They don't pay qbs based on what they've currently achieved. They pay them based on how good they think they will be in the (near) future. The Packers believe that Love will be yet another great qb for the Packers. We shall see. As a Cowboy hater, I'm loving this and I hope that they sign Dak to a massive contract because I'd hate to risk the 'boys ruining their 'great in the regular season and crapping the bed in the playoffs' thing they got going. This was a horrible contract for the Packers and it will ruin the franchise for many years to come. Love is an average, not great quarterback, and it makes zero sense to throw MVP like money at a quarterback like that. They could literally sign Jake Browning of the Bengals for dirt cheap and get the same level of production. It will be very hard for the Packers to sign free agents now that their salary cap is shot. The Packers will be a mediocre team for the next decade. Gutekunst is borderline criminal for how he mismanaged the greatest franchise in NFL history and he needs to be fired.

@america1st721 Have you seen what bad QB play looks like? The problem isn't that they're garbage. It's that they're good, getting paid like they're elite. There's only one QB that's worth elite money. Maybe 2 with Stroud. Everyone else is getting overpaid, either because they're injury prone, or they're just not elite. But that's the market, and until one team has the stones to let their guy walk and replace him, this'll just keep getting worse.

@ch.3569 exactly, but everyone is giving them shit... I think it's a great idea. Look how poorly these rookie QBs do in general if they can't sit and learn. Not everyone is CJ Stroud or Mahomes or Herbert (since he also broke records in his rookie year) or Brady (that's obvious though) Penix has the blocks bit his structure needs some building who better to learn from if not Brady or Brees etc. Cousins kept the Vikings competitive in that division for a while. And Vikings have no-one set up. They're relying on journeymen and a rookie. I don't like their chances. Green Bay uses a smart model. So smart move by the Falcons.

4:52 Mike makes the argument for his formula then gives three examples where it didn't work. Only Philly even came close with Jalen. Mahomes is probably the best example of carrying a clipboard. Brady didn't start his rookie year either. Young also sat behind Montana, who started his career behind Steve DeBerg. Since the start of the rookie wage scale in 2011, the only teams that have actually been successful following this "strategy" are the 2017 Eagles who drafted Carson Wentz (but won the SB with Foles) and the 2019 Chiefs.

Obviously I'm not a GM but as a fan I'm never excited to see big contracts since it can effect the team, but it seems like this contract is front loaded. Since everyone is on rookie deals right now its possible, then down the road in 2-3 years it will still be affordable to retain core players. Personally I have a good feeling about Love so here's to another 15 years. I'm sure the jets are already writing loves contract for 2038.

I understand why the Dolphins’ model is attractive when a young cheap QB has great weapons around him, but when you have to finally pay them, suddenly you can’t afford those great weapons anymore and you’re stuck paying nearly as much for a QB you don’t really believe in. And Love already has more playoff wins than Tua.

Packer fan here. I think the Packers should have traded Rodgers to Denver, taken a lot of draft picks and a couple players, and put Love in as QB. I thought this at the time, and also thought that the team might well have a couple of down years while Love adapted to the speed and complexities of defenses in the NFL. Instead, the team paid Rodgers a lot, and although they won a lot of games, it was his absolute belief in (a) going for big chunks rather than just moving the chains, and (b) look for Davante Adams first. If he's only double covered, throw it his way anyway. Another receiver was open by three yards? Adams get the ball thrown to him anyway. And rookies? They had cooties, as far as Rodgers was concerned.

Anyone that thinks he isn't worth it hasn't paid attention to the Packers. The team around him last season ranged from mid to bad, O line: mid, WR's, TEs: ok but not great, RB: was great but missed half the season, defense: bad, special teams: sucked. But it's the mid season turn around that really seals it, Lafleur turned over more of the offense to Love, getting him more involved in the play selections and audibles and this is what opened up the offense and let the team go on that second half tear right into the divisional round (where they'd have gone to the NFCCG if special teams didn't suck a**, yes Love threw the INT but it was missed kicks that put them there in the first place, a problem that cost them Ws in the regular season).

Im fine with this formula that the Packers have patented even if it only results in 1 superbowl per QB. Still better than the majority of NFL teams. It’s hard to argue against it-the rookie quarterback contract formula isn’t working out any better.

Huge Packer fan, happy to see Love succeed but that contract was too much. Yes, pay QB’s early, but the Packers should have given him $40 mil over 5 years, with either big guaranteed money up front or the option to negotiate the contract at year 3. This would give them a couple more years to see while still paying him. The fact that Lamar Jackson, Patrick Mahomes, Josh Allen are making less and Joe Burrow is sitting closely behind is insane. The real winner here might be Love’s agent…lol

I'm a 49er fan and I want to take congratulations to join the love and the Green Bay Packers but in my opinion that is so much money for a guy that have one good season.. please don't get me wrong there's a lot of good signs saying that Jordan will be good for years to come but it's not guaranteed and the fact that the Green Bay Packers put so much money on him, He's basically going to have to carry the team on his shoulders.. now we have seen a lot of good quarterbacks have one good year and a lot of them is their rookie seasons, but now a lot of time is past when defenses can study against their opponents QB, but who knows Jordan Love could have a Hall of Fame career... I remember when the 49ers played Green Bay this past season in the playoffs and I was about to have a heart attack during that whole game but again congratulations to the Green Bay Packers and Jordan left I wish nothing for the best for both of them

To say that the Aaron Rodgers selection was nothing the Packers needed is not really correct. Favre was outspoken about retirement and threatened the Packers to retire throughout the years upcoming. They knew they needed a replacement and they took the opportunity when Rodgers luckily dropped into their lap but it was not just an opportunity to take because they felt like it at the moment - Rodgers was needed

I don't understand why EVERYONE freaks out when a QB gets the highest contract of all time!! The last 5 QBs that signed a deal were ALL the highest paid until the next QB. If the cowboys pay dak HE will be paid at least 55 million a year an be the highest paid QB. All I'm gonna say is this, in 4 years when the next rookie class is up for extended contracts you will see them making 60-70 million a year!! This has to stop because it will handcuff teams in the future. Pretty soon (if they don't stop this) QBs will be making 80,90 million a year and that will DESTROY nfl organizations. Unfortunately the market won't come down for paying QBs and teams will not be able to afford signing key players
