The Hardest Part About Raising Chickens - We Are Very Upset

It has been a really tough week here at our farm. Our favorite chicken, Dorothy passed away and we are very sad. Just wanted to update you guys on what is going on here, it's not always rainbows and sunshine.

I am sorry for your loss. I lost my budgie in May, too. I still have 2 hens in my back yard, and one of my girls seems to care about me even more since I lost the budgie. Thank you so much, I would always say how human-like Dorothy's little eyes were when she would fall asleep on our lap and she would open her little eyes for second, almost just to check that we were still there. Sucks we lost her so soon, we expected a few more years from her. That coffee mug will be extra special to us now (it already was, but still) We also just watched your new video this morning during coffee, we had a really busy week and we were now able to sit and relax for a little bit and thought, oh my, we just published a similar video by chance. It was a very good video, and so sorry about the loss of your little angry Marshmello, you made Kelly and I cry during your video too. It's very hard losing your pets, it doesn't matter what they are. I adore my chickens, and they are my close friends. It is very hard when they leave us here in physicality, I am crushed every time it happens. I guess the way to look at is that the unconditional love they give us is worth the pain we experience with them transitioning. They are always with us in their spirit form. Much love to you!

We've had several of them pass in the lat few years, but this one hurt a little extra, she was just such a special one, even though she was not a fancy breed or anything. We loved all our chickens so much and we try and give the best possible life. Thanks for your kind words.

@@BockBockBouquet I can imagine, I had to put down one of my favorite girls due to an injury that couldnt heal and nothing else was left to be done on our end. My husband and I cried for days, and I still do, even now as I am typing this. I absolutely adore my girls, they are my family. I love how others like you can relate to the pain that "just a chicken"'s loss can cause. I had to focus on my other girls and immerse myself into their love for me and my love for them to put that pain aside, but I will forever miss her.

Ahh no poor pet. I lost one called Monty. She was sweet. Nearly bald when I got her as a former battery hen so I called her Monty. And she grew the most magnificent feathers. I only had her over a year. 😢

She knows she was loved. You were always there for her, and she knew it. Here in south Mississippi, you can kill somebody who’s trying to do harm to your pets or livestock, so we get it. Find strength and comfort in the relationship that you had with Dorothy. Your pets are blessed to be under your care.

We lost our first and so far only naturally hatched hen, she was doing so well too. one day I did a head count. we had ten hens a one rooster but that particular day I counted 10 total and couldn't find her anywhere until I connected with an online homestead community and somebody mentioned that they had found their hen buried under the deep bedding in the run. I went out to look and sure enough I saw her little foot sticking up out of the ground. I was so heart broken to see our "Sweet Girl" that way. I gave her a proper resting place. Its comforting to know that we can all grieve normally with this process of life. 12 days ago we lost our precious Koa bean, out 11/2 yrold kitten possibly to air prey. She is an indoor cat but snuck outside due to her natural curiosity. My son belives she is coming back. Its been hard for sure all balling my eyes out for days I know now is totally normal. Last night, a mountain lion got into our coop, and killed six of our chickens. We loved them all, but especially our buff Orpington, Slayer. It has been so hard. I am sorry you are grieving too. Chickens give us so much, they deserve the best life.

