Hearing the idea of Garth as a god demanding blood sacrifice makes me think about the Aztecs and how their gods needed blood to ensure the sun and the crops would stay green. Considering the magic is real in this world, could the fact that the seasons are so out of whack be a result of the fact that the divine king Garth is dead?

Brynden Rivers has a lot of connections to the Grey King: He killed his half-brother and two of his sons, which makes him a kinslayer. He also sits in a weirwood tree and looks more like a corpse than a living person (a more like a tree than human). Before he joined the Nightswatch, he was described as pale with white hair (although that was mostly because he was an albino). He was never loved and also never had children, which shows a lack of fertility. Daemon Blackfyre, the brother he slew, however has some symbolism with Garth Greenhand: He was well loved by lots of people and people wanted him to be king. He had seven sons (his two eldest were twins) and at least two daughters, which means lots of fertility and virility, often associated with Garth. There is probably lots more, but I don't really know how to properly express myself in English. (Also, Brynden Tully is named after Brynden Rivers. In his youth, the Blackfish had auburn-red hair in his youth, but it has now turned grey. He has also never fathered any children (lack of fertility), whereas his older brother had six children. Could the two older Tully brothers have some connection to the Green King and the Grey King?)

I know this video is a bit older, but I'd like to point out that as of Fire and Blood, we know House Tarth has also produced triplets in the past, as when she was trying to convince Alleric Stark to permit her to find matches for his daughters and the children of his bannermen, Queen Alysanne boasted that Lord Tarth had triplet daughters and despite the fact that everyone had assumed he'd have trouble finding good matches for all three, she stepped in and now they were all betrothed. We also know that Brienne's mother had twins, but they died in the cradle due to being born prematurely, the birth killing their mother. So somehow this mega-fertility seems to impact House Tarth.

One thing that's really interesting here is that, like dragons being representations of monarchy, the "brother against brother" motif connects the fantasy aspect of the novels to the political one. Martin uses the phrase "brother versus brother" all the time to refer to war, especially civil war, so all these examples of mythical and historical brothers killing brothers can be seen as saying something about the nature of war itself.

Great video, I just subscribed. A few points I might add though: if the Grey King is the archetype of infertility then why is he said to have fathered almost every house that settled the iron islands? Maybe that was long before he fought and slew Garth, before he was cursed, and at one point he was as virile as Garth Greenhand? It says house Goodbrother was descended from the Grey King`s ``loyal`` older brother. You can`t be King in Westeros while you still have an older brother (except for orders like the kingsguard, night`s watch, etc.). Does this mean he became the Grey King when he killed Garth. Does this mean Garth was loyal to the end, and refused to fight his brother and ``kin-slay`` just like Bael the bard refused to fight the Lord of WInterfell. Also you compared him to Cain. I remember reading something about how Cain was cursed by God seven-fold, doomed to walk the earth cursed by all men, and all his descendants were cursed as well. (I think it says one of Cains ancestors invented weapons of war, cursing all humanity with warfare). This may explain why the Iron-born steal women (Salt-wives) on their raids, to expand their genetic diversity. Because the Iron-born seem to be cursed with a bleak life, infertility, still-births, sickness is common on the isles. Most everyone scratches a living fishing, or mining, or raiding. Sorry for such a long comment, but this was a great thought-provoking video.

Hey, thanks for watching and glad you liked the video! So as far as the Grey King's many children, we have to remember that the Grey King was not always Grey... and that he was probably much like his brother before this grey transformation. This means that he was not always the epitome of infertility. Please take a look at my other ironborn videos, I answer some questions that might be going through your mind. Ultimately, the Grey King killed his brother causing this grey transformation. I do believe he killed his brother to take inheritance, this is something hinted at the tale of Huzhor Amai (another part of the Azor Ahai monomyth) who "wore the pelt of the king of the hairy men", If you look at the tale of Jacob and Essau... Jacob was the younger usurper who tricked his father into getting his brother's inheritance by wearing the pelt of a hairy man so to speak. It is also hinted at in the Curse of the First king where it states "pretenders to the title" which is referring to the Grey King... so yes, it was the Grey King who was the Usurper to his Older brother. It is difficult to ascertain what is being referred to with the leal/loyal portion of the Goodbrother myth. Hopefully this helps and thanks for watching!

