About the looks example, it also goes the other way around. If you hear of someone as a nice, caring, inspiring person and don't know what they look like, you'll be inclined to imagine them as a good looking person, and also to think of them as more attractive when you actually meet them. But it also has a lot to do with someone's personal bias. If they've been treated poorly by good looking people and now see it as a bad thing, it'll have the opposite effect on them.

being somewhat a good person isn't that hard. a persons body an face warps to what the inside is. ugly people have it very easy too. 👍 they dont have to work out, or eat right, or stop eating, or bathe, or move from the tv ever, or try to learn how to look good (which obviously is very hard an people get paid mad cash to teach these skills an do makeup . these people often just sit in front of a tv eating tasty foods from the womb to the doom. if thats not the eaisest thing on earth then i bet you got a dog in the tv arena
@Gaminboi2864
@Gaminboi2864 2 жыл бұрын
@@ShawnJonesHellion I would disagree, because just because you aren't attractive doesn't mean you shouldn't take care of yourself. In fact, neglecting self care can really effect your mental health, and when people treat you as an ugly person definitely doesn't help. These feelings can cause the person to feel self hate, develop depression, or become horrible people to others. Being attractive doesn't prevent a person from being bad though, if they are often given the benefit of the doubt for doing bad things, they may also become narcissistic in nature and may believe themselves to be more important than others around them. Being attractive will allow people to like you from the get go and give you advantages, making life easy, but it won't make a person good. Self-care and understanding is important for everyone for people to live life to its fullest. But that's just my thoughts.

I can confirm some of this is true, I am a nurse and in my personal time I dress quite casual and don't make much of a effort apart from being clean. The way people treat me in comparison to when I'm well groomed and in my nurses uniform is night and day. I am discounting patients in this comment, because obviously people are going to be nicer if you are responsible for treating them. The difference is astounding. X

When I was running my business I mainly did face painting for kids at public events or parties. On the odd occasion I painted with someone alongside, the public tended to queue up for my lesser skilled team mate more than me and rarely I even got 'off' looks from people in the queues. When it was like that I tended to give the element of surprise each time I finished a painting. I can only assume they thought my better looking teamate was more skilled 😔

I just heard of the halo effect for the first time today and your video is the first I decided to watch about it. One thing you didn’t mention that I’m wondering about is if our judgment of attractive/not attractive and correlating non physical attributes is something that’s human nature or is it a learned unconscious response to observation of parents, peers, media etc.? Because even though I just learned the term for this, I’ve certainly noticed the truth of it, and the effects of it on most people. However I’ve also noticed that some people aren’t as easily influenced by people’s physical appearance as others. For example my adult child who’s on the autism spectrum would have strong opinions about people when younger and still now, that she either liked or disliked based on things like a teacher she didn’t like had “dark” eyes. This came up because I thought two different teachers were the same person, they looked very similar, both very attractive and it was the first few days at a new school. So I was trying to get her to explain to me which one she didn’t like. So I asked what colour eyes the other teacher had? She said they were “both brown”, but the one she didn’t like had “dark eyes, like more angry.” I suppose you could argue that maybe the kinder teacher was therefore more “physically attractive”because of her outward, kinder eyes. However that’s just the only specific example I can think of. She’d also automatically act either more comfortable or less comfortable around different people within seconds of meeting them and it would often surprise me because many of the people she’d immediately like were the people most would judge as not physically attractive at all! I think I just answered the second part of my question. People can appear more or less attractive depending on their personality or even mood, especially over time, and it varies among people who might be more sensitive to seeing a bit deeper. However it still doesn’t answer if this effect is human nature or nurture/cultural brain washing for lack of a better term. Western culture is very obsessed with physical appearance. I wonder if this effect is as profound in other cultures, particularly ones with less exposure to media?

I completely disagree when you said less attractive people are more likely to become smarter, be kinder, study harder, and be better people. That just sounds like a judgment against attractive people. The only attractive people who obsess about their looks and use them exclusively to get things are the shallow ones. And the ones who judge them based only on looks are also shallow. I've seen countless examples of attractive people who were kind, good, smart, studied and worked hard, etc. Their focus was on something deeper than their looks. So there are both kinds of people in both categories.

@LittleLulubee
@LittleLulubee 7 жыл бұрын
Some attractive women are unfriendly because they have many men try to pick up on them every day, and some of those men are very rude, so they get tired of it and put up a wall to deflect unwanted attention (for the record, there's NOTHING wrong with respectful men picking up on women, I'm not saying that at all). And some attractive women may seem unfriendly because they've been treated in an unfriendly way by less attractive women who are jealous of them. So in both cases, that's understandable. However, there are many attractive women who are super friendly. I don't think friendliness is related to how attractive you are.