@@BockBockBouquet I thought you might appreciate hearing what happened the day after the first attack (yes, there was a second, and we lost our six week old Bielefelder rooster and hen). We are working on getting our security shorn up, and have the chickens on twenty four hour watch, until such is achieved. My wife and I put together an herbal medicine liquid extract, made from rose petals and bleeding heart leaves and flowers (we run an herbal medicine clinic). The purpose of this mixture was to help process grief (it is more of a ritualistic mixture, rather than a physiologically active medicine). We were using it ourselves, and were going to put it in the chicken’s water and dustbath (at very dilute dosage, again, more for ritualistic purposes). As we were dropping the medicine into the dust bath, both of our surviving Rhode Island Reds (Rey and Bartock) literally were jumping up to drink the medicine out of the dropper as we were dropping it into the dust bath. I have never seen them jump to eat anything out of our hands before. It seemed like they somehow knew what the medicine was for. After that, I sat down on the floor of the run and had a good cry. Bartock came and sat on my lap, and Rey was gently rubbing her beak on my knee. It is hard to explain, but I could tell that they were trying to comfort me. We love our chickens, and chickens in general. Again, I am sorry about your loss of your hen as well. I can tell how much you both love your chickens. We are new to the chicken world. We decided to get chickens in May. My husband built our coop and run.. The coop sits on a pedestal and my husband fenced it in so the chickens could go underneath.. We have a large door on the coup, outside of the run for easy access. My friend who raises chickens brought us 5 pullets, all different breeds. What we thought were 5 hens became 4 with and our beautiful Roo. We quickly became very attached and we named them. Every night we would sit outside and watch them get ready to settle down and head into the coop. We quickly realized that chickens are very smart. We had our favorite for sure. Our little polish we named Punky. She was like your Dorothy. She was the first to greet us and the last to say goodnight. My husband rakes the run every night or at the least every other night. We also remove their wastes from the coop daily. One morning, the girls were in the run so my husband took that time to change out the bedding. He decided to use a bigger rake, which is louder. All of a sudden he heard a bang followed with another one. He heard squawking. He dropped to his knees and saw Punky flopping around. He quickly tore off the chicken wire and grabbed her and held her. She died in his arms. He thinks that maybe the sound of the rake scared her and she jumped, hitting her head on the coop above. He thinks she broke her neck. He called me at work. He was devastated. We both cried for days. I have to say, it was enough for us to consider giving it up.. Instead, we have decided to build a bigger run in the spring and my husband will be building a chicken tractor so we can move them to different areas of our lawn so they can have fresh grass and treats. I stumbled across your KZbin videos and I have learned a lot from you. Thank your for sharing your flock and experiences.

Oh I am so sorry for your loss! 😭😭💖 We are first time chicken owners and I am so in love with them! We raised from chicks and didn’t realize we had two roosters who were very sweet. They were sex link so we just thought they were larger and the alpha hens. We are not permitted roosters and when they started crowing at 14 weeks, we knew we had to re home them. I cried so badly when the family came to pick them up and miss them even though I know they are doing well and together with a nice family who wanted them both. We have seen a few pics of them with their new flock and they seem to fit right in, which makes me very thankful.

That picture is priceless! So sorry for your loss! I know how upsetting it is to loose a favourite. I too have a favourite hen who was recently sick. I told my wife about it and she said she fed her a peach that day and was worried she did wrong. I was worried Chiquita (the hen) tried to eat the pit because they have a bit of poison in them, but in the end she had an upset tummy from eating too much peach (she is a good eater)! We were so happy she is OK!

They truly don't live long enough. But like I tell my daughter, they may have taught us what they were here for.....love, kindness, patience, healing....and maybe they are tired in this body now and it is time for them to rest. I just saw this video after losing one of my girls last night! I hate it when they get sick as I have so little knowledge, and our local vets don't either! I only discovered this one was sick yesterday, and she vomited a lot of liquid when I picked her up. I thought that may have helped. It's really hard when you don't know why they die. I feel your pain. I’m sorry, You had given me some advice about my 9 year old Buff Orpington, Buttercup who was losing weight very quickly despite all the supplementing I was doing. Ok, I rarely comment on videos but when you guys started talking about your hen I just started crying because I lost my little ameraucana, Mia, in July & it was one of the most heartbreaking events of my life. That little hen was so precious to me. She wasn't sick. She had been acting like her normal silly self. I had given grapes to her & another hen who were up on my deck. 1/2 or so later I walked up the steps of deck & she was laying there dead. I'm sure neighbors heard me scream as I scooped her up & brought her in the house. I just dropped to my knees & sobbed like I am now while I am doing this. Its very difficult to explain to people how much your chicken meant to you because to most people (even myself at one time) its just a chicken. Thank you for sharing your experience.

