I couldn't even begin to imagine how horrifying this would be. I thank God that I didn't make my family's home in Tornado Alley, but I have been through a few. Nothing like this obviously, but I could never imagine what it would be like to go through this nightmare. When I first moved to Florida at 11 years old I was DEATHLY afraid of tornados. I had nightmares for weeks, but I felt silly living in Tampa and worrying about tornados. I went through some EF-0s and EF-1s down there, but nothing that was worrying. I was even chased through Tampa Bay by a waterspout on my boat when suddenly three separate storms all came together pretty much exactly where I was fishing with a friend. I didn't have a big boat, so I didn't have a radio on it, but I could see what was going on and we barely got out of there with our lives. We faced 2-6 foot seas on our way in on a 14' fiberglass flats boat...😂😂😂

I’ve lived through a number of hurricanes the peaks of which came in the middle of the night. What I couldn’t see but couldn’t help but hear was, in the worst storms, terrifying. After a particularly hard hit in the night, as the sun rose, I found the doors blocked by what turned out to be fallen trees. My neighbors came to help get the front door and we spent the next 3 days sawing and stacking at each other’s houses until we had piles with many tons of debris. We became much closer than before, sharing meals and booze over a gas camping stove for the 21 days without power. My then 4 year old daughter remembers it 19 years later with great fondness. That’s a good thing.

There’s a forgotten tornado that hit Jefferson City Missouri in 2019 it caused a lot of destruction but luckily nobody died and it’s believed that nobody died because of the weather man Zach Paul who stayed on the air and warned people when it hit everybody in the area had 30 seconds to react and get to shelter but the destruction was massive it’s called the Jefferson City Missouri EF3 and the crazy part it happened on the 7th anniversary of the Joplin EF5 and it was rain wrapped and it was in the middle of the night luckily nobody died

Awesome video! This tornado was only crawling along at around 20-25 mph. I can't imagine the agonizing wait...knowing that your world is about to change forever. I live in NE Kansas, and was watching this on a live stream through a KSN cable affiliate, although after it had already gone through Greensburg. I've heard/read stories that Dave Freeman from KSN-Wichita (now retired) had to BEG to be put on wall to wall coverage....not just occasional break ins. He is a hero and a legend, and took the time to speak to speak to the potential kids at home...letting them know he had them and telling them what to do safety wise. Jay Prater is also a hero and legend as well....and is still at KAKE.

I've gotta say, this is literally the BEST music choice for a tornado documentary, EVER.
@timothyvanhoeck233
@timothyvanhoeck233 2 ай бұрын
I must respectfully disagree, not because the music is bad, but because the more upbeat music occurs at the worst possible moments in the video and is often so loud it drowns the video creator's voice out. It's distracting and doesn't fit the mood of the video at all. If it was simply placed only during the pre-storm and recovery segments, sure, it'd be fine. But the music during the portions where the tornado is ongoing, killing and destroying, should've either been replaced with something much more sinister sounding, or done away with entirely.

@@timothyvanhoeck233 oh yeah, I’m not mention I thought many documentaries and be honest music doesn’t really match the vibe even if it was a little tornado that turned into a monster. It still shouldn’t really have ominous music. I definitely think sure when it goes to its full and they’re talking about someone’s getting literally trapped in a tornado. They should have all this music but videos like these it works very well, I recommend watching other tornado documentaries this dude this is new. I haven’t seen him use but it’s good.