Hey, thanks for replying so quickly. I'm checking out your other Ironborn videos and I want to say thanks for the great content! I agree with you and I think that this is a great theory, that Garth Greenhand and the Grey King are related (and maybe more first age heroes are related to them as well). The leal/loyal portion of the Goodbrother myth is maybe that Garth refused to fight his brother (refused to become a kinslayer) and the GreyKing struck him down becoming the cursed kinslayer, as you said.

I love how you pull so much seemingly random stuff together. I think part of the reason for the ubiquity of the Cain and Abel motif is because it's closer to us than we realize. We're much more likely to be assaulted or murdered by a relative than a stranger. This is especially true for children. The aftermath is so much more destructive for everyone involved as well. These murders are much more likely to be heat of the moment decisions, and are often more devastating for the murderer once they realize what they've done. You can safely demonize a stranger, but it doesn't work as well when it's family. Everyone has to pick a side, and creates a fracture that can't really be fixed. That's a bad outcome in any situation, but becomes really dangerous in a place like the ASoIaF world, or when a lot of these legends were created in our own. I think it also goes into why so many cultures have similar strong taboos on breaking guest right, and sanctuary spaces.

Baelor wore crown of flowers and wines, his sistter wife Daena gave birth to Daemon who had nine children, and was married to a Tyroshi woman, as we know Tyroshi dies their hair to different colours, but green is the leading choice, especially if they are really from Tyrosh. And when Daemon Blackfyre was slain, Targaryens had lost their king, his green heir Baelon, Baelon's sons, and grandsons, we know Aerys never had children, and Rhaegel's son died, as well as Maekar's heirs. I think it is possible Daemon was Baelor's son, and a fertility god of his own.

Does this mean Tyrion is doomed to be even uglier? I wonder if he doesn't turn into a more corpeslike figure. Or maybe he already has been compared to one and I missed it. I know GRRM loves Tyrion, and I do believe this theory holds true. Maybe Tyrion is too important to have his story altered heavily to match the theming, unlike with "side" characters. Maybe his Kinslaying curse will be more subtle. I do remember the whole Shrouded Lord encounter. Maybe I should reread that bit, look for clues from the other Grey(scale) King we get in the story.

1. Seems like Coldhands has mixed Garth/Grey symbolism (rides a great elk with antlers, but wears black and gray, is dead, etc.) 2. What do you think the significance of the mixed symbolism is? (The obvious life/death mix plus example of Coldhands = "undead" is all I got.) 3. This makes me wonder if Coldhands has a "Garth" figure he killed who was kin to him. (LML's essays make me immediately jump to "Azor Ahai/The Night's King who was his father or brother" of course...) 4. Also because of LML's essays I wonder if AA is a Grey or mixed figure in the sense that he was a kinslayer, but this archetype seems to focus on killing male kin (fathers or brothers), and AA (or the Night's King or Bloodstone Emperor) myths don't really have a second male figure (besides "implied sons," but again based on your examples Grey King figures should really kill fathers or brothers, not sons). If there were more examples of female-kin slaying Grey King figures or female Garth figures I might entertain the idea that Nissa Nissa was kin to AA, to mirror the Amethyst Empress being kin to the Bloodstone emperor, but it doesn't look like the symbolism matches. LML convinced me Azor Ahai is a Grey King or mixed figure, and since kinslaying is such a big part of the Grey King archetype I want to believe there's evidence for him being a kinslayer though. I feel like one of y'all has written about all of these things already and I've just forgotten. In any case thanks for getting me thinking!!

I haven't heard anything like this before, will keep watching. My own theories on the Ironborn The Grey King was pretty clearly an Other There was a House that founded a tyrannical dynasty of Ironborn kings who ignored Kingsmoots. The other Ironborn Houses revolted, the kingly house was totally wiped out, and its name slowly forgotten or deliberately unpersoned. Well, I think that house was called Pyke, and after the revolution it became the Isles Bastard Name

Also I can’t help but laugh whenever you describe a myth as “odd” because honestly, I’ve been studying different mythological traditions for years and I have yet to find a story that ISN’T odd- I guess it’s all a matter of what you consider odd at this point and I find it charming.

