Chris Sanders really hit the nail on the head when he talked about how bike infrastructure is mostly a box ticking exercise unless you live somewhere that really gets it. And most places in the world don’t get it yet.
@ProfessordevilL2 жыл бұрын
Jason from Not Just Bikes presented how the Dutch have solved it. The Dutch have put in place design guidelines for infrastructure. So in order to check the box you need to be in compliance with the guidelines.

I love Chris Sanders. I think that yes, cycling does create more connection, with your surroundings and with the other people on the road. If you do a regular ride each day for some reason, maybe a commute, you will sometimes see the same people each day and it is really nice to smile and perhaps great them. These are all very small things, but they are important. With the lockdowns we were all experiencing recently I think it helped some of us realise just how important these small encounters with other people are.

There's a reason why we're regarded as the most individualistic country in the world and why we're so divided as a result of it. We're doing everything that further distances us from our community as many ppl don't even know their neighbors unless something bad happens. Same goes for cars. You only truly acknowledge other drivers during negative circumstances. It's unhealthy that most interactions we have with one another is usually due confrontation and necessarily a means to friendly. Some other countries also have it been normal to share a table with strangers if there's space. While here we reserve (unofficially and officially) a whole table for certain ppl even if there will be plenty of empty of seats. It's crazy how all these small distancing behaviors adds up

That was a nice video. You guys covered a good amount of topics I can relate to as a NY resident and ebike user. Chris is an awesome guy and his ebike+NY experiences were interesting and fun to hear about. 30 min is a good ride conversation video length. I miss the "More cameras" counter. I'm glad this video had a casual/candid and non-cheesy thumbnail. Super impressive that Tara can hold a camera for so long. Still think the signs for no ebikes on the greenway are at least offensive and classist. Road bikers easily go as fast as I can on my ebike and even pass me, but they are free to zoom past other greenway users without any backlash. No reason why ebike users shouldn't be welcome on the greenway to do their recreation & commutes & taking kids to school and do their part in helping reduce car traffic and pollution.

Here in Brighton & Hove City in the UK the council has taken some lanes on a few roads from cars and turned them over for cycling. This has been absolutely excellent for cyclists and I am glad to hear this is being considered in NYC. Here we have had a lot of negativity from many car drivers who resent losing road space, however they have so much road space and the cost for all of us from the amount of private cars on the roads is so great.

Most of the east coast cities were designed in the era of the pedestrian and the horse. Rail adapted reasonably well and then we had the automobile. The bike, especially the ebike is ideal for transportation in most weather, but you identify a huge gap in the infrastructure. Securing these high dollar bikes really is super important.

Living in Idaho I relate to the "Idaho Roll". Every once in awhile I'll have out of state transplants snap at me for using a stop sign as a yield and a traffic light as a stop sign. Another reason I love commuting by bicycle is the waves and howdys I get from children. When I'm in a vehicle I won't even look their way, but when I'm pedaling it is not uncommon for them to say hi with a smile.

30:12 When Chris Sanders shared his age, I visibly gasped because goddamn he looks G-G-GREEATT *Tony the tiger voice* for his age and thought he was in his early to mid-30s! I need to step my weight training game up twice a week if I want that. Also, his being in the tech field, specifically as a Software Engineer, made my eyes gleam at the representation! Since I am preparing myself to transition into that role, I have felt a bit intimidated and scared due to some bad experiences in tech with narrow-minded people downplaying my skill, stealing my ideas and contributions as their own. But I know, I know the vid and channel are about biking, not tech, so that couldn't be helped, haha. If Chris reads this, I hope you know you being in Tech matters so much. I hope you continue with your success and enjoy your happiness! This ride and convo series was fun to watch, and I did not realize how long it was as it felt like it was no more than 15 minutes. Great work!

Man, I love , love, love this style of video! You are really making me miss NY. Now in Florida in a town with decent bike trails and multi-purpose wide sidewalks but no protected bike lanes on our roads though we do have “bike lanes”. Local law here allows riding on sidewalks but that is not always ideal. Hopefully things might change as there was discussion at a recent city council meeting about protecting pedestrians and bikers on our local streets. Honestly, though we have scenic trails I do miss the vibrancy of NYC. Keep the discussion going.

I love the Idaho Stop. I think that it should be applied to both stop signs and traffic lights, but honestly, it won’t often be useful for traffic lights where I live because if a traffic light exists, there’s often even traffic going through that intersection to justify is, so unless I were to bike in the middle of the night, there’s always traffic that has the green light.

And another nice ride through NYC, love them. I think he is stopping always, but adapted to the Dutch [royal Gazelle] bike: so only when necessary ;) Bike parking (public and private) is surely a thing, and there is some chicken-egg mechanism going on: not riding bikes because of no parking, or no parking because of too few bikes to accommodate (so same as infra as a whole) Taking car roads is gonna call for some discussion, but in the long run sure it will make sense (traffic-wise): almost every bike passing is one car less standing in traffic, so in the long run will increase the speed of all.

Chris’s Gazelle Medeo T10+ bike can be pedal assisted to 28MPH and so is illegal to ride anywhere in NYS. The limit for a pedal assist is 25MPH probably because you can only ride > 20MPH e-bike within NYC and NYC speed limit for vehicles is 25MPH (unless otherwise posted). So NYS ignored the Class 3 definition being pedal or throttle assist up to 28 MPH and went with 25MPH. My concern is not enforcement - there currently isn’t in NYC though that could change. My concern would be an insurance company denying a claim based on the bike being illegal.
