I get asked to critique a lot of peoples work and usually they are people I have never met. So, critiquing their work is not an emotional thing, meaning I don't have a personal connection with them.
But when I get asked to critique a friends work I have to be very careful how I word things. Don't get me wrong, I don't change the harshness level or let them slide on certain things. I simply try and watch my words and the message I am getting across.
My long time friend Taylor whos first introduction to a DSLR was when I handed her a D3000 with a 35 1.8 has come a long way in her photographic journey. Since that time in 2011 she has continued to shoot, picking up different cameras and lenses but rarely asking me for my opinion.
The reason she never asked my opinion is she knows how opinionated I am. Plus she knew if she brought up a subpar lens that my answer would be swift and harsh.
Now she is out taking real paying jobs, she is shooting weddings, baby portraits, candids and pretty much anything that catches her eye.
I am not sure if she asked me for this critique or I asked to see her top 10. But I wanted to see her progression from 2011 until now.
When it comes to critiquing peoples work in my opinion it's not about finding and ripping every small mistake. It's about finding those issues but giving positive reinforcement to how they can be corrected or changed.
It makes zero sense to rip someone totally down to the point where they feel like they have failed as a photographer. This may work for some but that's not how I like to learn nor how I want to critique others.
I chose not to look at any of her images before doing the critique. I wanted you all to see my honest reaction as soon as I saw the images.
What is great about having these sets on flickr is I can see the meta data. I can see what lens, what modes and a bunch of other data that helps me point someone in a direction.

Jared, you give very honest critique. My only gripe is that it often appears the first thing you look at is the metadata. At that point you sometimes begin to critique the gear and/or settings used rather than the image. I would like to see you challenge yourself to critique images with no idea about gear or settings. After the image gets an honest critique based on its own merits, then use gear and settings info to "enhance" the critique, or offer suggestions. Just my two cents!
@DilPower
@DilPower 9 жыл бұрын
sgav8r agree 100 % it gives more value to the critique hiding the settings at first and just starring at the image alone... it's like an MD giving you a working hypothesis from the medical exam and then checking the MRI results to see if that is the correct diagnosis by determining which exact part of your body went haywire.
@none377
@none377 6 жыл бұрын
I agree, but sometimes you could get more out of the image if you would've used different settings and with that the critique would be useful for getting the best out of the shot.
@JsGarage
@JsGarage 6 жыл бұрын
I think that he looks at the image and after he gets his initial impression good or bad it helps identify how shooter could improve through the metadata. There is a lot to learn about why an imagine looks the way it does through metadata and ways to recommend improvement in technique. I think the metadata is very revealing to where he photographer is lacking at least on the technical side of shooting.

***** Appart from stuff looking better in manual, I feel it's also a lot more *fun* to shoot manually. Especially when you're new to this stuff like me. I love experimenting with the settings, making the same shot a few times with different ones and really trying what works best. I've been in manual from the start, when I had no idea what I was doing at all. Half of my photo's were complete fail, but it was a real fun learning experience.
@rexbobcat
@rexbobcat 9 жыл бұрын
***** Shooting manual isn't necessarily that big a deal once you understand what you're doing. If you know how to shoot manually, it's sometimes much easier and efficient to shift into Aperture Priority if you think the camera will be able to predict the proper exposure more quickly than you can.

Matheus Lisboa Barreto sure you can, just need to use exposure lock to recompose and shoot. The advantage of Manual is it makes it easier to reproduce the good exposure once you’ve found it, with aperture priority you’d have to meter, lock, focus, compose every shot.
@michieltummers1303
@michieltummers1303 8 жыл бұрын
You can be an advanced photographer and shoot in Aperture priority ;) It means you have a grip how light works and you can work around that with EC if needed. For the things i do , manual mode is extremely inefficient. I do agree it is more fun to shoot in manual mode though, but for me "efficiency counts". I know many pro's who shoot in aperture priority, it isn't just for beginners. No critique towards manual mode btw, it can be quite useful, i use it for Triggertrap and filterwork.
@MontageReflex
@MontageReflex 8 жыл бұрын
+Michiel Tummers Honestly, the day I got my DSLR, i started shooting manual and skipped any other mode and i've never messed with AP, SP, or anything since... For me, manual is as efficient as it gets. Even when shooting fast paced sunsets/sunrise where im trying to get as many shots in as possible. Few cases require me to change anything but my shutter speed and its always only a few clicks... But I can see how other types of photography, in door especially, can prove AP as more efficient.