Hi Clare! So in the scope of comparative mythology, you would be right in saying that nothing should seem odd relative to the many myths of our world. What I was attempting to portray to the audience is that some things can at times seem out of place, forced, and unnecessary that seem to stick out like a sore thumb. Rather than making a meta comparison approach to various mythologies with that statement, I was speaking to the writer's storytelling style. As you can tell from this video, I am also a fan of world mythology :-) Hopefully the to portions concerning Sumerian, Canaanite, Celtic and Arthurian myth as well as Biblical lore were more to your liking than the portions that were laughed at. Glad you found this video and thanks for watching!

The Disputed Lands oh my goodness I loved the video! I didn’t mean to imply that I didn’t like that bit, or that I didn’t understand what you meant, only that it made me smile because suddenly I was also thinking about how strange so many stories are, even if they weren’t applicable in this context. I tend to think about many things at once and so while I was processing this I was reminded of the myth about the Battle of the Stinking Head from Egypt, and how my own writing really only makes sense to me (I make up a lot of lore), and how much of a shame it was we lost so much of the world book, and a hundred other things. The results were that I laughed about how strange is such a relative concept. Honestly I think your analysis is very interesting and I love that you bring something new and fascinating to the discussion instead of rehashing material that people have discussed to death the way I’ve seen a lot of people do. It makes your videos much more watchable and thought provoking, and your channel the type I actually anticipate new content from. Basically, I’m glad you’re here. Hi. This was amazing! I'm interested to see how any of this plays out with Cersei's fratricide/vaonquar prophecy. As far as I can tell, neither Jaime nor Tyrion are associated with the color green, aside from the color of both of Jaime's and one of Tyrion's eyes. In contrast, half of Cersei's gowns are described as green or emerald, and ALL of her jewlery has emeralds, including her second crown. Interestingly, Tommen is thought to be a stag. He inherits Joffrey's crown. The crown is never described to have antlers, but the the show version does depict a crown with golden antlers. If the consequence for kinslaying is infertility, and if Jaime kills Cersei, it would mean the extinction of the Lannisters in Tywin's line, which would be a wonderful contrast to Tywin's obsession with extending the family line.

@@TheDisputedLands Oh no, I'm done with the fan community. Try reading the story again (maybe even the graphic novella) and see if you're convinced. Post it if you like :) Remember, Daeron's dream of Dunk involved a *dragon falling, not rising* - and Dunk walking away alive and well. It all fits. Dunk's poor vision through the helmet. No tilting barriers. Baelor being in front and to the right (in the direction the lance deflected which also fits with the dent in the back Baelor's helmet). Dunk thinking about his lance being his wooden finger and Baelor talking about limbs feeling like wood (as if infected with wooden Greyscale). Baelor only facing Kingsguard after the initial tilt against Maekar (who he seems to have unhorsed just prior to Dunk's lance deflecting) who were forbidden by oath to harm Baelor, until getting help from The Laughing Storm to face Maeker in the melee afterwards, which explains why he was able to stand until the end (removing the helmet seems to have killed him). Maekar not remembering having struck Baelor and nobody seeing it being done (probably because it happened in the middle of the chaotic 14-man tilt).. not to mention Bloodraven probably playing a part. There's so much more that I can't remember right now. I have some notes somewhere. Consider when Jaime is reading the White Book and comparing his own sorry oath-forsaking ass to the honorable Ser Duncan the Tall - someone we, the reader, knows to be a well meaning fool. How ironic would it be if Dunk the Lunk was a kingslayer himself? That's nothing.. you should hear my thoughts on the Velaryons and Hightowers being the real key players in our story since the Dance - and how the War of Five Kings is just round two of that conflict. A hint? Aurane Waters is Monford Velaryon incognito.. who, with his new dromonds (the largest of which is twice the size of any other warship in Westeros) and the Redwyne and Iron Fleet on their way to destroy each other, has made his house the primary naval power in Westeros once again. That explains why Monford disappeared and Aurane appeared out of nowhere and the focus on Velaryon ships during the Battle of the Blackwater (Davos and Tyrion chapters) - the Pride of Driftmark was even the last thing Davos saw in his chapter, with only the ship's oars being aflame at the time (if Davos survived, why shouldn't Lord Velaryon have every chance of doing so as well?). Besides, Aurane would've had to have served on the Pride of Driftmark to have survived as well, as the other Velaryon ships were destroyed during the battle (Bold Laughter smashed by a trebuchet, Harridan being consumed by Wildfire and Seahorse ending up in the bridge of ships, which accounts for the Velaryon spearmen Tyrion fights there). Did I mention how they're the legitimate heirs to the Iron Throne through Rhaenys -> Laena -> Baela (also the last dragon hatcher) according to the rules of succession (as the issue of a second son comes before the issue of a third, regardless of gender)? Getting ahead of myself..

