For me the value of Azzarello's 'Joker' is not that this is the deadliest or most insane Joker - we've seen that with Emperor Joker, Morrison's bioweapons-terrorist Joker, etc. It's that he feels much more like a grounded gangland 'character'. We understand how he 'works' as a criminal and you can see why some people like Johnny and Croc find him charismatic and want to work with him even though he has a reputation for being unpredictably violent. It's Joker as Dillinger or Capone. As a note - when he gets Johnny to pass him the shovel near the start wrapped in the blanket, it's so the people following them think Joker has a shotgun.

I actually like the Joker characterization in this comic aside from the really grimdark shit that is almost too iffy and grounded for the Joker (I'm talking about what he does to Frost's wife), but that last scene where Batman goes 'to mock you' isn't great, not because the line is dumb---it actually is pretty cool. BUT. Batman would never tell Joker, known for his incredibly neurotic behavior, something that would undoubtedly piss him off while he's holding a guy at gunpoint, but he does anyway, and Joker shoots Johnny and Batman just... runs past him. Nice one hero.

I remember this before the Christopher Nolan films because of the way they made the riddler look and for some reason when Batman was rebooted the rumor was Johnny drop was going to play riddler and have him and his crew in all these super up cars

Omg, I been waiting FOREVER for Rob to do this story. I'm so happy you finally decided to do these OG stories while it's a little hiatus or nothing new in comics is coming out, YET. I really dig these. I hope you do That Dark Horse The Mask story that takes place years after the other ones. It's so good to hear your renowned vigor for telling how these stories went down, Rob. I swear every time he gets excited I'm dying laughing. I also saw the vid of Benny passing, and it broke me to see how it affected you, and so many other people. You guys are LITERALLY the catalysts of the comic book nerdom community even waay before the MCU. Love bro, we NEED more of these. 😂😂🤣📠📠🔥🔥🔥🥳📠📠🖤🖤❤️❤️💯💯🙏🏾🙏🏾🥹😊

15:02 Didn’t he skin a dude alive? That doesn’t count as a crime or something?

We didn't see him do it...

Not a fan of this broody, unfunny hissyfit Joker. Or this Batman, for the one page that he's shown handling a delicate hostage situation by dropping a sick burn.

I used to like Brian Azzarello but noticed that rape and sexual assault is very prevalent in his works.

Yeah, it is just unnecessary. We already know the villains are bad guys. He also writes sexual assault in a way that almost ignores the victim and instead focuses more on the reactions of those around.

Imagine if someone made an open world game where you were the Joker and you just TERRORIZED people in Gotham with everything you had at your disposal, knowing that somewhere, *Batman* was waiting to stop you.

Hearing Rob read this comic reminds me of when I first started watching TWD TV show on Netflix, and when I first got to the Saviors on the night Glenn died. For awhile at that point in the story it felt like that feeling of fear had largely disappeared but seeing Negan, and the way he behaved gave me Joker vibes because I hadn’t yet learned what made him who he was/lead his behavior. Eventually however I grew to see little glimpses of what were his redeeming qualities. Making his monstrous facade peel away. His refusal to let Sasha be assaulted, and refusal to kill kids that could potentially pose a threat to him just because they were children made me love him because he wasn’t as much of the big bad wolf he wanted everyone to believe.