Nothing wrong with Aperture priority. Your meter will still say the same no matter what mode your in. The use of exposure compensation is more important than using manual mode.
@DerSystematiker
@DerSystematiker 9 жыл бұрын
+korgscrew2000 You have to change exp. comp every time and/or perspective changes. Or you set it once and use the lock. But any way you have to remember to reset the comp. afterwards or you will potentially screw up future shots. In manual you have to set your exposure once and as long as the light doesn't change to can shot.

Jared Polin How come you don't tell people how to properly use aperture priority? There are tips like spot metering, exposure comp, and reading the scene. Even if she were in manual for some of those shots, her meter is still going to read the same way. While I agree that shooting in manual has major benefits, understanding your meter and scene have a lot to do with it, too.
@DilPower

I would personally prefer hearing a picture has motion blur first rather than the low speed of the shutter settings... as much as I understand technique is important, I feel artistic approach such as composition are much more interesting. I guess many people would probably disagree but it feels like looking for spelling mistakes when all you want to know is whether your essay is a compelling read.

I don't get the comments bellow about Aperture Priority. If you use the camera's light meter to gauge the exposure then Aperture mode is basically the same as Manual where the shutter speed is automatically given instead of your having to dial it in. BUT YOU GET THE EXACT SAME SETTINGS. Why are people saying that pictures taken in Manual mode look better? NONSENSE! What makes a bad exposure is the wrong combination of Aperture and Shutter, not the mode you used to get to that combination! It seems that a lot of photographers out there don't understand how their cameras work.

+mark thode Aperture priority workflow: 1. Set aperture 2. Set ISO 3. Set exp. comp. 4. Set exp. lock 5. take shots 6. reset exp. comp. Manual mode workflow: 1. Set Aperture 2. Set Shutter 3. Set ISO 4. take Shots. ...what's wrong with that? I don't have to change the settings as long as the light on my subject doesn't change. I don't have to check the comp. I don't have to check whether or not the exp. lock is enabled or not and more important what expose did I lock? Why should I use aperture priority? Basically using a semi-auto mode and then override the auto part - with TWO workaround methods. I rather use manual because because it make me think about the scene, the light and how I want to picture to turn out.

Aperture priority isn't the problem. If you don't use the metering the right way, you would get exactly the same images in Manual. I always use spot metering (Canon 5D2) in aperture priority and pick my metering reference point (most of the time the subject) and let the camera do the math with the shutter speed. About the ring+shoes shot: no blurring was added. At this close distance (I think it is about 40cm (16") distance, the DoF is only 1.2cm (0.5").

In my opinion, she is on the right path. You can see she is trying to be creative and it works in some shots. I personally don't have a problem with Aperture Priority, if you are in the right aperture, shoot in raw and know how to use Photoshop, you should be fine. I just didn't like one thing and that is that she didn't stay with D7000 and kept improving her skills before upgrading to a better camera like the D610.

Jared, thank you for giving your opinion on the images. I don't happen to agree with you on all of your critique, but you do hit on some good points. Jared I love your work and this series, but please stop bashing the Aperture priority, I get what you are saying but in many of the picture here that's not really the issue. From what I saw the problem probably was the wrong metering mode or an erroneous exposure compensation. I don't feel like aperture mode is wrong at all, you just have to keep in mind the limitations. Manual is all fine but sometimes it makes you miss photos, especially if you are shooting in a very dynamic environment. This is just MHO but I feel like a beginner might misinterpret what you where saying. Keep up the good work!

Great criticism. I find it to be fair - you're also making a point of saying when it's your taste/opinion. Even so, I've learned a lot from watching these videos. I myself have a Tamron 28-200mm AF f3.8-5.6. I got it used for next to nothing, and I like at as a "first out of the bag"-lens, while I'm saving up for a nicer sigma or canon. Once I have a good collection of shots(I've gotten back into photography recently and haven't built up my portfolio enough yet), I'd love to have you look at it for a Rapid Fire!

The slipper and ring photo would have looked cool if you could have maybe put the ring on a glass table and the slippers further behind so perspective would have made the ring the same size as the slippers. Then the ring would have been sharp while the slippers out of focus. Might have needed a polarizing filter to eliminate glare off the glass.

The dip kissing couple with no EXIF was good if it was intentional. You don't always need a balanced background as it can be distracting. The question is was it intentional? I'd be very happy if I was the client, and I wouldn't care one bit about the damn door handle either.

What are you talking about at 14:38? That image is full color and doesn't utilize selective color. The wall has a reddish bounce light from her skin (and possibly the floor) and the flowers at the window are yellow, but not as brightly, because they are in the shade. You might want to recalibrate your monitor if you think the background is black and white. That would also explain why you overboomify so many of your photos, because you think they are undersaturated when they aren't. ;)

I know this video is old but I noticed something Jared is saying here and was wondering if anybody can help me obtain a clarification. Jared mentions that the Aperture Priority is metering based on X (the light, the reflection, etc). How does Aperture Priority mode meter differently than any other mode? Seems counterintuitive because I would guess that every mode would simply meter based on whatever your metering mode is.

