I have videos of the May 20th, 2013 tornado on my channel, and as soon as it passed I was one of the few to first arrive on scene at Plaza Towers Elementary. Absolutely horrifying. The sounds, the smells, the water and electric sparking everywhere. They already had pulled a child or two out of that wreckage that had been pretty violently mangled when the school was flattened. I stayed and helped dig for well over an hour. I was one of the few people that actual found and pulled one of the children that had passed from the wreckage. The 11th anniversary is coming up, and to this day, I still have the exact same reoccurring nightmare of finding that child laying pinned down underwater, looking straight at me. I'm a wreck once again just retelling my story. I'm a proud Moore native, and I will be for the rest of my life. Seeing my neighbors in such pain and misery like that disturbs me greatly. I grew up on 12th & Eastern. That's home. Moore Strong.

Around the 22:00 mark, that sounded alot like Jeff Piotrowski as he was walking around Joplin in May 2011 after the tornado. I was visiting a friend in Springfield, MO and we had been under a tornado warning the entire day up until the tornado struck Joplin. I left for home that day...and I had actually called off work to stay an extra day with my friend, and I was chased 13 hours home by tornados and severe thunderstorms. I was actually forced off of the interstate by Indiana State Police in Indianapolis because a tornado had actually crossed the interstate right in front of me. I was forced to take shelter in a Home Depot off the interstate.

@Oraxyl
@Oraxyl 2 ай бұрын
@@Tyler-vu8yr from my perspective, its hard to say since i was so young, but what i can remember of it, it sounded serious to the people around me, (for context, most Oklahoman's dont really get that serious about it since its practically a common occurrence), but this time everyone had a tremble and shake in their voice. I didnt understand it at the time, but i can still remember the look on my grandparents and my own parents faces. it had look like they saw death itself in front of them. in the shelter you could hear the garage doors rattle and violently shake, the creaking of the ceiling and the shingles get ripped off. The roar louder than a freight train passing by, and the eerie sirens in the background almost muffled from the chaos. after it passed, we exited the shelter and we went out into the backyard, and it looked barren, tree limbs missing, trash everywhere, fences knocked over, and the horrifying yellow skyline. To this day that same yellow color in the sky after a storm like that brings chills, i cant describe the feeling of seeing a tornado that close, but the words that comes to mind are a sense of comfort yet utter dismay. they days coming after were filled with shock and grief, just remembering sitting in the living room and watching the news broadcast the destruction and trail it left behind. looking at what was so familiar to me now, didnt look at all recognizable. but the one thing i can relate to every time a tornado passes near where i live, the same feeling of mortality that brushes over me, that sense that maybe i dont survive this. and its frightening to even look back at some of the pictures of my house. the broken and uplifted trees, nearly missing a roof, bent garage doors, and the clutter spread throughout from the winds. even though i wasnt harshly affected by the tornado, hearing the sirens go off every saturday always brings me back to that month. even to others it makes them shake, one of my old teachers once talked about her experience in the 1999 bridge creek tornado, the entire time she sounded scared and shaky, then bursting into tears, i didnt understand at the time why all the adults would cry talking about those events, but as i got older, i started to understand and resonating with them, as you can truly see the chain of events that unfolded, the dead pets and destroyed houses, people losing their businesses, peoples friends and family members turning up dead days later. it was one of the most horrifying moments in my life and will stick with me forever, it sometimes can be difficult watching videos about it since i hear the news channels that we would listen to in the shelter on a radio, and as the tornado passes, the radio cuts off and stops working, its the scariest thing to me, losing that feeling of assurance, that safe guard just disappearing, the clarity you feel after it passes just to realize you dont have half of what you did before. I just dont want someone to go out and feel like what the people of moore felt.

It was in Briarwood. Sam showed up to get his son, but ended up sheltering with him and a few of his classmates in a bathroom. He basically huddled over four boys including his son, Benji, as the walls crumbled on his back. The boys were using books to protect their heads. Sam Peña then pushed the collapsed wall off him and boys, and lifted them out of the destroyed bathroom. He likely saved those four kids' lives that day.

as a survivor of this tornado, i was located just a few miles south of briarwood in my own elementary school, the largest change i remember is how seriously schools started taking severe weather outlooks. Beginning in middle school i remember that when the NWS would predict a high probability of severe weather schools would almost do a snow day. While they still had all staff come to the schools, for students our attendance those days were optional. We wouldn't be counted negatively for missing the day entirely, or even just leaving early. My mom whos parents lost everything in the 99 torndao (she lived in the first row of houses next to westmoore high school) normally would allow my brother and i to stay home, we would watch the weather all day and have our "tornado bags packed". It definitely would be eerie on these days that i would go into school and see the building almost empty. At least for Norman Public Schools, the district I was in, they did what they could to give families the ability to have control in where their kids are. I still remember my mom picking me up from school in May 2013 crying because the school wouldnt let her pick me up since the sirens were blaring. she had to shelter in place in the main office while i was in the music room. Parents were outraged, so in Norman we started to have lots of "weather days" in may.