Its usually okay to judge a book by a cover. An attractive girl normally likes to play hard to get, and normally deals with more men than unattractive girls. Therefore, the attractive girl has a higher tendency to ignore your texts, ignore your hangouts, or just be a general bitch. Not saying all attractive girls are like that, but don't be surprised when an attractive girl starts acting entitled, because you would have seen it a mile away.

You see I’m shy and the loner type, but I’m considered attractive by my friends and strangers. This could be a bad thing when trying to pick up girls though. They tend to think I’m stuck up, or believe that I believe I’m to good for them. In parties it’s fortunately easy, since I’m drunk and have courage enough to speak to woman. Usually I’d say 90% of time I get lucky. So there’s definitely perks. But I’m getting tried of parties and one night stands. However, good looks cause unfair judgment. I come home late a few times, and my girl thinks I’m out there cheating. That relationship ended quickly. So we might have it easy when it comes to sex, but when it comes to long stable relationships, it’s kinda of a curse. Also, people won’t leave you alone. Had one girl that made it her mission to change my personality, b/c she thought I was some kind of mysterious bad boy. When in fact I’m just a nerdy guy that likes playing video games. Im honestly thinking of getting a little a fat so people can stop bothering me lol

People want someone who looks attractive, everyone wants eye candy. Sex sells, even if you're not selling sex. Lets face it the good looking waitress, or bartender is going to make damn good tips, because they look good. An ugly person no matter how experienced will be lucky if they get any tips at all. I know some places that will only hire beautiful women, because beautiful women can get a LOT more people / suckers, to spend their money, and it's not just in paying job places either. This also applies to some non-profit organizations that have volunteers. I can think of one in particular. An animal rescue in Los Angeles that will only allow good looking attractive women and men to volunteer for them ( NO ugly and or fat people allowed even though it's all volunteers ) because it's a good business practice help promote their business. Although they rescue animals. They also promote the whole vegan lifestyle and an ugly, and /or fat person does not fit that healthy lifestyle. Even though they are not as bluntly open up front about promoting veganism unless you take a tour of the place. Their main goal is re-homing animals they rescue, and only good looking women and men can successfully do that. Lets face it. Only sexy beautiful women can get lots of people/ suckers to donate thousand of dollars to their organization. If I were running such an organization? I wont lie. I would hide behind the camera ( not in front of it ) and only hire beautiful women and men to promote my business, because even I know that beautiful women can get thousands of people to donate a lot of money. So it does make sense if you're running a business and you wanna be a successful business that really brings in the money. It is true the good looking beautiful women will get you lots of channel views more subscribers too, and they will get a lot more people donating to your organization or business. Nobody wants to see an ugly woman and it's bad for business when you need suckers to donate to your cause.

Look my mind portraits itself as alpha and competitive and beautiful and ugly. So now lets imagine me and my mind act as a supervisor and someone comes in me and my mind have to judge. If hes super beautiful and attractive to my mind then my mind might treat him badly because hes perceived as competition. So this is one example that shows that no matter what you are or ehat you do it can always turn out good or bad for you. Its all relative. It doesnt matter. Relax

@marsollansley9720
@marsollansley9720 Жыл бұрын
Does the Halo effect only applies to good looking people or things? what if you had a different perspective in life; what if you were grown to believe that attractive people are generally dumb and untrustworthy because you think 'they're nothing but 'ATTRACTIVE' and that they don't have the merit to be trustworthy and capable because you think it's they're attractiveness that only let them far as they've come, and so, you are more inclined to believe that the less attractive person is more efficient, trustworthy and intelligent because you believe they'd be, because they're less attractive and less attractive people are efficient, trustworthy and intelligent because they make up for their lack of attractiveness with hardwork and all that.