If you understand how to read a histogram, use exposure compensation, and metering modes, there is no difference in shooting aperture priority and manual in natural light. In Av you are still in control of the ISO and Aperture but you do have to pay attention to what the camera gives you for a shutter speed to make it will work for the type of shot your trying to make.

There's only issues with stabilization on while using a tripod and long exposures - every other shot get some kind of motion blur. With stabilization off it's fine.

Subsequently I went with the D750 - Sharp and Detailed. A search of Google with "D7000 focus" will reveal LOTS of similar problems. Complex solutions and adjustments to auto-focus were proposed which I tried. A camera should focus out of the box in my opinion. That said, others like the D7000 - I had a bad experience with it.

Settings used on the camera can explain a lot about the photo, and the technique used to take that photo can often be improved. If you take a good shot to begin with, a lot of times you won't have to try to salvage it in post processing. A lot of shots are ruined due to people being afraid to bump the ISO, not knowing how to exposure compensate, spot meter or just using full auto. Good knowledge of your equipment and technique when taking a snap is the basics of being a good photographer in my book.

What about this video was not honest? You are making it seem like I was lying about the photos I was talking about. Not sure how I can lie when it's all right there in a video for you the first time I react to the photos.

@PewLaserBeams

In flickr when you click on a photo, bellow the comments you see the EXIF info, if it doesn´t show there, click on the icon that says more info and it will display it.

Ok Dillon Arruda, when you see a fantastic piece of pottery in a gallery, do you wonder what brand furnace the potter used? When you see the the Sistine Chapel, do you wonder what kind of brush Michelangelo used? When you see the cover of Vogue, do you wonder what fixer Klein used? If your first concern when it comes to art is the gear, then you do not know what you are talking about. Personally, I don't care if I have a Nikon D4 and the new 24-70mm 2.8E or a 5 dollar Ansco Shur shot from the 1940s. I am comfortable with having no control over the camera, because the camera does not matter. "The single most important component of a camera is the twelve inches behind it." - Ansel Adams

+photoboy2005 How could you learn the art of photography if you're just relying on what the camera thinks is right for the scene instead of what you want it to be? Your argument is invalid.

I am published but not many. I don't shoot much anymore due to health reasons. I really dislike this guys opinion and his reasons why. Stop with the settings crap. Look at the image, does it tell you something ? If it does then there you go. Then talk about how to get the point across better. The shot thru the glass of the couple really bothers me, if it were exposed 1 more stop, you would see clearly the shop keeper in the background that is now mostly hidden by the slightly lower exposure. How to fix it, shoot at f2.8 with a 100-200mm zoom and the background goes out of focus. They had a 28-70mm so no real way to do that. Being dark or light also sets the mood. Happy is bright, sad is darker. It isn't always about perfect exposure. My opinion of course but in this context his is no better (or worse ) than mine. Whenever I talk about what I like or dislike, I repeat many times, this is based on what I find good and other people may/likely feel differently. I know this is an old video but for new photographers, COMPOSITION First ( that is how you tell the story ) all the other stuff can be not perfect if you capture the emotion in that moment. I would rather see a hurt /distraught soccer player holding their knee on the field with some players being seen, and it be slightly out of focus, than perfect focus and it not show the emotion. A truly great image can be great with grain, noise, bad color, focus problems, etc. if it shows the raw emotion of that moment. If you get the rest correct, that is bonus. Look at some of the old Vietnam pics, most were not in perfect focus, the good ones conveyed the hurt and pain and loss felt. If you are shooting commercial then yes you MUST have straight lines and proper focus, for people/animals, emotion and mood rule. Just my 2 cents of course and you may or may not agree. I shoot Wildlife, action sports, still life, and landscapes. I do not profess to be a pro when it comes to people/kids/weddings. In the end though, does the picture capture the story ( or the story you want to tell ) ? To me, that is priority 1, tell the story first.

Like your stuff, but am endlessly frustrated by your reading comprehension issues (caused by your bad eyes). Clearly the data on each shot says f1.8 on both the 35mm lens and the 50mm lens. And there have been no fewer than three critiques when you read data or phone numbers wrong. You've even dialed the wrong number and then ranted that the site owner wasn't available. Get some stronger glasses please and wear them. Lastly, if you can't read the text, how can you tell something isn't in focus? But yes, I'll keep watching. Thx.
