To the people not liking the music: Think about what the song is about and then put it in context with the Hero's Journey. It's a song about the first stage, the longing for more. If you don't like it for personal reasons, that's completely fine, but there's a good reason for using it

I was expecting this video to be spectacular - especially on an emotional level - because it's a supercut of amazing movies featuring the Hero's Journey. Then 20 seconds in I started to look for the source of the bland electronic elevator music beat. I thought that I had left open some YT video in another tab, but no. That's actually the music for this video and the final result is surprisingly underwhelming. Great idea, weak execution overall (not just the music). And I'm sayin this as a lifelong electronic music lover. There are many awesome YT videos, but this ain't one of them.

Have you guys taken into account that the song was an Over The Rainbow remix?? nysi bookmarked The Wizard of Oz in this supercut, and even made the soundtrack to reflect this, I think this was a cool choice. Not the best song just to listen to in bed, but I think it worked well within the context of what this video was trying to do

I didn't like the audio *because* it was an Over the Rainbow remix. Some songs are perfect and iconic in their original form and are only ruined by some wanker who has to bite off it because he or she can't think of anything original. Case in point - this remix.

Fellow video essayist here. This was an awesome supercut and something more people should appreciate. Video essays take hours, days and weeks to craft. The research, the content, the editing - it's all something that, if done incorrectly, can lead to extremely poor content. When you receive a video like this, you should genuinely appreciate it because 1) the creator isn't feeding you garbage video essays with poorly strung together content and 2) you're seeing the creator express their adoration for cinema through different means. It's a shame that one video sees so many people turn on one of the best essayists on this platform; a video that is both excellent in its editing as it is a pure visual love letter to the hero's journey through cinematic means.

Artur Araújo I mean music is pretty subjective I thought it was okay, music on KZbin is quite hard to nail. I don't think it was vague, it was just a supercut of moments of the hero's journey, I thought it was well done idk

It's a recurring theme I noticed on youtube; some person comments/dislikes about something purely their opinion or something subjective. Then another person does it, and so on. And they do so without putting any reason behind it. It utilizes the bandwagon effect. Honestly there are so many videos out there with this phenomenon occurring to them.
@owenduijvendak8717
@owenduijvendak8717 7 жыл бұрын
I liked the concept of the vid but the execution is lacking. Some scenes seemed ill placed, almost as if we got an out of order hero's journey. I think this project would have benefited from a hard cap of 1-2 films per step. Preferably with longer more drawn out scenes that clearly symbolise the essence of the step. I can see the appeal though in wanting to showcase how many films employ the hero's journey. I dunno I might have a try myself.
@joelike7787
@joelike7787 7 жыл бұрын
Sup NASA I mean that completely goes against the point of a supercut though? This was like an oldschool NYSI supercut video, and quite an original take on it tbh because it recreated a hero's journey thus telling a story through the medium of a supercut, which is cool. I think he assumed people knew the essence of the "hero's journey" as a storytelling construct, the point wasn't to analyse this aspect of film, but rather show, through supercut, its vast usage. At least you didn't say the music just sucked though :)
@TaranVH
@TaranVH 7 жыл бұрын
Honestly, this is not very good. But I know how it could be improved. So many of these shots are just shots of someone's face, completely devoid of any context or meaning. Many of the shots we get are just REACTIONS to story beats that have happened, rather than the events themselves. For this supercut to make any sense at all, it requires the viewer to have already seen most or all of the films that are presented. ... Here's how I would have approached this concept: For all of the 54 movies that you've chosen, identify the key scenes, and the key moment in those scenes, that best reveals a story beat. Though, 54 is far too many. I'd say you should choose about 10 films, which best represent the Hero's Journey / monomyth. (For those of you who don't know, the story beats for a Hero's Journey are: Act 1 1. Ordinary World 2. Call to Adventure 3. Refusal of the Call 4. Meeting the Mentor 5. Crossing the Threshold Act 2 6. Tests, Allies, Enemies 7. Approaching the Inmost Cave 8. The Crisis / Supreme Ordeal 9. Seizing the Reward Act 3 10. The Road Back 11. The Climax / Resurrection 12. Return with the Elixir ) So, to take Star Wars as an example, the "Call to Adventure" beat is when Luke first sees the recording of Leia, saying "Help me Obi-Wan Kenobi, you're my only hope." And here's the "Refusal of the Call" beat: Obi-Wan: "You must learn the ways of the Force, if you are to come with me to Alderaan." Luke: "Alderaan? I'm not going to Alderaan. I've gotta get home; it's late." But this dialogue is actually sufficient to cover two beats at once - the call AND the refusal. So it's a good candidate for inclusion in the final edit. Once you've identified the best scenes for all the story beats in your 10 movies, it's simply a matter of selecting the best ones. I'd say that each story beat should be represented by 3 movies each, like so: 1. Ordinary World - The Truman Show 1. Ordinary World - Cast Away 1. Ordinary World - Lord of the Rings 2. Call to Adventure - Toy Story 2. Call to Adventure - Indiana Jones 2. Call to Adventure & Refusal of the Call - Star Wars And so on! BAM, you've got a fantastic supercut about the Hero's Journey. For bonus points, you can choose movies with matching dialogue that you can effectively juxtaposition. For example: Batman Begins: "Some men just want to watch the world burn." CUT TO Apocolypse Now: "I love the smell of napalm in the morning."

