He ended up chasing the girl with the nail in her head through the woods (it was a hallucination) and eventually sat down at the tree. But he was alive. The corpse of nail girl definetly wasn't.

At the end, you can see how the dead child’s body is still in the rotting process. If we’re getting scientific here, the body was left in a forest which is usually somewhat moist and lush. In this climate and environment, bodies take only about 3 weeks or so to decompose. In the flashback to the previous Halloween, they were still alive. That child died very recently.

At 7:56 you can see there’s a bear trap on her foot, when the flashlight hits her. Also, it was “last halloween” when he was beat up and first met her (without his mom there) and she first got the “you found me” note with him. He met her when she was alive, but I think the story was she died later that night last halloween (regardless of actual rot time). I mean, why else would she have died in that costume?

I discovered this animation several years ago, back when I was a young kid, no older than 6 or perhaps 7 years. I didn't know english back then, so I lost the name of the animation for quite some time. It relies very little on dialogue so I did understand the gist of it, and it has shaped a lot of my perspective on halloween. It made me really sad all that time ago, and made me think, for a good while. I still come to it, and it still has a lot of impact in me. It's pieces like this, characteristic and emotional, that get to people the most. I hope it doesn't sound corny, but ever since I saw this, Halloween's been more of a date to think for me, about life and friends, even moreso since I stopped going out for candy. It's been a long time since I last revisited this. It had quite a big impact this time. That's a lot of text to say I just think this is a wonderful work of art. You put a lot of soul to it, and I'm absolutely sure there's a lot of people around the world who won't ever forget it. Happy Halloween (I know it's december but I still gotta say it)

I think what I liked most was the polar opposites in their personalities. The boy was always so happy and cheerful while the girl didn't show much emotion. In the picture in the police's notebook, it looked like she was just as cheerful as the boy when she was alive, so maybe she was attached to seeing what she used to be when she was alive. Still fun to see how two people acting completely opposite of each other could have been such good friends.

Small detail. A lot of people believe that the first time they meet she was alive but if you look at her legs. You will see the mark of the bear trap! The problem here is what day the girl died? Cuz if last year, the body would have been decomposed but as you can see, it's not. And the picture of her missing case, she's wearing the Halloween costume. So to speculate, the girl died between the first day of Halloween and the day before Halloween started. She went out to show her costume and ended up at the barricade with a DANGER sign. She got curious so she went in and regretted it afterward. She got chased by some wild animal and luckily got away with some bruises but she accidentally stepped onto a bear trap and can't stand anymore so she leans on the tree and waited to be found. How tragic

Explanation: The boy was lonely, vulnerable, and young being a perfect target for a spirit to show itself too. The first year they met, it is visible on the girls leg that there is teeth marks from the metal bear traps, where she unfortunately lost her life to one. Throughout the whole video, she is trying to lure him into finding her body, however she finds it no better time to do so when he finds out that she could possibly be fake, and played out from his mind, once she makes herself to the metal fencing and through, she descends into the woods in a swiftly manner, knowing where every bear trap is and knowing he’d follow closely behind so he wouldn’t lose her in the woods, mainly for his safety but most importantly to find her body. Once he meets her at the tree, they both share another piece of candy together, sadly that will be their last. He had found her. Where she had passed due to the trap, where she was once lonely and vulnerable, and sadly where she bled out to death. It is seen once the search party found the boy and now, the girl laying up against the tree beside him, she is badly decomposed, and upon her lap laid the candy note “you found me” where a year prior she had ate her last piece of candy and died shortly after, Reason why whenever they shared candy together, it always read the same thing. When the women officer notices the dead remains of the child, she looks through her book where she notices that the girl looks like the one who went missing a year prior on Halloween day. Thus the boy finding the girls remains, letting her pass on freely, and the search party that could never find her can now properly give the girl a funeral and bring her family closure for her disappearance. This is very sad, yet so beautiful. Hope this cleared up some confusion

I think my theory here is that she got into an argument with her family, it was said in the book of the woman she was last seen with her family, she then ran off to the woods because maybe that was her happy place, but then she did not realize that people there put bear traps all over the place, so she accidentally stepped on one and died of blood loss. Nobody even bothered looking for her, unlike the boy's mother who even go as far as going into the woods full of bear traps, it would have made sense why the little girl was still not found. Her parents did not love her like the boy. It's sad.