This is one of the most informative video of the 2013 Moore EF5 tornado. The video of those taking shelter while a violent tornado is destroying their houses above must be a terrifying experience for the family. It's an awesome point that was brought up in the video. Likewise, the more I learn about damage analysis and look at tornado damage more objectively, the more appreciative I am of the survey conducted for this event. I was one of those weenies that immediately sensationalized the 4/27/2011 tornadoes. However, the more my knowledge grows, the more I understand that this tornado was every bit as violent as the 4/27/2011 EF5s. It produced the exact same types of DIs as both Hackleburg and Smithville, including ripping plumbing and electrical routing violently out of slab foundations. People need to look at the EF5 category as the "Jarrell/May 3rd" rating, as it was literally created by baselining those two tornadoes. Essentially, any tornado to receive an EF5 rating is on the "May 3rd/Jarrell" level, at least in terms of the damage indicators.

Kudos. MooreOn. I get it I am from Arkansas and Oklahoma is a beautiful state. You guys get it when yall can see it. We get it when we cant. I came through OKC after the '99 tornado and had to take 44S to 240 because 40 was stop and go and iffy. I stayed in Ammarillo the night before behind the front. If not i would have experienced it firsthand. The aftermath was astounding. The one thing that sticks out and astounds me was an AF termenal on the southside of 240 where a driver was killed was destroyed more or less but a mobile home dealership on the northside of 240 weathered it with trailers butted against one another and broken glasd but not destroyed. But the only thing that would ever make you a Moron living in Moore Ok after 2 of the baddest tornadoes in history is not having a storm shelter on sight. But i do like the MooreOn part. But what is teally sad about 2013 is that children died. There should have been a shelter instead of basement.

I live in Moore, and have for most of my life. To your point of poor construction, and shelters for schools- our state government takes tax money from tobacco, and casinos. It’s supposed to go to the schools, but they act like they have no funding at all. I was in westmoore high school in 2013, and we were still using textbooks from the 80’s. Often we had to share them too, because there wasn’t enough to go around. Wherever that money is going, which is likely in some cronies pockets, it isn’t going to the schools. I have a deep anger about that day knowing it was entirely preventable for those children, and it’s even deeper knowing it’s not improving in case another incident like this happens again.

I have to admit that I was almost yelling at the screen: WHY don't schools in this area have adequate storm shelters? I can just see politicians and risk management experts crunching numbers but this is ridiculous. The woman who is advocating for these deserves kudos just as much as those who provide early warnings, and the first responders. They also must feel helpless and frustrated. Again, I don't have kids and I live in Europe far away from Tornado Alley but in a second I would contribute to this cause. Edit: Give me a link and I'll do it right now if it would go directly to public storm shelters, especially schools and daycare centers. This could also help save the lives of parents who may be (understandably) wanting to risk their own lives just to be with their kids or know if they are safe. This seems like a no-brainer. Edit: Once again, I can't even express how much I admire and respect what you are doing on every level.

I survived the Moore 2013 tornado when I was in pre-k at a daycare. Later found out the tornado took off part of the roof off my daycare building and destroying part of it too. My daycare was just 1.6 miles away from Orr family farm.

I remember this tornado vividly because it was the last one I experienced living in Norman, OK before we moved. I was at school and my older sibling was at one of the high schools, what sticks the most was the rush from the elementary school to the high school and home while the oldest sister was at work at the Target in Norman. I also remember one of my friends from school reporting that their house had extensive damage. Definitely an experience I would not want to relive.

This was amazing, I’m currently hyper fixated on everything tornado related as I don’t live in a tornado prone area. And hearing about all the story’s of past tornado’s from storm chasers and Google. This tornado I was really interested in, this video was executed perfectly. Definitely gained another sub from this one.

Thank you so much for showing footage from shelters and shining a spotlight on the victims. So many other video creators focus on the destruction as if it's just cool and leave the victims as nothing more than numbers.

What an awesome channel and video to find after EmpLemon made a video on the last F5 and last EF5 that struck Moore, Oklahoma. This goes into a lot more detail about everything relating to it, which is really amazing. Subscribing now.

I love how this channel addresses issues that are part of the results & aftermath of the tornadoes [ie. mental health struggles, poor construction laws, etc.] Thank you for this coverage, and an even bigger thank you for bringing those lost and those who sacrificed their lives & bodies to remembrance.

“It’s almost over” imagine trying to convince young children and yourself that an insane act of God would pass. With no tangible hope except for what you have in your soul. Jesus… peace to the souls lost of the Plaza Towers Elementary students, and many others.

Moore is extremely unlucky in general, it's a tragedy, but the city is lucky they got the Moore EF5 and not... and not whatever _El Reno_ was... The city would be slabbed, entirely, if El Reno had struck Moore. I have never seen a tornado in my 22 years of life but the videos of El Reno terrify me to my core. 2.6 miles wide, 296mph highest windspeeds... The carnage that would have been produced had it hit a heavily populated city, would probably dwarf what happened in Moore.

Well yeah, but you could say that about anything. No need to say that if a different tornado hit it, it would change damage. That's obvious, and if your trying to put down the Moore tornado, that's just insensitive.

If the 2013 El Reno, Oklahoma tornado struck downtown Oklahoma City it would have been reminiscent of what Hiroshima, Japan looked like after the atomic bombing of that city in August of 1945.

@@yunoyukki7344 No it doesn't, the EF system is based off of DAMAGE that DID HAPPEN. Not windspeeds or damage that COULD'VE happened.

I wonder if I-44 Riverside Speedway had an effect on the tornado’s red coloration early in its life due to the track being a dirt track and taking a direct hit from the soon to be monster

I myself am scared for everyone currently living in Moore Oklahoma. Strong tornadoes have hit that town multiple times within 15 years of each other, why wouldn't it happen again? That wasn't just a freak 15ish years, that area is PRIME for tornado development.