Grétar Jónsson The Hero's Journey is a very important literary theme found in most "great" films. Look back even to Homer's "The Odyssey" and you can find the same archetypes. The quotes at the beginning and are from the man who identified and named these archetypes. Think before you type.

I'm not sure I can articulate fully why I love this so much, but I'll try: I'm finally starting to accept that my life isn't going to take the shape I expected; that I can't see what's coming up, and that I never will be able to. and although I sometimes feel defeated by that, on a good day, it feels full of possibility. this video made me feel like that.

THE ORDINARY WORLD. The hero, uneasy, uncomfortable or unaware, is introduced sympathetically so the audience can identify with the situation or dilemma. The hero is shown against a background of environment, heredity, and personal history. Some kind of polarity in the hero’s life is pulling in different directions and causing stress. 2. THE CALL TO ADVENTURE. Something shakes up the situation, either from external pressures or from something rising up from deep within, so the hero must face the beginnings of change. 3. REFUSAL OF THE CALL. The hero feels the fear of the unknown and tries to turn away from the adventure, however briefly. Alternately, another character may express the uncertainty and danger ahead. 4. MEETING WITH THE MENTOR. The hero comes across a seasoned traveler of the worlds who gives him or her training, equipment, or advice that will help on the journey. Or the hero reaches within to a source of courage and wisdom. 5. CROSSING THE THRESHOLD. At the end of Act One, the hero commits to leaving the Ordinary World and entering a new region or condition with unfamiliar rules and values. 6. TESTS, ALLIES AND ENEMIES. The hero is tested and sorts out allegiances in the Special World. 7. APPROACH. The hero and newfound allies prepare for the major challenge in the Special world. 8. THE ORDEAL. Near the middle of the story, the hero enters a central space in the Special World and confronts death or faces his or her greatest fear. Out of the moment of death comes a new life. 9. THE REWARD. The hero takes possession of the treasure won by facing death. There may be celebration, but there is also danger of losing the treasure again. 10. THE ROAD BACK. About three-fourths of the way through the story, the hero is driven to complete the adventure, leaving the Special World to be sure the treasure is brought home. Often a chase scene signals the urgency and danger of the mission. 11. THE RESURRECTION. At the climax, the hero is severely tested once more on the threshold of home. He or she is purified by a last sacrifice, another moment of death and rebirth, but on a higher and more complete level. By the hero’s action, the polarities that were in conflict at the beginning are finally resolved. 12. RETURN WITH THE ELIXIR. The hero returns home or continues the journey, bearing some element of the treasure that has the power to transform the world as the hero has been transformed.

Problem is that half of these are really contextually dependent. So when I see some random person's face from a movie I never seen, I don't get the same reaction as I ought to until I see Anton Chigur standing still and I'm like: Oh okay, this is the section where we're showing out-of-context close-ups of the villain characters; if the shots were a little more self-contained and self-explanatory it would serve the message better.

One of the most glass shattering moments of my life was the realisation how much a story has to adhere to this structure in order to be received successfully. The Hero's Journey can be broken down into 20+ steps, one of my favourite films is Interstellar and it ticks almost every one. Makes me feel a little played. Doesn't make me love a story any less, but something feels very deterministic and perhaps futile about it all.

Good Video, if you feel insecure because your other videos usually do better in terms of like/dislike ratio don't be, it is just different from your other content and people dont like change. The video is good, keep on doing what you enjoy and explore

Terrific work! This could be a great resource for teachers who are teaching the Hero's Journey - provides lots of classic and current examples for students to connect with.

I liked the previous montage better but that's probably because you can see the touch visually whereas with this you'd have to know the movie and understand why it's a hero's journey

So many good memories !! This is exactly the way I would like to share my passion for cinema. Even if the soundtrack is not the one I would have picked (no offense), I want to thank you for the great job you've done. Thanks for paying tribute to those great movies !!

Great video to visually show the screenwriting 3 act structure process come to life on screen. It's one thing to read it or even practice it in writing, but to see how other filmmakers have done it is extremely beneficial.

All films in some way or another have traces of the hero's journey archetype. Even David Lynch in some respects.
