The... thing in the basement was one of the Hill's progeny. He was a bottlegger who was burned inside one of his own moonshine barrel by his competitor. The ghost will not be visited or discussed anymore in the series, tho. He's scary but not a prominent ghost in the series. The explanations about the ghosts are in the series's website and creators' interviews if you guys want to check them later

The man with the box was bringing it for his mother that Shirley was working on. She had a reaction to it because it looked like the box she buried the kitten in which was the transition to her flashback.

You mentioned the cats from the last episode on your comments: I believe the cats are a metaphoric image of what is happening to the 5 kids, like, there are 5 cats too, and they are "dying" because they have no mom... Olivia, the mother, tells Shirley "the cats needed their mom", so, without mother (cos Olivia died) you see they all 5 on future, Shirley fights with Steven cos the book, everybody ignores Nell, Luke is addict, and so on, they are all broken, fractured...

Steve and Shirley don't appear to have any empathic abilities, which might explain why they're both in denial about everything and a complete contrast to the others. I theorize that Theo, Luke and Nell all inherited traits from their mother's side of the family which allows them to sense things, but Steve and Shirley seem to take more after their dad and don't have the same abilities. They're the skeptics who close themselves off from it. With Nell and Luke it's passed off as the "Twin Thing" but with Theo it's a very obvious ability. I think the mother has the same kind of thing, she absorbs the emotions of those around her and when it's too much she has an episode.

Shirley definitely does. Liv explains that the abilities run in the women in their family, which is why Steve doesn't have any abilities. Luke has some sensitivities because of the twin thing with Nellie.

I’m not sure if this is the right term but I think Theo is what people would call “clairvoyant.” Also, I don’t blame Luke for going on drugs with all the messed up things he’s seen. I feel so bad for all of the kids they’re clearly damaged and traumatised by what they individually saw.

The show keeps ramping things up episode by episode so get ready. Theo is a character from the original book where she is a psychic and it is inferred that she is gay. The cold spot and "whos hand was I holding" are incidents from the book. Stay safe and Carry On!!

I think Theo is a “touch know”. It was actually too funny when I first watched this, I knew what was going on with her because of Stephen King’s Rose Red. Also the Dudley’s referencing “in the night, in the dark” is from the book as well. Lots of great nuggets 😊

Also, as a second comment: theres a production error in this episode, in the scene Steven is talking to all sisters (Luke is not there, so, only sisters) and Kevin too (Shirley husband) on what seems to be Shirley house... or maybe Steven, anyway, about the book. There are lots of pictures on the room, family pictures most, but there is a second or two when they focus on Theo and you can see the picture of Shirley's son and daugther already grown up at age they will have when Nell dies, but... Shirley still pregnant on this scene, so they should not have the picture of her kids already, right? I think its a small production mistake, not anything related to story