@JustinLHopkins

@@t.r.4496 Wow, so you’ve seen it all. That’s truly incredible. The National weather service has a very long report on the Greensburg tornado with statistics etc. and apparently it took 40,000 truckloads to clear all the debris out. They also estimated that the tornado released the energy equivalent of 100-600 Hiroshima bombs. This tornado doesn’t get as much attention as Andover, Moore and Joplin but the images of the damage look worse to me than those particular tornadoes. This was one for the records.
@t.r.4496
@t.r.4496 Ай бұрын
@@JustinLHopkins I watch a lot of tornado videos and documentaries. The Greensburg tornado is one that rarely gets mentioned and I don't know why. I drove 24 hours back to Greensburg in 2016 from where I live now just to look at what has been done in 8 years and they have come a long way from that night. It's sad that half the population is gone. You can still see some damage line trees and such. If I remember right the two story building that had a vehicle parked on the second floor that night was still there. The building, not the car I mean. It was a somber feeling going back.
@JustinLHopkins
@JustinLHopkins Ай бұрын
@@t.r.4496 I think it should be given more attention too. In meteorological circles it’s quite famous. If you asked a random person on the street “Do you remember the Moore tornado in 1999?” They’d probably have no clue what you’re talking about. I find that a lot of people are completely aloof and oblivious to the world around them. I also drove through Greensburg and it’s a nice little town. You can tell something happened there though. Another reason it should get more attention is because the NWS noted that some of the damage was unusual and “unexplained phenomena”. For example, a fire hydrant was ripped right out of concrete and many of the people who died were taking shelter in their basement, yet that didn’t save them in the end. They didn’t go into much detail about the unusual phenomena, so I wonder what exactly they mean by that. I’ll say one thing though. The pictures and video of that monster at night when it was illuminated by lightning are some of the most terrifying images I’ve ever seen. It’s strange that we haven’t had an EF5 since 2013 which is a record. The previous record was just over 1,000 days and now we’re well over 4,000. Only 59 F5 tornadoes have been documented since records began so they’re extremely rare but it is unusual to go this long. I wonder what the deal is?

I relate to the people that had to deal with the horrors of the aftermath. The first time you see a body of a person that died in a traumatic way it changes you. It is not a thing you are easily rid of. The sights and smells are forever burned in the darkest parts of your memory. You may be able to cope with them and overcome the trauma but they will live with you forever. After what I saw I didn’t sleep for two days, didn’t sleep well for weeks, I honestly don’t remember what I did the day after or the evening before. All I remember is what I saw. All you can do is seek help from your loved ones, from professionals, from your faith and keep moving forward one day at a day. All you can do you is try to be 1% better everyday and keep going in honor of those who no longer can

At the end of the video he mentions other towns that had to rebuild like Joplin and Moore. But he also mentions ‘Paradise’ as one of the towns. Which tornado/town is that referring to? Google was no help.

I wish he would have specified, but Paradise was destroyed after the devastating 2018 Camp Fire in California.

@@mrdogeepic8750 I mean we all know they're gonna maintain the preliminary EF4 rating but otherwise yeah, its only been a few months. And also, despite the incredible footage and strength, it didn't have nearly as much of an impact as something like this.

@@reaIixxApparently the EF5 has gone into hiding. The previous record was a little over 1,000 days. We’re now past 4,000 now. Very strange.

The greensburg tornado is one of my personal faves It’s setting and environment is perfect for a wedge. And the fact the storm produced 5 wedges (greensburg included) was just amazing. I hardly know any other storms that are capable of doing this That is why greensburg is my fave. It’s setting was spot on and the amount of surprises was… gorgeous and terrifying at the same time

The tornado that developed after Greensburg was even larger at 2.2 miles. It didn’t hit any structures so it wasn’t rated. I’m sure it was an EF5 though.

Magnificently sensitive, brilliant and spectacular editing (zillions of hours), judicious choice in the Floyd's unparalleled Dark Side of The Moon. Obviously such a sad and tragic subject, still you delivered it with awesome respect and true impressive artistry. Thank you and bravo for the memories of all those that left us.

As far as I’m aware it’s been an EF5 since its original survey. Definitely nothing recent. It’s actually the first EF5 on the EF scale.

They rated this tornado an EF5 basically right away. All they had to do was look at the town that disappeared.

One of the things that freaks me out about how big this tornado was, it was said that the eye of it was so calm people thought it had passed and then the other side of the wind field hit at full force. That is insanely terrifying to me. Plus the other tornadoes it put down post Greensburg were nothing to sniff at either EDIT: Also the fact that for people watching in the city it was getting closer and closer and heading right for Greensburg with nothing anyone could do is terrifying