So in summary... Any character who wears green, antlers, or has Bal in their name will probably have a bad time at family reunions... and those who kinslay will be haunted by old age, infertility, a life of violence, and storms. Garth Greenhand may well have been the Storm God... The Drowned God was likely Garth's brother. The drowned god killed Garth and was cursed for kinslaying... drowned by The Hammer of the waters when it carved destruction from Moat Cailin, through the neck, all the way to what is now the iron islands... In the aftermath the drowned god rose harder and stronger, reaping rather than sowing. Teaching the now Iron Islanders about boats, killing, and a general dislike of Wier-woods and the children of the Forrest. The families of the iron islands descend form the drowned god, except for the good-brothers of Greater and Lesser Wyk which descends from Garth. Maybe...

@TheDisputedLands
@TheDisputedLands 6 жыл бұрын
I see you have already found this video! The reason House Hightower has never confronted House Targaryen has a pretty simple answer. Kinslaying in Westeros is seen as really, really bad karma meaning fate will do the work. There are no specific Houses in Westeros that we have seen who are somehow purveyors of justice when it comes to kinslaying. Kinslaying is just seen as karma so bad, they are cursed. In reality the saying just stemmed from an ancient struggle between two brothers and the curse of the 1st king.
@seanmayory
@seanmayory 6 жыл бұрын
I know what your video is saying. What I'm "implying" is that house Hightower and house Targaryan are of the same family. Most people believe the reason that Old Town would burn is because it just seems logical. And it does. So if it was so logical (remember, the king of the north chose to kneel) why bother with meditating on the question for 7 days? This implies in a way that they could have won. Even during the dance of the dragons, once the Hightower army reached a certain part it turned around and went home. The armies of the Hightower have made excuses and refused to face any Targaryen directly. I'm suggesting the possibility they are doing this is to avoid kinslaying. Think about it. The base of the tower is suggested as being connected with dragons. There are stories of dragons on battle isle, and some believe ancient bones. The family created the citadel, it holds and seeks many Valyrian books. The citadel has glass candles from Valyria. Valyrians are known for their soaring towers. Quite a few theories believe that the histories are hiding the fact that Valyrians either were first men or were a third race also living in Westeros. And these theories most often consider the most likely general area they lived in to be around Old Town. Plus, there are heroes that killed dragons. So, of I follow the implied logic, it would seem that most people believe that there were Valyrians who came and settled. They did so to learn certain magic. And when they did they packed up everyone and entirely abandoned Westeros to return to Essos as shepherds to find dragons. It's sounds interesting, but not very realistic. Even if you told all your people to get on the boats to go some of them would have run away because it had become their home. Considering the investment in knowledge. Location. The belief that the Hightower are the oldest family in the area. There is at least the possibility of a connection. I'm just suggesting you take the time to read history and put the actions of the Hightower and Old Town into the context of a shared family history. I can certainly be mistaken or wrong. It's hardly the only possible history. There are hundreds of reasonable ideas. But, what if House Hightower has done everything in its power to avoid kinslaying, while at the same time manipulating everything they can to undermine and bring down a cadet or senior branch. They want something forgotten. They don't want anyone to know or remember they share lineage. Or is tinfoil. Lol.

