im so happy these films are getting the recognition they deserve. theyre some of the best things ever and probably the magnum opus of both shiraishi and the found footage genre. i hope it was my comment on the first iceberg vid that got you to watch them and i really hope this video gets more people to watch them. the seventh entry (Final Chapter!) is by far my favorite and I love how it gives Shiraishi a chance to shine as an actor. its also worth noting that a bunch of Shiraishi's other films might be a part of the same multiverse as this series, since the cameraman character from this shows up in A Record of Sweet Murder and Kudo shows up in a bunch of stuff (theres other connections but that's just off the top of my head). also the worms in noroi might be connected to the worms in this, but maybe shiraishi just likes worms.

I am so, so happy for the Twin Peaks season 3 episode 8 shout-out. I often tell people that my favorite film isn't a film, it's that particular episode of Twin Peaks, particularly for how it ties the series together while still being an incredibly surreal Eraserhead-style art piece all its own. The visuals are unforgettable, but it also feels like Lynch really bringing together his affinity for the weird and his storytelling prowess. It's definitely a career summarized in the length of a single episode, and to me it felt like Lynch's entire career had led up to that episode and the finale.

I LOVE the Senritsu series! It is so good to see people finding it and enjoying it. I wish I could give the director/writer much money so I can get the blu ray set of Senritsu. It is so wacky but there were moment that made me jump or freaked me out (the first one with the slit mouth lady...that end bit, shivers down my spine!) I watched them in order as there is an over arching story, but wow I wish I could watch them again. Kudo is a great character, that man punches first asks questions later. You can tell these films are made with such love and passion. I found out about them through Trevor Henderson, and I hope more people watch it thanks to you Nyx. It's so good.

The stylistic CGI was one of my favorite parts of Occult. It made me laugh so hard when people criticized it for being "unrealistic" like I'm sorry, how would you personally depict a nightmarish realm of flesh-eating worms and jellyfish creatures. How can you make that realistic. What is the source material for Worm Hell. No fun allowed I guess

YES I took a Japanese Cinema course in college and we covered Occult as one of our films! It was one of my favorites, and when I had the opportunity to cover any japanese film i wanted I chose to watch another one of his films, A Record of Sweet Murder. Just outstanding films, it's rare to find art that sticks with you for so long after seeing it.

May!! I remember not too long ago the comments were begging you to watch Noroi and now here you are casually pointing me to a Shiraishi Koji series I haven’t been able to find to rewatch in years❤ I love his stuff so much, he is so unfettered by convention and even with little to no budget he has a way of creating images that really stick with you. (Occult’s “It’s hell!” ending still gives me the heebies-like, are the visuals cheesy and dated? Sure, but it’s still some of the most effective cosmic horror I’ve ever watched.) I am so happy you’re a fan, and I’m psyched you want to do a full series on Senritsu Kaiki. Can’t wait!

Huh. The few seconds of footage May posted at the beginning immediately made me think: That reminds me of the movies that the director of Noroi did before he made Noroi. And it turns out I was right! He's an odd duck (in a good way), and his movies have a very recognizable vibe.

I'm friends with some big Koji Shiraishi fans and I'm pretty sure I've watched this last year in some way shape or form.. Maybe I didn't see all of it but certainly some of it. And Koji uses those characters in a whole bunch of movies and shows too, and there's a lot of his early work that ties in to stuff that happens as well. it's like it's own little Marvel universe of Japanese ghosts. I might be getting this confused with Welcome to the Occult Forest, which I think was also a series but maybe re-edited into a movie? So confusing. But after watching a whole bunch of his films and tv shows I do see a lot of patterns and his particular style come through.
@SeaJayLYКүн бұрын

EDIT: But also, with regard to "making sense", a prof I had in grad school turned me on to Reinaldo Arenas, a queer cuban writer from way back who 100% says making sense can go to hell and it is glorious, a true visionary.

So Sugisawa Village had a sign warning you not to go further as there's no guarantee of your life if you do. It's abandoned and you could lose your mind there. Inkuki village has a sign saying the laws of Japan don't apply here. There seem to be two stories, one you go there, you die because the residents will kill you. Two you get a call that curses you, you get transported there, lose control of body and mind and die. This makes me think more of the first story.

im glad more people are experiencing things that lead to this revelation. i feel like it was one of the most important things i learned from a piece of art, making compromises for the sake of legibility is .. i guess useful in some contexts, but its neutering in a way, i think once you make too many appeals to the culture you exist in so that others can understand it youre diluting like most of your creative vision. you might be understood anyway. the thing that did this for me was writing, done by two people between themselves with no concessions to a future audience, and it was barely followable, but i was like, ah, damn, this is what its all about
