Nothing is truly Scar-safe or Grian-proof. Scar will _somehow_ find a way to die to it (GoodTimeWithScar was returned to sender), and all Grian has to do is drop a potato and it'll crash the entire network.

The post office here shut down Feb 14th last year due to weather. First time I ever saw it and I still had to work that day.

Some things to consider: 1. Make every chunkloading portal have a ladder or escape bubblevator in case a hermit gets trapped: you don't want them to break the system while trying to get out. 2. Include a small beacon with a hopper clock. You can use a beam that blinks into existence and keeps changing as a 'you have mail' notification so that hermits will not have to consciously check the chest the mail arrives at. Checking mail seems to have been a huge problem in regards to mailboxes in earlier seasons with some mailboxes going utterly unchecked for (almost) an entire season. 3. Signs. Stamp here. Box here. Press button. Etc. Basically Scar-proof it. 4. Make the button Grian-proof. You know Grian is going to press those buttons whenever he walks by, so you'll have to be able to deal with bad input. 5. Have a special Postmaster station for Pearl where packages without addressing or incorrect addressing arrive. She can then either keep possession, deliver it properly, or go back to the sender to chew them out in her glorious style. 6. Have you slabbed & redstone the area around the track sufficiently to keep zombie pigmen & hoglins from clipping the cart as it travels on the tracks? I know they can't spawn on the tracks, but minecarts can be a huge pain when it comes to entities...

It's nontrivial to detect incorrectly addressed packages with their system. The most they could really do is to inject the sender's stamp so that it can return to sender, but it would require them to modify the redstone to filter out the extra stamp

@@alexschott9567they could probably build an arbitrary filter line at some point (post office?) that checks stamps against the known recipient list and reserves and sends any that do not match to the post office. At the risk of doubling delivery times (whomp whomp) you could build a duplicate loop above the nether loop that uses the existing chunk loaders and that all carts passing a point swap to for checking. Only mail passing that point, albeit all mail passing that point would go on an extended journey but at least your wouldn’t have bad mail cycling endlessly in the nether. The system could be refined by making the check loop a manual override, such that it is only engaged a few times a week by a post master flipping a lever and waiting a few minutes.

Another comment mentioned automatically adding a sender stamp to every delivery (literally just run the minecart under a hopper for every mailbox; long as the intake rails nether-side are all either before the outputs for every mailbox, or less than 15secs afterwards, they'd have to go round the entire system in order to return to sender, in which case useful cause wasn't delivered anyway). You could send a 'Spruce Logs 3 diamonds' stamp, with accompanying diamonds in the shulker, & it automatically tags the sender, reaches the warehouse/wood farm, takes diamonds as you say, if correct payment then adds wood shulker & sends back. All within ~1min30, & you can send as many orders in a row as you want. Ahhh this whole thing is just suuch a cool concept 😁

How long do you think they'll take to realise this and implement a Sahara 2.0? The permit system makes it not possible for a sell everything shop, but it could be like Ebay. Going to the shopping district could still be quicker if order processing and delivery isn't fully automated. That sounds like a big project.

I love the idea of the "stamps" being sold at the post office: they cound be signed books, so they can't be counterfeited, the way you did for Decked Out. That would fill the post office building with much for life than being an unnecessary (albeit pretty) structure, and give lots of interaction potential: people might even start stamp-collecting!

Personally I don't like the special retexturing much. It feels too unvanilla for me. I'd like to see something more like banners with a design for each Hermit :) EDIT: Also, banners can be copied without TYPING anything, from your inventory. That should cut down on bad addressing!!

Here's my idea on how to kill 2 birds with one stone: Let's say Scar sends a package to "Grain" (misspelled). The package gets shot down to the underground hole and just before it goes into the nether it gets a Scar stamp hoppered into it. Then it goes on it's way looking for a "Grain" destination, but since there's no such thing, it makes an entire loop and picks up the Scar stamp and goes right back to him!

Tango! A few commets below talk about hermits misspelling stamps and things- just an idea on this is to have a set official stamps that you can pick up from the post office that is essentially reskined paper with the correct label! Hermits can pick up a pack as frequently as needed from the post office after postal workers collect them from the nether filters. Love this project so so so much!

They could even get the income that Etho wanted by _selling_ official stamps, and maybe charging more for "rare" ones with slightly different art. You know some of the Hermits will end up wanting to become stamp collectors. Perhaps a "blind box" of stamps, costing less than buying the same number of individual ones and including a small chance to get a rare version, might be profitable?

USE BANNERS! Sell an official stamp book, and the Hermits can just copy the stamps (EXACTLY) from their own inventory, without having to type, AND they will look unique! You could also put a given person's banner by their mailbox for prettiness. (See my other comments for notes).

Unironically, the nether portion of the mail system really does look very much like the conveyor system inside a UPS hub. It even functions basically the same way. Source: I worked inside one of the largest UPS hubs on the planet several years ago, so I got to know the system pretty well. So yeah, kudos to you and Etho for coming up with a system that we basically use irl! It makes a ton of sense!