David.J.Peterson - Linguist who made the Valyrian Language - released the glyph meaning of Bae which is "To Help" I automatically thought of this video and how Bae characters are killed and if they are connected in some way to the meaning of their name. Baelor Breakspear certainly since he would've made a good king and Baelon the Spring Prince despite usurping could've been good for the realm. Baela helped her sister keep the realm together. Balon is harder but he did help keep the islands together before he died. I don't know the significance or if GRRM had thought of the word meaning in relation but its interesting with the parallels in story and mythology if there was some link to the name meaning too

@TheDisputedLands

Hi Devi! So Robert and Ned are two very good examples of these death/fertility archetypes. Robert is a fat, jolly, fertile and lustful horned lord who takes on so many aspects of fertility gods. Ned takes on so many aspects of the grim death god which is really driven home in the scene in the Winterfell crypts between the two characters. As far as the 13th Lord Commander of the Night's watch... YES. I do believe he was brought down by his brother. Lml has some good thoughts about the !3th Lord Commander's origins. I haven't personally looked into the Stark origin concept, so for the moment I don't have anything solid to throw out there for you concerning that. About the Grey King: is it possible that the legendary figure of the Grey King could be separate from a title; as in, there was once a mighty king who grew incredibly old, died, and was succeeded by many other descendants who became known as "Grey Kings" of the Iron Islands? That, maybe, the last Grey Kings were slain in a kingsmoot, as Westerosi showed with the Greyirons (who have "grey" in their names)?

Amanda, Your content is absolutely amazing! "Nothing Someone Says Before The Word But Really Counts" , BUT, the echo during quotations is a little disturbing, like, if I'm driving or cleaning, or cooking....it's a little hard to understand. I never watch a video like this great just once, it's a lot to digest and to get the wheels turning inside your head, so sometimes I listen as I'm doing other things. Maybe it's me, english is not my first language, and I'm sure you have others foreigners as audience as well. that's why I think the echo it's not necessary. The content is so amazing, you could do black screen on the back, that it would be fine. Your voice is so beautiful, so soothing, that now that we are not going to have Roy Dotrice to read for us anymore , R.I.P Mr. Dotrice :( , you should be one of the top contenders for the audiobook. A mind needs books like a sword needs a whetstone." If it's not too much trouble, it would be nice to put the chapter/page of your quotations as you read them, mostly from TWOIAF, it's a big book, so would be nice to go straight to the right page. GrayArea started to put the chapters on her videos, that helps a lot. We are a VERY thirsty/hungry/tough crowd and we can't ever have enough, just like some people that reads the bible, the book of revelation trying to find out the day of the armageddon...everything on the ASOIAF is not as it seems, so we have to get a piece here, a crumb there, so to have the pages/chapters to read along is very helpful. Thanks for the amazing content, I hope you can upload more videos soon! Have a great day!

Hey wasser30! Glad you are liking the videos! Sorry about the quotations, just searching for a way to break them up and give them emphasis, sometimes I like to go straight into quotes and it isn't clear to the audience what I am doing. Other channels have a reader for the quotes and podcasts like Radio Westeros use an echo sound effect. I dont have a spare voice around most of the time so I feel somewhat stuck with using the echo sound effect. I am already working on incorporating chapters and books into the quotes which you can see in the Nagga video and also the Dragonroad video. I use Kindle so I don't have page numbers or chapter numbers... just the chapter names, like "Jaime" or "The Wayward Bride" for example. I have been told that the echo is worse in this video than the others... so the others might be better.

