I don't think they should limit themselves to just Hermits. They had Martyn on, so I wouldn't be surprised if they go down Empires or branch out to other SMPs and other KZbinrs who also play Minecraft. I'd even love to see Captain Sparklez be on the podcast at some point, I know it's not going to happen sooner rather than later, but why only stop at just Hermitcraft people, right?

It's been awesome to hear from so many creators (especially the Hermits) that might not have done an interview / been on a podcast otherwise. And at this point, I'm always ready to learn more about whoever they bring on since it's always guaranteed to be time well spent :) Especially when seeing in the title of the video that it's just the first out of two episodes with the guest, that always makes me excited for the subsequent episode, even before I listened to the first one (which happens to be the case right now, but after watching the introduction, I know that this episode will be just as good as the rest have been... and also because it's Gem, and as the quote from one of the Hermitcraft episodes goes, "Gem is great!")

Especially my dad, who's even older (in his mid-80s), and it is soooo difficult to keep him remembering what not to do so I'm not being called to fix their computer once a month to fix whatever he's broken on the computer by clicking on ads.

I definitely felt the having to teach people internet safety as well from almost the opposite perspective, I'm pretty young so I started out being on the internet at a very young age. Internet safety has been a thing ingrained in me both at home and at school since legitimately about kindergarten/first grade. When people are lax about internet safety it's infuriating, because these are the ultimate basics! It's like stranger danger to me, something you just know and will always fall back on even if it's 3 am and you have completely lost any semblance of a filter. And then someone in my life will post a picture of their house and I'm like "STOP- PLEASE YOU ARE GOING TO DIE." Which may be a slight overreaction but I would rather be freaked out and overreacting than stalked

I love how Impulse really is different in this one! Typically, with guests, especially Hermits, Skizz leads the charge because Impy works with these people and knows them well, but Skizz doesn't. But this time was definitely different. Impulse talks differently with Gem then he does a lot of other people. There's a bubbly warmth mixed with excitement and I wouldn't be surprised if Gem reminded him a bit of his own daughter. She's clearly a mc daughter to him, at least. But it wasn't just Impy, oooh no. I heard that tone of voice and saw the hand flex when Gem mentioned that some of her DMs... Likely were on the creeper side, and not the mc creeper... Skizz was instantly dad mode. I heard in the hum, I saw it in the sudden hand flex, it was beautiful! Being a woman in the youtube space has got to be scary. We humans are maturing, but as all three of them pointed out, it's slow. We women still face a lot of challenges but it's always heartening to know you have good men/boys/guys/ ,what have, you in your corner. Because, and I love how Impy said it, at the end of the day, what's truly important is being a good human. We're humans. Maybe we're female or male humans or no gender or both genders, or we have a specific type of partner, or a lack of desire for one, maybe our skin colors vary greatly from each other, but you know what? We're all humans. We're all physically the same race at the end of the day. Yes, culture, personal upbringing, self identity, and individual personality are all important, but, being a good human to other humans is really it. Unfortunately, a lot of humans aren't good to other humans and I'm glad internet safety was really mentioned. I'm gonna date myself here but I remember when the internet was young and I was always taught, never give your real name, be cautious, use the same instincts online as you would with any physical conversation. People too often think they're safe, their immuned, that nothing can get them on the other side of the screen, but as Skizz mentioned, it's extremely easy to get someone's whole life story with just a few breadcrumbs of information... The internet is a wild and untameable place and all we can do is try and carve out a safe place for ourselves, our kith and kin, and for content creator's, their fans as well. Imo a really good content creator is someone who recognizes their fans are giving srconds, minutes, hours, etc of their lives to them and while that might seem intimidating, might make them feel a need to put out the best content ever or they've failed us, in reality, I think me, and probably a fair few others, simply enjoy that not only are we getting content we like, but we feel safe, like your not gonna attack us or a lot of the bull some youtubers do or We're not gonna be attacking each other, and also we know that you know we love you. A good fan community is as important as a good content creator, imo, and it makes me happy to see not only a good community but also the acknowledgment that it is and knowing it makes the content creators life a little better because they have a good community, feels good. (That was a whole rambling rant but I hope it got the point across.) (Tl;dr, you guys have good communities and you clearly value and acknowledge you do and it makes me happy and glad I'm apart of it!) But alllll this aside, I'm excited for the next podcast!

Just a month after coming into my stream, he finally had his heart transplant, but never woke up. This kind of hit me hard. At the time, I thought it was so stupid, but as I grew up, I noticed people relying on filler words to hold conversation and I realized how important that lesson was. I thought it was cruel at the time but I couldn't be more grateful for it.

