non-magic types.

The best thing about this performance is that it wasn't even supposed to happen. Bear in mind that Dani is not a public performer, his entire career now is teaching other magicians; he doesn't appear on TV, he doesn't do live shows - he's an educator. So Dani didn't apply to be on Fool Us, he was just there that day to support a friend who was due to perform. Mike Close saw him and knew who he was and, according to Penn, practically begged Dani to perform something for the cameras. Dani agreed, and that lead to the clip we're all watching right now. Consider for a moment how truly insane this is. The best performance that has ever been shown on Fool Us was a totally impromptu trick from someone who wasn't even supposed to be there, and it nevertheless blew the roof off the theatre and left both Penn and Teller utterly speechless (or in Teller's case, involuntarily speechless.) Dani is hands down the greatest card magician who ever lived!

Appreciate the discussion. I can also confirm Dani was on the Fool Us set helping another magician when the producers begged him to come on and do *something.* This performance is absolutely an example of a very high level of mastery disguised as random chaos (sort of a "Drunken Master" style). It's true it was mostly "impromptu" in the sense he didn't know what he would do leading up to the ending, though he knew he would end with The Ritual. But of course, being a master magician Dani can just "wing it" the way a great jazz musician "wings it" when he jams. I saw Dani do something similar a few years back with 5 borrowed decks at a magic convention; that time, he destroyed a room full of some of the most elite card magicians on earth. For me, one of the many pleasures of this clip is watching Alyson -- who has seen a LOT of magic over the last 10 years -- also be completely enchanted and gobsmacked by Dani.

I like how he uses his “poor English” as part of his act with them; I’m no magician but it seems to me that he was using that as a bit of misdirection even though his English was clearly understood by me and I have bad hearing. I dunno if it’s all an act or if that’s truly who he is, but his personality during this video makes him seem like he is not only friendly and kind, but a blast to be around. I think he’s the guy at the dinner table that has every guest choking on their food and drinks from laughter.

Strange that nobody caught the fact that Dani told Donnie Osmond to pick a number between 1-20 and Donnie thought he would be cute and picked twenty ONE and Dani STILL crushed his mind. How did nobody pick up on that? Donnie was doing everything he could to try and mess him up. From grabbing the cards at the start, saying it was an incomplete deck, grabbing at the cards in the middle of the trick, to choosing a number outside the range he was given. AND IT DIDN'T FREAKING MATTER. Dani STILL tore his mind to shreds. LOL

This comment reminds me of chess, in a game you will miss something in a position, but if someone gives you that exact same position and says "mate in 3 white to play" you have context, not a "lesson" or "giving something away" just a subtle nod to say.. maybe, look at that again. You know now, something is happening, figure it out. You still may not but that's part of the fun.

5 or 6 years ago I watched him teaching a trick somewhere, and he was so good to the point where he was making two versions of the presentation depending on wether the spectator is a regular or a magician.. and that trick was even better to preform to a magician. Dani does create an actual magical feeling inside when you watch him work. I genuinely felt like a kid again, it was wondrous. What I love is how completely NATURAL and relaxed his magic is. I really hate seeing magic where the magician grips the deck tightly and does awkward moves covering the cards and it just feels so stilted and bleh. I watched Dani's act and for the first time thought "I don't want to know how this is done because I choose to believe we witnessed real actual magic'. I also love how much psychology and mentalism goes into his performance, but it doesn't look like mentalism. It's perfect. His verbal skills, his crowd control, his doing small things in off-beat moments. Absolutely wonderful. And finally, the appearance of chaos. The effect isn't chaotic, but the way the cards are messy and are thrown around, it looks like even Dani doesn't know where the cards are but he somehow wills the cards to be in the right place when the time is right. Superb.

I am Canadian, so you know what i'm about to say is sincere. I was nervous at the start of the video, because I thought a man that I admire and respect, was about to do a "How the sausage is made" magic revealed video. What I got was two-fold in that I got an "appreciation" video from a subject matter expert, and treated to some amazing magic! I have been a deliberate "Interested Observer" type of spectator since my youth reading up on Houdini and other magic types. I refuse to partake, because I don't want to lose the wonderment of it all, that I have had since my childhood. Again, was worried this video was going to do that, instead I am going away amazed and Thankful to our host. Keep doing what you do and ignore the urge to "go do photography" . . you're where you need to be ! Nicely done my friend! Great Vid !!!!

