Ooh, I would love a podcast with UBI as a topic. Not just in the context of the somewhat farther (but perhaps not THAT far) future where it's just a necessity because human jobs are becoming so rare, relative to the human population at least, but also before then. To me, job automation is one (strong) argument in favor of UBIs, but certainly not the only one. As a Dutch person, I've been following Rutger Bregman quite closely, who recently went a bit viral when he talked about taxes and tax avoidance at Davos, but who also is just a strong supporter of UBI. Based on him as a source, I'm quite sure there is no country on earth that has really, truly implemented a UBI. There have been various experiments in the past (most notably one in Canada), and more recently some countries are starting to run some relatively small-scale tests with it, but it hasn't REALLY been tried so far, on a larger scale. (And some advantages of it might only come in exactly when it does become larger in scope!) Anyway, I'm sure you'll research all that thoroughly before the next podcast. There is of course no chance of anything spurious coming from these lads here, so I'm not worried :)

Yeah our tipping system doesnt make much sense, Im absolutely against it, but of course I dont want to screw over a server so I do tip. Its fairly understood that %15 is standard, and %20 for great service. But smith does make a great point, why the hell do I have to pay for your food and then pay your wait staff for you, most of us are used to it though, i just cant stand the group of people who get pissy if you dont tip a minimum of %20 or think tipping less for bad service makes you the bad guy some how.

UBI won't just be necessary if the entire economy is run by automation, it'll be necessary even if something like 30% of the jobs were taken by automation. And not just as a replacement for welfare either, as that is completely useless to people that are working and on welfare to begin with (as they lose their job and are then on only welfare, which isn't enough to live). There will reach a point where the insanely wealthy will just need to be happy with what they have amassed without any more growth whatsoever, just recycling their money into the government, which is then given to consumers, which then buy products, over and over and over. Otherwise,people lose jobs, not enough consumers to keep the business afloat, business fails.

@noah.2B5 жыл бұрын
I am extremely skeptical about UBI for a few reasons. For one, where would the money come from? I don't support massive tax hikes, and honestly I don't want the government to be that involved in my life. Second, I believe people need a job. They need to be connected and responsible for their own survival and upkeep to feel motivated and to have meaning in their life. People hate talking about this part of it, but from my experience that's a huge reason behind the opiod epidemic here in the US is just people on welfare who don't need to work get horrifically depressed and fall into a terrible lifestyle that's incredibly difficult to escape from. idk I honestly just don't see how it could work. There's a great saying from I think it was Reagan, "If you want to discourage something, tax it. If you want to encourage it, subsidize it." and while obviously that doesn't just apply directly everywhere, I think the sentiment behind it is correct. I personally don't believe in or want the government to be that large or involved in personal issues. Yes I think there should be some form of social safety net, but I feel like when the government manages it, it is poorly executed, poorly managed and easily exploitable.