When i first watched this and you pointed out all the Bae- names being kinslayed I remembered Jaehaerys & Alysanne's son Baelon and immediately got suspicious of his death. Then i looked at other characters around that time that would be considered Kinslaying and at other Assassinations in F&B. The one I saw fit the most was Corlys - would benefit as Rhaenys would be back in succession, can get poison that could be disguised from all his trips, is a sailor and ship guy & Baelon died in a green forest (who was connected to being fertile with all his kids born and planned, and Corlys loses everyone and everything in the Dance (kinda like a divine punishment). If someone thought Corlys was capable of assassination for screwing his son over then it may allude or connect to assassinating someone for screwing his wife over (since Baelon did suck for not siding with Rhaenys). GRRM did want HOTD to start with Aemon and Baelon and considering there wasnt a lot you could do with them at first look... maybe there were things he had in mind. (This also reminds me of Joe Magicians Theory video abour Jaehaerys trying to murder Rhaena, he may have failed - good thing Rhaena wasnt named Baela... - but he is punished for attempted kinslaying by dying slowly and looking like a corpse on his deathbed) I just love this theory and all the small things that connect to much bigger things even if it wont be confirmed

@@TheDisputedLands RIGHT!! I remember thinking "okay I can see why for the complicated relationship between the heir and spare and the uncle and the heir that appears all over the series and introducing fans to these two first would allow them to clock the parallels a lot quicker. But I wonder where and how he would have wanted their story to take place since so much time spans between their deaths. I definitely see things like the prophecy, the succession issue Rhaenys and callbacks to Daenerys, and the character conflict of Baelon choosing to whether support his niece of his beloved brother or rule himself - Alysanne saying to side with family, Jae telling him the prophecy to side with duty *cough* misogyny *cough* alongside his guilt over his failure to help Viserra haunting him (as it goddamn should) before making his choice. Baelon himself does have a theme of refusing to make a choice to help his family when by all means he had the power to help them - Refusing to have sex with Alyssa so she could recover, stopping Alyssa from bullying Vaegon, seeing Viserra's distress and stopping the marriage, supporting Rhaenys for Queenhood. It would make sense if his fate was thematically connected in some way to his inaction and 'failing' to be a Green King. So the show would definitely be able to explore that and how it passed down to Viserys that ultimately quickened the seeds Jaehaerys planted that would lead to the Dance. I wrote this in a spur of the moment thing as I was rewatching your theory and HOTD reviews so I didn't check Corlys's relationship with Baelon, I just remembered the Strong assassination accusations and that Corlys was wayyyy older (oh GRRM whyyy) so he might've known Baelon and seen him as a brother but I'm not sure. While I don't want to fall into the pit trap of forcing theories in fact it still is so interesting that everything you say matches and that Baelon's death felt so odd. Since the books have the whole thing about poison being confused for choking or physical ailments maybe something deeper is there. AND YEAH THE SPRING PRINCE! So maybe someone in the family did assassinate him! Man good thing the Targs stopped using that Bae- prefix. Even the Rhae's weren't so bad. I wonder what the prefix means... Another candidate I think could work could be Vaegon - technically now the second son, he has no kids, becomes frail and pale (as a corpse one could say..) & is othered from the other kids for his detached attitude. It has always been strange how averse he was to magic when he was young and the ways of his family despite having no reason to be. Larys is rather similar to him in certain regards and we know he killed his family (idk if GRRM wrote that choice but he would've atleast approved it since he was in the writing room at that time), Euron also left his family for a long time and got his brother killed with an assassination and covered it up and he's also super weird and linked to arcane magic, Viserys II, Maekar, and Stannis also share Vaegon's status of being a last/not favoured son, not liked, his general temperament at being more practical and an asshole, and have strained relationships with magic, often being at the periphery's of magic and their families. The fact that he went to the Citadel, learned arcane magics and math and become an important part of the succession issue hints that there's a lot more to his character. Vaegon just hits al lot sweet tropes GRRM loves using for his characters. Something had to be up with him. Maybe he wrote the Blood and Fire tomb that Jaqar is trying to get in the Citadel at the moment (who else would have the intimate knowledge to know that?). Now I'm kinda believing it actually... I will always be amazed by all your theories. They're all so well-researched and cool. This and your Baelor prophecy ones are my fav (that I sometimes leave on to sleep through lol). I can't wait to see what you talk about next!

Hi, yes. You are correct. There is no reference to cain and able as summer and winter. I was referring to emesh and enten. Scholars believe this much earlier canaanite myth was the inspiration and provided the framework for the tale of cain and able. Because we see two brothers bringing offerings to their god and the two brothers quarrel when one offering is preferred over the other. In canaanite mythology emesh and enten personify summer and winter.

