I thinks you answered this scenario but I’ll still post it for other comments. CCW-So I have an AR pistol in my truck. Its under the back seat in an open top storage unit. It’s loaded and ready to be the life of the party. I go to a buddies and end up having a beer. I’m not drunk but I leave. What can I do to make it legal in case of encountering law enforcement? I think you answered the question. I would say my CCW no longer applies. I have to transport it like any other citizen transporting a handgun? I usually throw the mag in the glove box? Is that good?

You have to wait. I found this out when I wanted to pass on one of my fathers guns to my son. I had to hold onto it until he was 21. It can be "your" gun, but you may not take possession of it until you are 21.

Alonzo Knight you must wait. In states like Indiana where you have to be 21 to buy a gun (according to federal law), but the carry age is 18 in THAT state… You can have somebody buy it for you and you can carry it at the young age of 18

Okay so I live in Nebraska, so what if I carried a shotgun or rifle in my car? What do I need to do in order to do it legally. I do not have a CHL. Plus, I cannot put it in the trunk because I do not have one. I drive a Jeep Grand Cherokee.

The stupid part of the law is the part where the gun and ammo have to be separate, with the gun or ammo only available by leaving the vehicle. So if you are being approached by a criminal with a gun, what are you supposed to do? Ask him/her if you can get out and get into your trunk? LMAO. ohio law says you can't even fire any kind of firearem while inside a vehicle. so they expect you to get out of the vehicle and then fire it. but hold on just a min, you also have to try to get away first before you're allowed to defend yourself. ohio is turning into a communist state.

The gun must be empty and in a container with a closure such as zippers, snaps, velcro, etc. The magazine must be separate but doesn't have to be in a container. You could have a backpack with the gun in a zippered pocket and the magazine in your own pocket, or a separate pocket of the backpack. The law is very hard to read but this is the proper interpretation of it. codes.ohio.gov/orc/2923.16

Yea you can shoot if outside city limits. Has to be so many feet/yards away from a dwelling, not your house though, can't shoot in direction of dwellings, unless a backdrop, high hill is in place that would prevent hitting house, and I think that's it. Used to shoot all the time when I was in the country. In city now and I freaking hate it! Even though I still discharge my firearm at 12am new years! Lol! So do many others too! Fuck em!

@bert smith you're not required to be a set distance away from your own home, but from others around you, most def. do. Of course, that means you're liable for any damages and possible crime is damage happens to any other ppl during the time that youre shooting any set distance from your home. People are dumb, so they need thorough explaining! Not meaning you, or anyone really, but as a whole, from an intelligent perspective, people are really stupid and don't ever take a second to think about anything that really matters, or isnt about them in some way. Great content. Quick question. If the gun is in the back and stored properly (magazine separate and unloaded and/or loaded in a separate container), should the driver announce that the gun is in the back during a traffic stop? I know this is a requirement for CHL holders, but wasn't sure about transporting a gun to a range, etc. It seems to me that it's probably not a good idea to give law enforcement any reason to take notice of and/or confiscate firearms. Obviously if the officer asks, you tell the truth. But do you need to announce, "I have an unloaded gun in the trunk that I'm transporting to the range?" By the way... not talking about probable cause of a crime or anything. Just a routine speeding ticket or moving violation.

I don’t get it. I have to travel through Ohio and I want to have a sidearm with me. I can carry it openly anywhere but I will have to go through this kind of insanity. How exactly can I protect myself and my family while traveling if I have to put my sidearm in some case with the magazine separate?

Ohio is a constitutional carry (open carry) state (except for in a motor vehicle). We respect all states CCW permits! hope that helps...

Yes. In Ohio as long as you have a CHL you can have your gun loaded with one in the chamber, sitting on your lap, dashboard, cup holder, twirling around your finger, what ever feels right.

How to discuss the fact to police that a 10.5" AR pistol is in your trunk in a rack and you have a valid Ohio CHL. I worry the police will not know the difference between an SBR and an AR pistol.

