Owned and operated by The Western Rhode Island Civic Historical Society. A former Colonial home and Inn, restored and furnished in the period-style.
Many claim this to be the most haunted location in Rhode Island!
The Paine house originally was built in 1691 by Samuel Bennett. Samuel ran a saw mill at this site and it is believed that the house began as a one room shelter. The mode for travel at that time was the Pawtuxet River. The property was passed to his son Samuel and in 1741 the first town meeting and election took place here. In 1742 the property was sold to Francis Brayton who added to the house and was granted a license to sell spiritous liquors and the house became a house of entertainment, an inn or a tavern. After his death in 1783 the property passed to his son Francis Brayton Jr. In 1797 it was sold to a Charles Holden and was known as the Holden tavern. Holden heirs sold it to Thomas Whipple April 9, 1849.
On April 25, 1866 the Whipple family sold the property to Phebe Paine and Mary Mathewson (Matteson). Mary sold her half to Phebe Paine Johnson. Through inheritance the property came to be in the Paine family for the next 87 years. Mr. Herbert F. Paine was the last of the family to live in the house and in 1946 after his death it passed to his half-sister Mrs. Zilpha W. Foster. The keys to the house were turned over to the President of the Western Rhode Island Civic Historical Society on July 24, 1953 after being left by Mrs. Foster as a memorial to her mother Phebe Paine Johnson and sister Orvilla Paine. The house was added to the National Historic Register in 1974.

What a wonderful piece of architecture! A lot of original detail left intact. But for the life of me I'll never understand why these places think mannequins popping up in corners is a good idea

That was so cool! I've loved watching your ghost hunts and stuff since TAPS first started on TV, and I can't wait to see what happens in this investigation. The 360° tour was amazing, too. My joints hate me too much to be letting me up and down all those stairs 😂. I also second what at least 1 other commenter said about how a hard hat might be a good idea for houses like this one.

Jay, I lived in Rhode Island from 1978 till 1992, so much Amazing History, Architecture, and Ghost Stories there. The first place we rented in Cranston I believe was haunted. At age 15 I started snooping around looking for Ghosts ! Guess you could say I was Ghost Hunting when Ghost Hunting wasn't Cool..... I sure got picked on for doing it, L-O-L ! Rhode Island is a Great place for Ghost Hunting. Love seeing these Old Historical sites as well. 😊

Originally from the Plymouth area, I have such a love for old homes and buildings. My tax guy, insurance agent, everyone seemed to have an office in a building from the 1700s. Love the smell and cramped but cozy space of older buildings. Ty for sharing this!

So seeing all of what you do through your eyes and video's makes it awesome as if I am right there with you all during your tours and investigations. Thank you for what you all do.

These 360 tours are perfect companion videos to the investigations. I doubt the dead laid in state or however it is called for civilians in that tiny room. I have only read of this ritual done with the person dressed and in a coffin. Hard to maneuver a coffin into that room. More likely died in there as you said and then the wake and viewing was in that front room, which was probably the parlor at some point. I have always wondered how quickly those wakes had to be held. Down here in Texas in the heat, o my. That body will not hold up very long.
