This would make a good movie, if you show their whole life. How they met, the times they spent together, how they fell in love until the day Jenny becomes sick...Just a pretty normal slice-of-life movie. And then as the big plot twist of the movie Alfred takes away her ribbon and you only see how the head falls off and lies on the ground and then the credits pop up...

I'm so glad books like this existed when I grew up. It's important for the young mind to be exposed to a diversity of art and literature, including those that explore death and horror. Too many adults I run into were too sheltered as kids and it reflects in the way they they think, behave, and how non-resilient they are as individuals.

I wonder if he was still inquisitive and kept asking her about her ribbon when she was giving birth to their kids. Alfred: Honey, why didn't you take off that ribbon before you started having contractions? Doctor: Jenny, you're doing great! I can see the head. Alfred: Honey, are you sure that your ribbon isn't- Jenny: Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh! *Baby cries* Doctor: It's a boy! Nurse: Alfred, would you like to hold your son? *Alfred can't stop looking at his panting wife.*

As a kid, this story confused me instead of scaring me.. I was like "so the scary part is that she was technically dead the whole time? If she was walking and talking and even grew old, she is essentially functioning like a living person, so it almost doesn't matter that she was dead". I couldn't understand why it was supposed to be scary since it's just a story about a normal girl's life except she happens to be "dead"

OK, so I heard this story when I was six years old and never forgot it. Now that I'm a teacher, something reminded me of it, and since we're in our last days, I decided to orally tell them the story. (I was a little off with the details, i.e. he removed the "scarf" on their wedding night). They were all scared but laughing at the same time. I hope I didn't traumatize them. I think today's kids have seen more.....let's see if there were any nightmares over the weekend!!! lol
@Kay2be2mr8 жыл бұрын
I would love to tell these stories to my students but I work in a church based private school where parents are so sensitive about any little thing that I'd be scared of receiving complaints the next day. The Green Ribbon Once, there was a girl named Jenny. She was like all the other girls except for one thing, she always wore a green ribbon around her neck. There was a boy, named Alfred in her class. Alfred liked Jenny, and Jenny liked Alfred. One day, he asked her, "Why do you wear that ribbon all the time?" "I cannot tell you." Said Jenny. But, Alfred kept asking. "Why do you wear it?" And Jenny would say, "It is not important." Jenny and Alfred grew up and fell in love. One day, they got married. After their wedding, Alfred said, " Now that we are married, you must tell me about the green ribbon." "You still must wait." Said Jenny. "I will tell you when the right time comes." Years pass, Alfred and Jenny grew old. One day, Jenny became very sick. The doctor told her she was dying. Jenny called Alfred to her side. "Alfred.." She said. "Now I can tell you about the green ribbon. Untie it. And you will see why I could not tell you before." Slowly and carefully, Alfred untied the ribbon. And Jenny's head fell off.

The narration is what makes this darker than it has to be.

That would've scared the crap out of me as a child. I was afraid of that one book series with the creepy substitute who came in to substitute the nice teacher nobody ever listened to.....

I can’t say how many times I read this EXACT book, listening to this EXACT audio in daycare. After seeing this again after all these years, I discovered that all five of these images, especially the last one, were permanently burned into my retinas and remained there until today…

Mmm, I vividly remember this book and the chills it used to send up my spine! This story in particular stuck with me, it's just a brilliant twist; slowly and quietly building up to it, and then BOOM! It's dropped in your lap like her cold head itself!