Hey Amanda. First of all I wanted to say that the video is amazing. I really liked your points and my mind was really blown by it. Second of all, I was wondering if you think, like LML claims that Azor Ahai, Night's King, the Bloodstone emperor might be one and the same, that the Gray King and Garth Greenhand might be one and the same? It seemed to me George is really consistent with his myths and that the fight between brothers might represent the war between fertility and death within Garth/Gray King himself? If he was said to live a thousand years, he might have began his life as Garth, and for some reason he went through some sort of transformation into the Gray King. His story seems kind of familiar to the Azor Ahai myth in that the Grey King also brought down the fire of the gods and might have been transformed by it. What do you think?
@TheDisputedLands

So I am a fan of LmL and we have been forum friends for several years so i have some insight into his ideas related to azor ahai. Ultimately lml is a fan of this theory and describes it as "required reading" in his garth of the gallows podcast. There is a possibility garth and the grey king could be the same legend, anything is possible. But the evidence i have found points to brothers rather than the same figure. The hints are all over the series, much of which was left out due to time constraints.

Very interesting - this motif of summer versus winter in the legends of fighting brothers. But with regards to Cain vs. Abel in the bible, I have heard an analysis of a theologist and historian, who tries to put the bible texts in context with the society and history of the middle east at the time they originated. And Cain vs. Abel is likely the struggle of people who started to settle down and started farming versus those who still had a nomadic life style and moved around, often with their droves. This was a time of huge sociological changes, and there were a lot of conflicts between the farming people in their villages and the nomads with their droves. And the fight of brother versus brother was such an event, that the stories about it were passed down from generation to generation. This was also the time when the time keeping changed. The early people and nomads had the moon as a time keeper, which resulted in Methusalem being over 900 "years" old - when you calculate his age in months instead of years you get something around 80 years - which was still a really old age for people in a time when the average life expectancy was 20 years. For the farmers the time keeper was the harvest, and in a warm climate without seasons this happened 2-3 times a year (in our time units). So when Abraham's wife Sarah had a son at age 90, she really was in her late 30s or early 40s. Fascinating, isn't it?

It’s a great observation that Bael/Abel/Balon/Baelor names are connected with kinslaying, but what about Petyr Baelish? Can’t find this around him.

Once more this is incredible. A lot to take in but incredible. The Ironborn have a lot of dark references as you presented. Perhaps you mentioned Wyk and I forgot but Wyk comes from Old English Wicca and is etymological related to Proto-Germanic Wikkô which means necromancer, sorcerer, warlock or witch. So an evil spellcaster. You showed the connections they have to the Hammer of the Waters (HotW). Do you believe this is connected to both HotW or the one that struck The Neck? Closest to the Arm of Dorne that was supposedly also struck by a HotW sits Sunspear which to me sounds like a reference to the comet striking and breaking the hypothesized second moon. Sunspear is the home of house Martell and Martell is Old French for Hammer. Dorne is also home to many people who's name refers to woods like Nymor being etymological related to the latin nemore or nemus which means open woodland, grove or glade. So Nymor Martell is in essences a hammer of the grove. All these allusions could ofcourse point to one single event, and Occam would agree, but could it also be a repeat of disasters? The Doom of Valyria happened much later and Planetos shows many distant locations ruined by some catastrophy. The Others are marching south in the asoiaf story without anything obvious having caused a second Long Night. If Euron does something Wyk-ed at Old Town it couldn't be the reason for the return of The Others because they are basically already at The Wall in the prologue of a Game of Thrones.

There is a theory that Theon kin slayed when he had the boys killed to fake the bodies of the Stark boys. He was known to have taken the (Butcher's if I remember correctly) boys' mother, so the boys nay have been his

Ive been working on a theory that Garth and Grey King werent brothers. Theyre the same guy. Garth died, was resurrected, and then became the Grey King. Hes also the Pearl Emperor, Barrow King, and Warg King. All different tales of a post-resurrection Garth.

I always figure Garth was based off Greek Mythology. Garth Greenhand - Gaia, Storm God - Zeus, Drowned God- Poseidon, and the Great other - Hades.