Anonymous Pop, I like how you didn't state that attractive people are like that; simply just sharing your personal experience that caused you to create that view of how you see attractive people. I agree(from personal experience) that the majority of people I met in my life that resemble that "attractive" appearance, really are highly egotistical. Not all the "attractive" people I know are like that though, just the majority. I don't judge people on first impression when meeting someone. I just observe their personality and style over time while getting to know them. After a while of knowing the person, is when I collect that observation and file it in my head to know how I view that person. From what I noticed, highly egotistical people are people that feel like they look better than others, instead of being "attractive " making them egotistical. It's just so amazing how diverse each person's opinions are. What someone finds beautiful, another will find ugly. Labeling personalities and appearances have just been build up by what the majority of people think from personal experiences. So that's why we grow up with these labels that are formed by society's influence. In highschool, my first boyfriend was a guy that the majority of people didn't find attractive. Tall, gothic, always a black hoodie, and a wild fro, he looked dark and mysterious, but he was different from the majority of guys in our school, which is what got me drawn to him. Becoming his friend made me see a brighter side of him. Among his friends, he was a comedian 😄. His style and personality was very opposite from mine's, which is way many people were shocked when they noticed us holding hands in school 😂😂😂. Beauty is truly in the eye of the beholder 👍 We can break judgmental labels, but we can't break an open eye. It's not a bad thing to have your personal judgement. We should always consider our experiences and instincts before judging someone, to be on the safe side; and not pay too much attention to society labels, so we're more open with meeting new people. Anonymous Poop, without seeing you in person and just seeing your comment, profile picture, and name, I already have an idea of how your personality is. Your comment shows that you're kind of open with sharing your opinion. Since you mentioned that opinion was from your experience, you show that you mean no disrespect for people who would disagree. You're not fully opened because you dont feel it's necessary to explain a long explanation about your experience(like me 😂lol). So you just speak your opinion short and straight to the point. From my observation, you're personality is reserved, but still kind of open to talk, chill, humorous since you chose a mysterious and funny name. Your profile picture reminds me of Flash, but I can't see clear enough to tell if that's a lightning or an "i" on the character's chest Lol...im being too random and made this too wordy...sorry 👀 I just got interested in this topic and got carried away.

From my experience as a not very attractive person myself, while attractive people tend to be self centered, they also tend to be nicer and more open, specially to us uglier folk, because they never had to think about looks, were always treated well and are therefore not as judging and not bitter about it. Lots of not so good looking people are bitter and obsessed with being at least better than others so they'll make fun of and put down anyone they can to feel better and will obsess over looks. I have been treated poorly all my life based on looks, but more often than not by people who are just as bad or worse than me in that department. Good looking guys are more judgy, specially to women, but are usually at least not douches. But good looking girls are usually nice because they're not worried about it. Maybe super pretty people are assholes. But most of the above average ones are pretty ok. They don't even think about looks much.
@mabelidove6813
@mabelidove6813 7 жыл бұрын
Rahvi , it's so sad how shallow some people can be obsessing over looks. Girls who are considered beautiful by society, usually suffer with knowing which people to trust because they attract bad guys and good guys. But some bad guys make themselves appear kind towards the pretty girls, just to win over their body, and once they got what they wanted, the jump over to another one that catches their eye, leaving the pretty girl behind heart broken. So many beautiful people tend to be tough in love because they don't know who is attracted to them by looks or by who they are, so they need to keep their guard up so they dont get heart broken again. But that's just how some people would act because i'm sure many others would change differently after heart breaks. Hopefully over time people become mere accepting over others. Before there was stronger judgement. So if over time, society is less stereotypical towards women, men, races, and religions, then I have faith teat later on in humanity, people will end all this labeling judgement and finally love with pure hearts. Rahvi, if you haven't found someone that appreciates who for who you are as a person, it's their loss for judging appearance before even getting to know you. You know yourself better than anyone else knows you, so be proud of your self-worth by embracing it and not letting society's hate get to you. If you feel really insecure about your appearance, exersize to make yourself feel more comfortable and confident about yourself. Dont exersize for others, do it for yourself 💗. People are more attracted to confidence than looks. But got to pay attention to the difference between being confident and being too confident(being cocky). No one is attracted to egotistical people no matter how good they look. So stay humble and you'll attract good people you can trust and they want judge 😊

Mabeli Dove you’re somewhat on point about my personality trait(and yes that is the flash). However, I am currently a freshmen in high school, and a lot of people at my school are very arrogant and undisciplined. Many of the pretty attractive girls at my school tend to either be hoes or care about recognition. Just giving you a little bit of my experience and how my opinion came to be :).

Hello again. I enjoyed the video but something about it reminded me a bit of some of the videos I've seen by "Academy of Ideas" (AOI). Do you know of them? They're one of the best sources of knowledge, philosophy and psychological insight out there. They and you are my two favorites when it comes to self-discovery videos. Here's one of their most recent videos, I think you'll enjoy it. It's about self-reliance (it's one of their shortest in length.) kzbin.info/www/bejne/hn2zkq2CYtyWra8 I'd be interested in you exploring some of the same topics they've covered - being authentic, the individuation process, the fear of greatness, the psychology behind such things as envy, self-deception, conformity and social justice, among others. They go beyond psychology and into sociology, philosophy and even metaphysics and spirituality. I'd be most interested in your opinion of them.

I've found the majority of ugly people are funny, majority of plain looking people are intelligent and majority of good looking people are nice, perhaps this is how life treats them so they become it? Therefore the majority of us all have a chance & all the victims in life have probably created it all by themselves.