That’s a great concern sir because most but not all police don’t know the law that they swear to uphold. I would carry in the vehicle documentation that proves the said gun is in fact a legal pistol. jmho

I was going to post the same thing. I'm not sure that I would use an attorney there's not familiar with Federal gun laws. A long gun has to be a minimum of 26" with a barrel of 16" for your rifle and 18" for a shotgun. It's worse for me in California because a semi-auto well I'm going must be at least 30".

He is not giving "advice" as a lawyer of any kind! He's simply giving what is called "legal information". In order for his to give advice, he would have to be a member of the BAR, and make an agreement between the parties he wanted to advise, with legal duties and obligations. To be technical, the lawyer gives absolutely 0 legal "advice" to anyone without agreement of such between parties. Just as you corrected him on facts of law, I felt compelled to inform you in a similar manner. "Legal advice" only occurs when contractual agreement places the lawyer in charge of proceedings on behalf of his client. Pretty much as if one would take regular advice of laws from a family member. Technical legalese is known simply as "legal information".

I bought the ARmA15 lock For the back seat of my pick up truck. It goes under the rear seat of my Dodge 1500 King cab. So if I secure my A.R. 15 with the lock all I have to do is have my ammunition in a separate bag with zipper or like a gun vault? And I believe I’m compliant in the state of Ohio ? Really interested in your feedback looking forward to your reply. if anybody has any questions about the ARmA15 it’s definitely a great investment given this day and age. I’m in the Akron area and I’ve always wondered about transporting firearms, mainly to the range and back home. This video was extremely helpful... I’ll get my CCW/CHL one of these days so I won’t have to worry about it. And you’re right, Ohio laws are very confusing. For as lenient as the gun laws are compared to other states, there are still those areas that can confuse you and land you in jail if you don’t know any better. I ride a motorcycle. And from what I ride and this video I’m assuming wearing my book bag gun in one part of the bag magazine in another, is legal. Do I have grounds. If on motorcycle back pack on (technically) I have to stop and get off to access anything in back pack (trunks are accessible through inside of most vehicles by button or pull and dropping the seat.) how to properly travel with firearm on motorcycle. I know this is an older video, but why in the hell do they make open carry in your personal vehicle, breaking the law, when open carry is legal? So if I am going to an ATM, and taking some cash out, and someone walks up to my window, I am not allowed to protect myself and my property unless I have a CHL? That is one totally stupid law. I want to know the WHY on this please. So without a CHL, when O walk to my truck to get in, I first have to unload my gun, unload the magazine, put them all separate from each other. I have a CHL. I do not like having the firearm in a holster on my side cause it digs into me and I find myself to be more vulnerable especially wearing my seatbelt. I don’t care for the gimmicky dash holsters because it’s too obvious. I prefer to place the firearm under my leg with the muzzle facing the door. From a position of advanced training and skill I’m sure you can appreciate the advantages this provides, yes it has its cons. Mainly for the individual who is inexperienced. Ohio needs to be changed up a little because I thought if it wasn't classified as a pistol and has an OAL of 24, or anything less than 26 it was considered an SBR/SBS per the NFA.

How does all of this apply to AR Pistols. I would assume, by the wording of the handgun definition, and ar pistol would be considered "of short stock" and be less than 26 inches in length with a barrel less than 16 inches as well as operational by 1 hand. Am I on the right track?

So since I dont have a C.H.L can I carry my gun on my hip holster unloaded with loaded magazines in the trunk since that would require me to exit the vehicle in load it. I ask because since I open carry I keep my gun and loaded magazines in my weapon box in the trunk and when I get out and go about my day but first have to load my gun as a black man, unfortunately I get many many looks and fear things could escalate due to ppl ignorance

I would say no because while in your vehicle the gun is unable to be seen therefore it’s concealed but while out in public it’s on your hip uncovered & visible. jmho

If you don't have a CHL then it has to be inaccessible to you while your in the vehicle. Your mag can be loaded, but must be in a separate "enclosure" from the pistol. If you have a CHL it can be fully loaded with one in the chamber in plain view if you'd like it to be easily accessible. In Ohio you can drive around with it on your dashboard if you'd like, as long as you have your permit