A great episode as always! One note to Impulse, about not seeing people as labels but just as people: something I had to learn is that for a lot of people who are minorities in some particular way, they might consider that label to be an important part of their identity. And there are a lot of people out there who *do* see the label and treat that person in a negative way. So we do need to remember and acknowledge that the label is there.

As a member of two notable minority communities, labels are important both for finding people with similar life experiences, and as a useful tool to advocate for our rights. I love Impuse, but I think he doesn’t realise that ‘I don’t see labels’ is actually a privilege that comes from being (or at least being largely perceived as) part of the majority in a person’s community. People within minority communities often need to be more aware of who is around us, and how they’re going to react to who we are for our own safety.

I love you guys, and your podcast, and how open you are talking about things, so I hope you'll take this comment in the spirit of wanting to share an experience that I've had to learn over a long (and difficult) time myself. And really is still a work in progress for me tbh. On the topic of not seeing labels. Not everyone wants or needs labels. I myself am someone who holds the labels I've chosen pretty loosely. But I have CHOSEN them because they're useful to me in certain situations. Hearing someone say they don't see labels or think of labels in relation to me doesn't feel awesome. Even for me, who is pretty easy going with them. There are folks who really have fought long and hard to find them. I get what you're saying, but I want to ask you to consider that I (and people who find labels meaningful to them) don't need protection from labels (whether they're self-chosen or someone else is trying to assign one that's untrue.) What I actually need is protection from the reactions of people to what they perceive my labels to be. Because they do see and apply labels to me (and others) beyond even the ones I pick for myself. And those reactions can be actively dangerous (mentally, emotionally, physically). Reminding them I'm human in spite of my labels is minor stakes. Remind them that people who fit that label are not wrong or bad. There's nothing wrong with being "label". It's similar to why people of color don't feel comforted by hearing "I don't see color". These things impact how people experience the world and ignoring that part of the experience can be disheartening for people living it.

Yeah I had the same thought when hearing that part of the conversation. Like yeah…in an ideal world, your labels wouldn’t hinder you in life…but that doesn’t mean they will ever be totally invisible and honestly I’m not sure they should be.

I think the attitude of "We're all human" and "I just see the person" is unhelpful to the people who suffer because others don't see the world the same way. Until we have a truly equitable society, color-blindness or any other sort of blindness to racialized or marginalized people is less helpful than the people who do it, with good intentions ofc, think it is.

I accidentally found Gem back in like 2016/17 when i was looking for build inspiration. I subbed and all of a sudden years later I was so confused when she ended up on Hermitcraft as I hadn't really followed how big she was getting. Really happy to see her thrive in the HC Community.

It would be so cool if you had someone like Smajor, Jimmy, Joel, Lizzie, Cleo, Etho, or Pearl on the podcast. They're all such unique creators and I think their perspectives would be so awesome to explore with the contrast of you too! Anyways, I love the podcast so much I always listen to it when I eat lunch and it brightens my day everytime i hear your guys voices blasting through my headphones ❤😂

Really appreciate commenting on the very large majority of people in the minecraft space being men (specifically white straight men) and people need to support each other to make the space a safe one for minorities, since as it is it’s a very dangerous ground to grow hate if not kept in check

First: THANK YOU GEM for pointing out that we need people like Imp and Skizz to help us out on some of the nonsense! Second, and unrelated: way back in the day, i did tech support for dial up internet for Newfoundland. Despite not really having the stereotypical accent, Gem always reminds me of that because virtually everyone i talked to from Newfoundland was so nice. It was honestly a badge of honour for me when we'd be making small talk while waiting for something and they'd ask where on the Rock i was from. I subconsciously mimic accents, so that was definitely part of it, but personalty wise they always assumed i was one of them and it was delightful because practically the whole darn province seems to be almost as nice as Gem.

really enjoyed this one. I've been watching gem since around 2017, 2018, and have loved seeing her grow through the years. her talking about being in artist in minecraft really reminded me of things bdubs talks about in his videos and applies to his builds, along with things joe hills talks about - not just his builds being the art, but his videos themselves are his art, and the way he always refers to hermitcraft as an artist collective, for example. love the podcast

11:23 I felt this line hit my soul. My mother works a hospital job and has crazy schedules. She does this thing of: Get at least Christmas or Thanksgiving off and spend time with kids, then work at job. And it’s random too, it could be a 6pm-2am shift. When I heard that, I felt that, because I don’t wanna be in that cycle as well and do content creation like Gem and the others out there. Conclusion: Gem is such an inspiration and that line she put there got me. Amazing episode

48:30 That is good to hear. A few months back we were having a discussion in the comments about a big youtuber before they became a big youtuber. And I was putting something down like "I wonder if this and this applies to this youtuber?" and then I stopped for a moment and I was like, I know this youtuber values their privacy, am I putting them at risk of other people now answering this without their permission? And I was like probably not, but better be safe than sorry, so I put in a disclaimer to not share personal stuff about this youtuber without their explicit permission to do so. And a day later I was like, this was probably over the top, I was probably too paranoid. Now hearing this story, and hearing that is actually a risk and a thing that happens, I am gonna be even more careful with commenting on topics that should not be answered for privacy and safety. So thanks for pointing it out Gem.