Edit: I realized this is probably a bad example since routers don't really have things intentionally go around a big loop as they direct things. The structure is closer to a big tree trunk that branches out. A mail sorter just has a looping belt that drops things directly into bins along the belt. ---- old comment: It's a pretty logical system, internet routers also do this with them having a table on where to direct every packet next as well. Essentially they check the IP address and direct things based on what address range it falls into. (There is a lot more keeping the table updated and such, but this is how the basic system works.)

That's funny, I spent time with a contractor who installed a number of modifications on postal parcel sorting systems. He's not wrong, it's pretty close to how they actually function. Those Lockheed sorters sure are a wonder to see in action

TANGO: You should make a secondary "reloading/maintenance track" that's only accessible to mail maintenance staff. The idea is you fill a chest minecart to the max with flint & steal and it deliver them to the portals. Right now. The biggest bottleneck to your system that WILL become a problem is if the portals run out of F&S. The cool thing about a maintenance track is you will know how bad you were based on how many F&S are left in the chest-cart when it returns. If it somehow returns empty, it means you need to send a second load. You would NEVER have to manually check every individual portal anymore. Infact, you can even automate this in the overworld with a new auto-crafter. You fill one double chest with flint, and 1 double chest with iron. It would rest on a detector rail that stops the cart from moving till it's full. On detection of full cart, it sends it off and it returns. Doing it this way will make it VERY VERY VERY rare for you to EVER need to refill supplies since a single stack of iron/flint gets you 64 items each with 64 uses. Meaning 1 stack of each ALONE would get you 4,096 portal lights. But since each portal is used twice, it's more like 2,048 divided by however many portals you got. But that's still just ONE slot on an empty chest. Edit: It might need to be a hopper minecart, not just a minecart with chest. You know, since it has multiple drop-off points. You could also use a day-night detector in the overworld to limit the number of times it does a refill run to save up on materials (since every time it goes through the nether, it would be eating up durability of all the portal lighters). This would however probably mean you might need to manually load the chunks then tho.

@@Hadeks_Marow In some fairness, a dispenser with 9 full flint and steels are going to be able to light a portal 576 times (Flint and Steel has 64 durability, and 64 x 9 = 576). Which means 576 full loops of the track before one of the sections breaks. Though the minecrats shouldn't be making a full loop every time mail is sent, it does at least mean each section of track can handle 576 sent packages. That is A LOT of packages, even for all the hermits. But, it can be assumed that every 576 packages, the chunk loaders will need to be refilled. While this could be done somewhat automatically (could even try to use a copper bulb binary counter to keep track of total packages delivered), I don't think it'll be too much of an issue. At least for now. BUT, this episode seems more like figuring out "can we even do this in the first place" rather than the final set up. Don't want to establish something important to the main line until it's mostly finished so it's not a pain to divert it in the future (I've learned this the hard way through games like Factorio. It's way more work to redo something, than to manually check every now and then until you can fully commit to building it).

The hermits' shops can now have catalogs to enable mail order products too! Send shop-specific stamp with a package containing an order request + adequate diamonds and the shop ships off the goods! The higher tech shops can automate this, while those that aren't can just have order backlogs. This is awesome. Shops can pay a postal subscription fee to get access to the mailing routes and the "addresses" of the hermits and the post office sells all the stamps too! Throw in some custom / seasonal skins for stamps and make them collectable. Genius.

On that map he showed the route was strategically placed to intersect as many of their areas as possible but it did leave me wondering about Bdubs, Zed, and Joe in particular. They're each way off in the outskirts compared to everyone else on that map. Zed's marker is off to the west of the bend in the line. Bdubs's marker is off to the northeast of the northern limit of the line. And Joe's marker is off to the southwest of the bend in the line. (Although Joe's got some sort of massive project planned so maybe something on the border of his terrain would probably end up pretty close to Etho or Cub anyway. I forget if Bdubs has said much about his plans yet so I can't guess how far away from home his mail box might be. But... with the "turn everything into a minigame" direction Zed is going with his base this season it would actually be perfectly in character for him to do something crazy like set up a rollercoaster minecart ride starting from his crack heading towards a mailbox in the middle of nowhere with targets to shoot along the way and holding the contents of his mail packages hostage to either destroy or hand out as prizes depending on how many targets were hit on the way there.)

I would suggest making a book that's a dictionary of all the Hermits' names that the stamp uses, just in case there's any misunderstanding. All the copies of the book could be put on lecterns in front of the mailbox. Maybe an anvil with a chest full of paper at the mailboxes would be useful too.

Making and selling official stamps would probably be easier, and have the added bonus of providing an income to the P.E.T. Postal Service as well. A post employee could periodically go to the Nether and clear out the stamps from the boxes to sell again so they wouldn't have to keep making more.

Since they only go clockwise, the odds would be very low, though there will definitely be a few times throughout the season, because the hermits always find a way to make a mess in the most statistically impossible way