@@markedly1013 They knew some parts for sure. Penn saw the deck when that Donny fool checked it, and it's pretty certain that if Teller was looking for it he would have seen the card loaded onto the top of the deck. Small other parts are obvious (but just little flourishes for the audience really). For the main trick Dani has at least six methods (and possibly as high as twenty!) so they'd just be guessing at one or the other, as they didn't catch it, and that isn't really fair. Basically they knew what was going on, but they didn't know exactly how, plus quite a lot of the routine is amazing 'Jedi mind tricks' (Dani must have multiple back-up ideas if any of these failed) - and they can't bust him on that!

I saw a Lecture by Dani and it's incredible something very interesting he says, is that he plays this character and sells it really well where he is just as confused and astonished by his own effects, which makes the audience mirror them. Adding that element of controlled chaos, really makes you think for a seconds that maybe he truly doesnt know whats happening either. Ergo his constant " I don't know how. . . but"

I agree 100% with your comment that Dani has surpassed Juan and is now probably the best card magician of all time. Was so glad and excited when I saw his name pop up on the show. So intelligent and just makes everything he does look so easy. Beautiful to watch him perform and just control all aspects of everyone around the table. Amazing. Also I enjoyed your reaction video and agree not something to do often over all the episodes to date I can think of maybe 1-2 other performances truly worthy of reacting too like this but I don’t know. This performance was just so pure.

Great video, thank you! I'm not a magician but I have great respect for the art and I love to be fooled. I've watched a lot of magic over the years and that's the greatest card magic I've ever seen, hands down. And his likeable personality and charm makes a phenomenal performance even more enjoyable. I would absolutely pay to watch this gentlemen perform live. Loved every second of it. I also appreciated watching this through a professional magicians eyes, so thank you for that as well. Made me appreciate it even more if that's possible.

Dani is the GOAT 🤯. It's really cool watching someone as good at card magic (or magic in general) as you, Chris, react to someone as amazing as, Dani 🤘. You can almost feel your excitement and it's contagious 😁🤘. Great video - thanks so much for sharing 🙏.

It's still as fascinating, if not even more so, watching him perform again and again. I loved your reaction and what you told about the show!

@@szolanek I did not say such thing. When I said "secrets" I was thinking of both sleight of hand and psychology handling, just in case that part was not clear. You can read "libertad de expresión" (freedom of expression) or watch Utopia (I think it's the 3rd DVD) for more info on this.

@@ciscou I see, forcing to name a card is technique.(?) It is beyond my imagination.... Actually, by the last one, Alison did weird things. At first, she thought a card without hesitation. It is not normal. Also, when she had to say it out, her eyes were turning to the upper right corner, as she was making it up now, instead of the left, where our memory is located. If you ask a person about what happened, and looks to the right ... lying.

Chris, thank you for doing this. I’ve been a fan of Penn and Teller since they did a bit on SNL where Teller just walked like it was 1920 and lit a cigarette. Then they redid it from the other angle and Penn described how every ordinary move was, in fact, brilliant slight of hand. They proved that they weren’t out there to “do magic”, but to demonstrate the ART of magic. They did the cups and balls with clear cups, AND explained the trick, AND it was 10x better than anything else I’d ever seen, because I was amazed at the cleverness but also the SKILL behind it. Dani’s card handling is so brilliant here, and SUCH a joy - but hearing your own commentary and adoration made it that much better because it helped me appreciate, again, the incredible skill and joy behind slight of hand, and that joy is always welcome.

Chris, Great Job, you brought out some very important Points for all of us to remember. The Magic is not the Slight, the lift or about any move. The magic was all in how he kept the entire audience and those at the table laughing the whole time. I noticed in almost every performance I've seen with Dani is that the audience is always laughing because "He's always laughing. " I don't know if that is part of the act or perhaps Dani is a joyful person himself at heart. In any case, he's really Phenomenal. When you watch that trick it's as if all the magic is just happening by accident. Brilliant!