Aw I’m so sorry about your poor Mia. That is so heartbreaking. Sounds like a heart attack since it was so sudden, which does happen to chickens sometimes. Reminds me of my sweet ameraucana hufflepuff, I called her puff. And she would always walk up to me to be picked up for cuddles and beard rubs. I still want to tear up thinking about how special she was as well

Awww This is sad. I see nothing wrong about you both feeling this way. They become part of the family. Last year my cat was hit by a car & my dog passed away last November & still miss them both very much. I have a rooster that is now 10 yrs old. He's very special to my youngest daughter & myself. My daughter was there when he hatched. It'll be tough when he's gone too. He has such a character & so beautiful. 💕

That sucks. My first chicken is a Rhode island red her name is Mother Clucker. My favorite chicken of all. Hope she lives to be 20 years old. I've had 20 chickens killed this year and she was the sole survivor 2 times it happened. She likes when I take the pitch fork into the coupe and stir the straw around she looks for bugs. She let's me pick her up and pet her. She is only a year old and lays 5 to 6 eggs a week

Good to hear she has survive some attacks! First time layers keep laying all through the winter on their first season. They all naturally slow down during the short winter months every year after. Enjoy your cute baby and give her hugs every day!

The video you shared of the last day I believe not sure if that was the last last or just an example of the type of fake kisses but wanted to ask if she had looked that pale all the time because my mom had a chicken that looked the same before she had passed except her comb was a little flopped and she didn’t walked much (was thinking maybe something a wild bird might had given them or something and maybe her immune system was down to get a real hold of her 🙁 ALSO after just seeing your Fowl Tick video and all the blood involved when trying to smash and get rid of them do you think they (ticks) were around when this occurred and it had a hand in her passing (being anemic and pale)? Just some thoughts. And again I am so so sorry I don’t think I have ever cried no I don’t think I KNOW I have never ever cried so much in my life and to be completely honest I still do 😩 losing one of my girls. I love them so so much

Aw thank you so much, and thank you for sharing with us. Yes when she was feeling her best she would have a thick full red comb. And whenever she would molt her comb would shrivel and get pale. We held off on filming the tick video so we think they were unrelated to her passing as it was a few months apart, but could never rule out completely that may have been apart of it. We will never know now but we think about her and miss her everyday ❤️

You both brought tears to my eyes while I was eating. I love how you both love your chickens so much, I lost two of my hens this year, I buried them next to each other and I miss them every day. I’m sorry for your loss of her I really do feel for you I lost my first and favourite chicken 2 weeks ago she was a Ayam Cemani called Shaniqua yes I know what a name but I loved her she got me through a really bad time in my life when I just come home from Afghanistan I raised her from a chick and she was the sweetest girl I normally don’t cry at anything but I did when I lost her i couldn’t stop myself she would sit and fall asleep on me or jump on my shoulder she was wonderful I do really feel for you but I just think she will be happy in chicken heaven hope you guys are good be ok

Am so sorry! I lost my two favourite hens this year (1 in particular was my lap hen Nugget and she just loved people) as well as losing our amazing cat Pix. He protected the girls despite being a hunter and him and Nugget used to try and push each other off to get to sit on our laps. It's never easy when we lose a pet.. I'm sorry for your loss 😢. Dorothy is very similiar to our first chicken we got a few months ago, a Rhode island red. She was a stray chicken we took in. Now, we have a small little flock because of how much we loved her and became obssessed with chickens. I can totally relate. Thank you for sharing and unfortunately, pets don't live as long. The best we can do is give them the best life though which is what you did for Dorothy and all your pets. ❤️ They are very loved. Praying for strength for you both 🙏