I've been a long looong time subscriber of Gem. I wish I interacted with her content more, i was always a lurker, but its insane to see how much she grew and learned from what she was doing. Gosh.. i remember been a pre-teen and i didnt like her becuase I thought her voice-overs were too breathy. I remember her family dog Wilson, who i think insipred her to get Winnie. I remember when there was a rumour that she was 6'3, I remember when she said she wanted a dog but had to get a house with a yard first. Its been such a long time but so fun to watch her grow. Gem, if you ever see this, i adore you. I wish you nothing but happiness and success

Great podcast with Gem, guys! Looking forward to part 2 in a few hours here. I do have a little feedback that I meant to leave a few days ago. But I read through the most recent comments and saw quite a few already comment on what I wanted to say which is great. But I gotta have my own 2 cents in here! :) 34:18 "I think it's important for you as a creator in the public eye to help others... is there any advice to people... where you feel like you're a bit of a minority as far as being a female"? I'm glad you asked this question, Impulse! And I'm not surprised that you did because most women are asked this. Basically, how can women help other women. But the way Gem turned it around on you is what I want to address because even if she hadn't, I would have brought it up in the comments. I feel like you didn't talk about it very much but neither did Gem as she was likely not ready to have that level of in-depth discussion on it on a light-hearted podcast. I would love for the podcast to interview another minority who (with preparation) would be comfortable with expressing these opinions. I think it's almost a responsibility to your audience to interview at the very least Zombiecleo and hear their educated opinions and personal experiences with navigating the internet as a minority in multiple ways especially for as long as they have. I don't know how much Cleo, False, and Stress spoke about the disparity amongst just the 3 of them on the imbalance of gender equality on the Hermitcraft server pre season 8 but I'm willing to bet they've shared over the years the challenges of doing so as a minority especially pre & circa GamerGate. And I'm also willing to bet Hermits in general never spoke about such things at your weekly meetings. I am reminded of the one time Xisuma kind of put his foot in his mouth replying to Cleo's tweet about toxic gendered comments and they responded something akin to "you don't see it X, and that's the problem". Xisuma deleted his reply; not sure if Cleo did as well. That was back in 2020. In 2016 at Minecon is an example of Tango and then Xisuma letting down a young girl who asked about "why so few women on Hermitcraft" to the Hermitcraft Panel of which yourself, Tango, Iskall, Mumbo, Cub, & Scar were a part of. As I understood it from Iskall's comment on the reddit, the 6 of you at the panel could barely hear the questions being asked which is why Xisuma interrupted Tango and took over answering it. Criticism with response from Iskall -> old.reddit.com/r/Minecraft/comments/54epc6/minecon_2016_saturday_review/ I would LOVE to hear how you & the crew would answer that now because despite the incredible addition of Gem & Pearl to Hermitcraft in season 8 who do their best to take up a lot of space (god bless Gen Z & A), Hermitcraft still has a significant imbalance which is a problem when Gem and Pearl (along with False, Cleo, & Pearl) still have to go through this and aren't able to speak plainly about it to their fellow hermits. Going back to my original thought up there about Impulse asking Gem the question about what advice she would give to people... she is right. It should be up to the men on Hermitcraft to not just be an example of how to treat women and non-binary people in gaming but also to give advice on how to do so. The minority rarely gets taken seriously or listened to whereas a straight white cis man will say the same thing and people will actually hear it and consider it. Essentially what I'm saying is, please use your societal given privilege to help out so the onus is not on the victims to fix the problem.

A lot of jobs have hidden time people aren't aware of. Teachers famously plan and grade outside contract hours. People think my job as a massage therapist is just the 1-2 hours at the table, but it's also setup, cleanup, notes, researching client problems if we've hit a wall, accounting, scheduling, etc. I would guess most adults would figure that a content creator would have more than just recording time as work, but maybe not.

35:41 This is exactly why I started watching you. "Advocating for humans being good humans." Started at the Wonka build because of a red stone video, and got sucked into Hermitcraft from there. Great comradery, ethical shenanigans, amazing art. When I was younger, in the eighties, I always said it would be so cool if we could just pick our own tv channels. Here we are, in the future, making and picking our own tv channels.
